Looks really good. I've been looking at this for a while since i'm a big fan of Level-5 games.
Still waiting for Dark Cloud 3 though….
Squenix:
DUUUUUUUUUUR WE CAN'T DO TOWNS! IT WOULD TAKE 500 MILLION YEARS!!!!
Level 5:
Hey bro! Here's how you do it.
Never heard of it before. Great graphics.
For Playstation 3? WOOHOO!!!!
Wait, I thought this was being made for the DS.
I think it's coming out for both.
It is. This makes me wish for an HD port of Dragon Quest VIII so bad.

Level 5 continues to prove that they're friggin' awesome
I saw this the other day and I can't wait. Combine the beautiful atmospheres of Studio Ghibli and Professor Layton? Gunna. Be. Awesome.

They need to re-prove themselves after the shit-stain that was White Knight Chronicles.
Level 5 I always think of like Tri-Ace. They develop games with some awesome systems and potential, but there's always something that detracts from the final product.
Here's hoping they hit it out of the park on this title, because a fancy PS3 collab with Ghibli and Hisaishi isn't something that's likely to happen again.
Looks pretty fun. Haven't been this exited for a jrpg for a while.
I'm quite surprised that there wasn't a thread before this. The game simply looks amazing.
Actually, there was. But like many threads on this forum, the search function has put it on their ignore list. I sure can't find it, but I know there was one.
I'm currently having a back-and-forth with someone on twitter who says Ni no Kuni doesn't visually look all that great.
looks too much like a cartoon! almost like the graphics were done by some crappy anime studio!
needs more muscle. more grit. more gray. like gears of war. oh, the incredible gray. it just pops out of the screen.

No, actually. He's a big anime fan, that's what he's on about. He says 3D will never look as good as 2D animation, and that this game more or less insults him for even trying. He says the DS version is superior cause it actually has traditionally animated Ghibli cutscenes in it.
Wonder if he hated Wind Waker also.
Sorry, but this game also gives me similar vibes as to when I saw WW for the first time. Ni no Kuni takes that style a step further. Very excited for this game, and I'm leaning towards the PS3 version, though I might just end up with both.
Looks great. Let's hope the story doesn't suck beyond belief this time.
Level 5 has done an amazing job with the Layton games. I suspect this will be awesome.

Legend of Legaia.
It was Legend of Legaia.
….but it was also Legend of Legaia.

I don't think Legend of Legaia has anything to do with Tri-Ace (correct me if I'm wrong), but I'm glad you brought it up.
I love Legend of Legaia so much. It's an amazing game with a really interesting battle system. Sure, it had flaws, but I shall treasure it forever.
Could swear I remembered a tri-ace logo at the start.
Hardly recognised you there, Greg.

Contrail, I believe. They helped make Skies of Arcadia too, another fantastic RPG.
There it is! I consistently confuse them because of the Con'trai'l. Like some weird-ass trigger.
Level 5 just held a conference in the last few days, and details on the gameplay of the DS version have been revealed (not PS3 yet).
Combat apparently revolves around a Pokemon-like monster system (350 species). My enthusiasm for this game just dropped by half. Fuck Pokemon.
It all depends on the monsters they create.
The Pokemon battle system has been known for for awhile now, wasn't it? Similar to the Monster Team feature in Dragon Quest VIII.

It is a monster capturing game, the gameplay is a lot more simpler then pokemon and the metagame of it is nowhere near Pokemon(people probably don't know anything about Pokemon this days :P).
I played the DS game till the end, its a fun game, the monsters evolutions suck a little though, some of them if I remember well had two types of evolutions but basicly the evolutions almost doesn't change the monster, they get one more horn or something and change colour, etc I really like the monsters and their design but they could have made the evolutions better(maybe in this version they are), anyway for whoever likes Pokemon like games, this is a great game plus the story/scenarios/art/monsters are pretty fun to see, I really like the artwork, I'm also a Level-5 nuthugger so take that into consideration.

Wow… So, so, so pretty ✧_✧
Looks like a Miyazaki movie... and no wonder, I just checked some websites and it's made by Studio Ghibli !
Wow... speechless
Thanks~
I do really hope this comes state side, it certainly looks better than Dragon Quest X by far.
Didn't Level Five have a poll about which one of their games we wanted most in America?
How did Ni No Kuni do?
This looks good and I usually freaking hate cel shaded games(Tales and their stiff looking ugly graphics killed cel shaded RPGs for me forever)
omg i was just gonna dig this thread up and ask what's going on with this. are we getting a NA release?
so the DS version is a bit different than the PS3?
Extended gameplay trailer, anyone?

Well, the graphics on the PS3 are better obviously… but apparently the story goes on a lot longer, too.
this is arriving on my doorstep Wednesday morning

I'd love to hear some impression and how it would rank among all the other ps3 jrpgs (well preferably comparing to the ones that aren't overly sexualized).
Sure. First of all, while I doubt many people here (if anyone) has experienced the DS version, since it's not translated, the game appears almost identical in many ways. I had thought they would be different or more like "two halves of the same story" or something, but it's very very similar, same animated cutscenes and voiceover, etc. However, the PS3 version is definitely much better, and not only because of the graphics.
The battle system is quite different and I think much more improved. Original style was like Dragon Quest, where you have a party, give them commands, then everyone goes in order when the turn begins. Instead, the PS3 is a realtime system a little bit similar to FF12 or White Knight Chronicles, but with some major differences. You only control one character at a time, which can either be Oliver the main boy (very weak but can use magic) or one of your imajinn (basically, pokemon). You can switch out at any time by using L1 and each pokemon only has a certain amount of time it can be used before it needs to be recharged…but except for boss battles the fight will never last that long. If you tell them to "attack" they'll run up to the target and attack at a certain speed (there's a rating system) for about five seconds. If you see a monster charging up a powerful attack, you can cancel and quickly select defend on the fly. Every action has a cooldown time so you have to wait a little bit to recharge. However, the left stick will move your character around the battle area freely and the D-pad moves through menu items. if you call up the item or magic menu it will pause, but otherwise monsters will continue to attack you while you try to scroll around your options. It's a pretty fast-paced system so if you're not quick you can get killed very fast. The other major thing is that each pokemon has its own stats, but your HP and MP all correspond directly to Oliver, so you can't just have one pokemon fight until it dies and then select another. Since the pokemon can't actually use items, you need to switch out to Oliver if you need healing, but that means Oliver is also close to dying. If you're in over your head the game will let you know pretty easily. There are also HP/MP orbs that pop out of monsters that you can run around to pick up that will make things a bit easier.
As for everything outside of the battle system, it's very comparable to Ghibli movies outside of maybe Princess Mononoke. Very charming and colorful and family-friendly. The map data is pretty gorgeous, I think the character models aren't that great but the anime-style filters make them look stylized and the creature design is totally adorable. There's a ton of handcrafted charm and the total package is very inviting and enjoyable. I don't know what the plan for the English release is, but the (first print only?) Japanese version comes with the same hardcover book that the DS edition does, very slightly modified for the extra sidequests I've noticed. However, the book is also in the menu within the game and is viewable using the controller like a PDF. In fact, collecting the pages of the book (which exists inside the world of the story) is part of the game, so you'll only see the pages for what spells you can currently use, and so on. With the DS you had to use the book to cast spells by using the stylus to draw special runes basically as an anti-piracy measure, and answers questions at certain points in the game based on what was written in the book, but without the touchscreen and (presumably) the piracy issue, the book is more just a compendium for the PS3 edition.
All in all, it's great, very fun and colorful and adorable.

Thanks a lot, this makes me pretty excited. The combat system sounds deeper than I have initially assumed. Does the game have furigana? I'm interested because I haven't found a PS3 game yet that has it and interests me at the same time. If it has I might import it since it might be a fun to learn new stuff.
Also how much Voice acting does it have?
It does have furigana. Of course, it's coming out in English in just 2-3 months (and presumably much cheaper) but as a learning tool you might find it interesting.
Voice acting is about on par with most JRPGs that aren't FF13. There are animated cutscenes, in-engine story cutscenes and the occasional voiced dialogue outside of these, but everything else is just text. So when you combine all the dialogue text of the game up between random NPCs and shopkeepers and all of that, probably only 5-15% or so is voiced. I'm not sure if that's due to the amount of text, or the fact that all of the JP voice work is done by actual film actors rather than seiyuu, and therefore it cost more so they recorded less. But at any rate, it's about standard amount.
Releasing in the US this winter, early 2013 for Europe. Will include both an English dub and the Japanese vocal track. They're putting great effort in the English dub.
So the DS one has turn based combat and the PS3 one has current gen like combat? Guess I'll be picking up the DS version then~
Why pick up the inferior version?
I prefer Turn based to the current way JRPGs are handled.
Although looks like no choice. PS3 version is out in May. DS version is out in never here XD
Finally got the money to import this, arrived today. The book that comes with it is really sweet. Probably the best game extra that I've ever gotten my hands on, but well doesn't necesseraly mean anything since I'm not big on collector editions.
Game seems really fun and is quite nice for someone who is slaving away through the kanji. Just be sure to keep jisho.org near your controller ;).
I don't think I have to repeat how gorgeous it looks.
Well back to playing …
PS: oh for those who haven't seen the english teaser yet , pornstar! :D
