I'm about a quarter through currently, and I'm in the middle of your Drum discussion. I find it absolutely hilarious, mostly because I was at my cousin's house one day and I had recently bought the Drum Island arc on DVD, and we watched it. Now my cousin is obsessively in love with Chopper and before she didn't really care about the series, but now she has a lot more interest, mostly in Chopper. But she wants to check it out a little more now than she did previously.

Get my friends to watch One Piece! Will do! But, a certain friend of mine, who I think would really enjoy the series if she gave it a chance, refuses to watch it, saying that she's afraid of the commitment that comes with watching all of the episodes. Also, she claims she hates pirate stories. What do I say to her?

Well, start by asking her what she doesn't like about pirate stories. I bet most of the things she dislikes about them are either not present, small in number or greatly reduced in OP, because while it's a pirate story, it's gone out of a majority of pirate cliches.

When I first heard "Pirates", I thought it was stupid and archaic. When I first saw Luffy in the first episode I thought he looked crazy and weird. However, deep inside I knew I had to go on. I liked the eccentric style and the crazyness of the main character. Zoro's past, Zoro vs Mihawk and the Arlong Park Walk made me a fan of One Piece.

One Piece is hard to get into but when you do you do not regret it.

Truthfully, the first few episodes/chapters of One Piece are mediocre at best (minus the first chapter of the manga), so I agree. But the same holds true to most Shonen series. But I agree, there's something you sense about it that's different and it makes you want to continue. For me, I started caring more at the Kuro arc and it only got better from there.

re: sanji's character change, around water 7 sanji was having all these amazing moments of coolness and comedy and almost being the impromptu team leader during the sea train thing with franky and sogeking. a lot of fans were complaining - and the seiyuu even mentioned it a lot, too - that sanji had been taking all the 'cool' lines and moments away from zoro; they mentioned how the character was barely speaking or doing anything outside of battling at the end of arcs.

i think they mentioned it during a group interview with Oda and all the voice actors (oda favoring sanji over zoro and giving him all the cool lines). around that time the character polls were even showing sanji starting to bridge the gap and almost match or trump zoro for second most popular character in the series. i think oda may have reacted to this by making a stronger effort to show zoro as being the unequivocal BADASS of the straw hat crew in subsequent arcs after water 7.

that had always been zoro's role and sanji was sort of stealing his thunder, and zoro doesn't have much of a distinctive role without being the intimidating badass; even without being a badass, sanji still has lots of distinctive traits, memorable gags and such. my guess is oda was definitely trying to give all the cool MANLY BADASS moments that could've been filled by either character exclusively to zoro, after the way he'd been sort of favoring sanji and having him be both a comedian and a badass for so long.

This was the most BADASS, EPIC, AWESOME PODCAST EVER XD!!! My head is still swimming with all the awesome memories of going through the entire first part of One Piece. I am now even more totally psyched for the new chapter, just 3 more days!!! Which reminds me AWESOME name for this one guys 3 more days to the new chapter and going strong for 13 years ^^ Nice! I'll hopefully be hearing from you guys on Thursday ^~!

Once again, you guys have made my night. So thank you. As if I wasn't already excited for One Piece's return this week, I got to relive what made this series so good through your discussion and then I got to listen to your opinions on the future. I definitely look forward to what lies ahead.

To think that 13 years have gone by. When you recap the series as a whole, it doesn't seem to be that long.

Oda is the Charles Dickens of manga. Why, because he describes everything, every small detail and manages to make everything that has happened so far connect with all the kinds of powers and people we have seen.

One more thing, Color of Armaments should be called Armaki.

sorry dude, i don't. i know it was from an interview posted in this forum around 2 years ago, maybe? it was right around 2-3 character polls ago, because i remember reading it shortly before seeing the stats on the latest character poll, with sanji closing in on zoro.

it's one of those things i remember pretty distinctly, though. i was surprised that anyone would outwardly complain about something oda was doing, even in a joking, polite sort of way. i guess it was just the seiyuu speaking personally as one piece fans themselves, and it was mostly about them teasing zoro's seiyuu about how easy he has it now, anyway.

i could just be reading waaay into the line 'when sanji showed up, he stole all the cool lines from zoro,' which i remember being said almost verbatim, exactly that way.

Huh, okay. Yeah, I'm surprised too. I didn't think Oda would be persuaded by a character poll to change the series, but I guess so.

i don't think he does whatever the readers want mindlessly, but he probably takes fan reactions into account when creating the manga. if fans are losing interest in a popular character like zoro, he probably does tweak things a little to peak interest in the character again.

interacting with fans helps the author keep track of what aspects readers are noticing and enjoying - or disliking, or missing the point of - in your series. vegeta became a main character in dragonball BECAUSE of the hugely positive fan reaction to him as a villain.

It's one of the benefits of running a serialized story and an astute author can not only pick up on that reaction from the fans and take advantage of it, but utilize it to create further opportunities to improve his own grasp of where the story is going. (i.e. maybe he realizes that a certain character is underappreciated or missing development, so he changes tacks and then realizes that this new direction is better than what he had originally planned, etc.)

Yeah, you're right. It's sad that Sanji's character had to suffer because of it though, but I'm sure Oda has something in mind for him.

It was never explained how Kaya's parents died, was it? Kuro said back in his arc that their death (or at least the father's, or something) wasn't a part of his plan.

Unless I'm missing something here, I'm sure Kuro will be back and we'll get a flashback related to that whole thing.

i was under the impression that he did kill her mom, but wanted to spare the dad - there seemed to be a a general respect and concern for her father as he was the one who saved kuro's life. whether he killed him personally or the father died during an accident - like him taking poison kuro only meant for the mom - he expressed serious regret that her dad had to die.

I have Volume 3 (dunno which edition 'cause I don't actually have it with me right here) of Viz's version of One Piece and it says that the

But the Funimation subtitles (on my Season One First Voyage DVD) for the scene in question say that the dad's death in particular wasn't a part of the plan. That's why I was confused about who died.

Now why it happened… Unless more was revealed in one of those One Piece guide books or something, I don't think we've revealed more information about that. And since this is One Piece, I'm sure the accidental death/s will play a bigger part of the story… one day...

On a different note, I did not know about the mysterious thing at the end of Thriller Bark until it was mentioned on the podcast. (I didn't read scanlations or anything like that when I read the podcast. At the most I looked at the first two pages of the chapter in question when they were shown on s-manga and I skimmed over that chapter while skimming through the volume at the bookstore.) I went to look at an anime screenshot of that and now am delighted to know I have one more mysterious thing in One Piece I get to have trouble sleeping over (not really).
