      So who takes this seriously and who thinks its about publicity, and having a good time?

      If i lived near DC i would go just to hang out and probably be with the restore sanity side. But im here in AZ with no money and even if i did i think i'm working that day. I expect Colbert to have more followers there than Stewart, since Stewart is appealing to people who have shit to do, and they won't show up because they have shit to do, or just don't feel like spending their only day off in the sun.

        I think it's funny.

        Especially how Stewart especially made reference to people saying "Bush = Hitler" (i.e., hardcore liberals just as moronic as the hardcore conservatives) and how I could easily imagine said hardcore liberals going to Colbert's rally.

          It's all three really. The intent is for people to have a good time, but I think Stewart is quite serious about the need to have real conversations in politics again rather than just going off the deep end.

          @Malintex_Terek:

          how I could easily imagine said hardcore liberals going to Colbert's rally.

          Why wouldn't they?

            Because Stewart criticized them, and if there's anything hardcore blues and reds have in common, it's if they're criticized they'll pretend they didn't hear the criticism and go somewhere else.

              Stewart and Colbert have the exact same fanbase so they'd be going there either way. It's the exact same rally anyway, but they're just calling it two different things because of Stephen's character.

              Not to turn this into a discussion of politics, but I'm going to say that it's disingenous to say that the hardcore elements of both sides use Hitler imagery to decry their opponents. Sure, a lot of leftwing nutjobs called Bush Hitler, but that was never much more than a minority of people on the left. It's pretty common through the entire conservative movement these days to call Obama a Communist, a Fascist, or both. Not just the Tea Party people, but even some actual Congressmen have gotten into the act on that front.

                It's all three. And I'm there. I'm totally going.

                  Aw, man. I wish to God I could go. It will be so awesome.

                  And it's a much needed rally, I must say. I look forward to the sign boards people will be coming up with.

                    @Ubiq:

                    That's not necessarily true.

                    Stewart's fanbase has always been fairly diverse, with representation from all demographics. But Colbert's is very clearly skewed in favour of the young, not the young at heart. When character Colbert came along, Stewart receded into the background as far as youth audiences are concerned. Young people still watch Stewart, but they're like Big Band Jazz listeners when bebop came along - a minority.

                    …though in all seriousness, people HAVE become a lot more uncouth in public recently. It's appalling such behaviour is being tolerated, but it's true the sensationalist media is helping to paint the idea those kinds of actions are acceptable. Yet, it only seems so omnipresent because of the powerful presence of Democrats in Congress and the White House.

                    If the Democrats get slayed in the upcoming mid-terms, we'll get see if conservatives get the same treatment the liberals are suffering through now. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until the next conservative president/majority, and who knows if this mania will have died down by then?

                      I actually work in DC and live in NoVa, but I've had plans to go out of town that weekend for some time, unfortunately. It's going to be awesome, though. I know at least a half-dozen people that are already making plans.

                        I would go, but I'm an ocean away right now.

                        Personally, I think this rally can only do good for the nation, despite the media attention it will provoke (ratings). Stewart is a very intelligent debater and Colbert is a genius satirist so if they succeed to gather up the common American and not the nutjobs that tend to go to these rallies, it could be the first step toward getting real working Americans to stand up and fight for their rights.

                        I'm not talking French or Greek riots, I'm talking about the quiet people that don't participate in the screaming wars the far left and far right tend to engage in.

                          I honestly don't know. In many ways, Conservatives are the ones who stirred up a lot of this extremist, sensationalist vitriol (a la the Tea Party) and have such a powerful and effective PR engine that when they regain power it's likely to just transition into McCarthyism 2.0 yet again, like it did during the Bush Years.

                          People have extremely short memories.

                            This is just Jon and Stephen's response to Glenn Beck's Honor thing…I certainly don't intend to take either of them seriously...they are COMEDIANS after all.
