Then I guess it's lucky that I couldn't care less what you think?
Likewise, cause I'd hate to be basing my gaming decisions off a single review source.

lol reviews are just some random guys opinion this game is under rated by a lot of people so far if you liked no more heroes then you should def play this so far i am at 3-1 were you at buuhan?
I'm at 4-3, I'm about to start up my 3rd play of it (played 3 hours Tuesday night, didn't play Wednesday, played 3 hours last night) and, from the looks of it, I'll have it beaten tonight. Also, the advice I can give you for 4-1 is to not get discouraged. 4-1 is basically a shooting gallery mini-game and you'll probably die a few times, but just keep at it.
Bought this earlier today with some GameStop credit. Really fun and it plays great too. I can definitely see where Mikami has made his influence.

Do you lack basic reading comprehension or something. The review was positive. I'm buying it soon. Just not straight away because it's not flat out amazing.
And I'll stop basing my decisions off them as soon as they let me down. But since they and their teletext predecessors haven't in almost 20 years, I see no reason to.
Don't take it personally, Darkstorm. I'm just loving the game and got a little defensive. I perceived the comment as you were originally going to pick up the game ASAP but upon seeing that review you decided to wait, but now I realize you never said that and that review is in turn actually what's going to get you to pick it up.
No beat for me tonight, probably shouldn't have waited till a quarter till midnight to start for the night. However I am close, I'm 3 chapters from the end. I'm also happy to report I'm nearing 10 hours, instead of the 8 I was expecting. The last handful of chapters have been pretty nerve-rattling as I ran out of ammo at a really cruel spot, generally the game was good at having the merchant when you needed him, but not this time. I was beginning to think I was screwed, but after much persistence managed to just get by with the shotgun… which is pretty awful (thus why it had ammo).
So just a headsup for those behind me, be sure to stock up during Act 4-5 (the village area) on ammo.
Beat. Man, that game was gewwwd. It just so happen that the trophy for beating the game on the difficulty you played on (in my case, Demon Hunter) was my 1,000th trophy. It deserves the spot.
Also, holy shit, Garcia is voiced by Steven J. Blum. I can't believe I didn't notice that. It's as clear as day now that I know.

Whoa. Didn't know that, nor did I really notice.
But it's not too surprising… You could practically make a Six Degrees of Steven J. Blum game with voice actors, just like with Kevin Bacon and actors.
I'm most impressed because I loved the guy back in the early days, but have come to found him overused. But his performance here has won me over again.
I love the little nods this game makes to others in the horror genre. Like how the map screen between each level resembles the overworld of Ghosts n' Goblins (with two levels in Act 4 that play off the Japanese name of the game, "Demon Village") or how you collect hearts a la Castlevania to keep your resistance to darkness up ("I'm not even going to ask how that makes sense.").
The references are left and right in this game, tho I'm sad to say I didn't get a few of them. Such as the two you just mentioned, but I got most of the movie references.
Beaten.
Great game all around and thats thanks to Suda51's style combined with Shinji Mikami sensibilities, plus Yamaoka's soundtrack (Its like the three S's of a good game triforce).
If there is one flaw that I'd have to point out, its that the game is actually kinda short, like a really competent gamer could get through this in about 8-10 hours. Not really that bad a length for games, but there isn't a "New Game+" mode or anything extra to unlock like that after you've beaten the game. The only thing to really do afterward is replay a new game with a blank slate on a different difficulty, if you're inclined to get the respective achievements/trophies.
I know everyone's values are different, but with the length and replay value in mind I'm not 100% sure I could recommend buying the game at the full $60, but its certainly worth picking up if you've got a gift card, credit, or bonus money you haven't used yet.
I always said that the best thing for Suda51 is for somebody to keep him in check to make sure his attitude doesn't hold back the product from being playable
So I'm really wanting to play this
Yeah, I mentioned before that Mikami's influence is really easy to see once you actually play the game, and thats DEFINITELY to the game's benefit.
Here's hoping they both team up for another game in the future.
They probably will, this is their second collaboration together afterall. Suda has already kind of hinted at it. Shadows of the DAMNED during its planning stages was suppose to be an all out survival horror game. Suda has wanted to make a survival horror game for years and wants it to be with Mikami, but for whatever reason (be it the concept evolving into something different, or EA wanting something different, no one really knows) Shadows of the DAMNED blossomed into a comedic action-game set in hell. Suda states he still intends to make a survival horror game in the future.
I'm really glad SotD (or DMND as it's apparently suppose to be abbreviated) didn't turn out to be a survival horror tho, cause I don't do horror games and I had a blast with this.
The game has sold 24,000 copies. I was gonna come in here and proclaim "WHAT THE FUCK?!" but then it dawned on me. This is how much it sold in June alone… and the game came out June 21st. So it sold 24k in a week and a half as a niche title with zero advertising... that's... actually notall that bad giving the circumstances. But it's got to sell more! Buy it, make your friends buy it. Hell, have them buy 2! Hopefully Japan takes notice and buys it when it releases in September, but Suda51 games have always faired better outside Japan.
Shadows of the Damned is a game I recommend to people who buy all the current and hot bullshit coming out. Because they tire of those games (bulletstorm, Duke Nukem, Fear 3, etc) about a week after it releases. So they come in looking for something different whilst trading those games in. Case in point is that they are bored to shit of Black Ops and no other shooter really lives up to it. (I'm not a CoD fanboy, but I had the same feeling happen to me with Crysis 2. Awesome looking game with great design…. but it's FPS elements didnt' control like Black Ops does. CoD just plays BETTER). Despite the series repetition and brain dead fan base... there IS a reason why it's on top (great controls).
I'm rambling... anyway. I ask them this:
"What kind of games do you play?"
"Shooters"
"what's your favorite (I already know the answer)"
"Black Ops/ MW2"
"Bored of it"
"yeah... the new maps aint that fun"
"Of course.... well are you gonna get MW3 or Battlefield 3?"
"Hell yeah I already have them pre-ordered! (from me the week before. ;)"
"Well lemme ask you something.... did you like Resident Evil 4?"
"Yeah it was great.... 5 was ok"
"Well let me tell you about a game you might not know about"
Even if they don't buy it. Just the premise alone intrigues them. Once it flys on your radar, SOTD is hard to ignore. It's just sooo unique and once played you realize it's well designed too. It's able to GET AWAY with sophomoric dick jokes and the like and still entertain you. It's a charm that really works in juxtaposition with it's extremely dark setting. Doesn't hurt that many of the encounters and situations the game shoves Garcia into are really well designed too.
I definitely have my hangups with the state of the Japanese game industry, but with games like Shadows and Catherine... I believe there is still hope. It's a style and creativity that you don't see much around the western game market. And I still love it.
Thank you for doing your part, man! There's some perks to working GameStop. I'd highly consider working there if not for how horribly I hear it's run.

Well, the thing about this is that it's still good games from creators we already know are good. Shadows is from the company that makes No More Heroes, Killer 7, etc. Catherine is from Atlus which has a very good game history. Platinum Games makes excellent games, and they were making excellent games back while they were Clover Studios as well. I'm still personally looking forward to the next game from Team Ico.
Hopefully Platinum's next game, Anarchy Reigns, is good. I… haven't heard good things from the games E3 showing.
Can we go back to the whole lack of advertising thing?
Because I'm seriously wondering why the hell EA even bothered to pick up the game if they were never going to bother advertising it?
And please don't suggest that EA doesn't have the money, that's just silly.
No kidding. Alice didn't get any advertising really either, it just happened to get a bit of coverage on gaming sites.
I'm honestly surprised EA hasn't done a temporary markdown on this one yet (20$ off).
They did it with alice, fear 3, crysis 2, and a couple others to drum up summer sales (awesome deal). I honestly don't know why Shadows hasn't received the treatment.
If it was published by Ubisoft like the No More Heroes games were, it'd probably be $20 by now. Seriously, unless you're a huge fanboy of the game coming out and you wanna support it, never buy a Ubisoft published game at launch.

Could possibly be what's on the table after Killer is Dead?
Nice to see they haven't COMPLETELY thrown out the idea despite the game selling so poorly.

Every Grasshopper game sells poorly, but they're awesome… and they know that. I do often find myself wondering "Where do they keep getting their money from to keep making awesome shit?" but in the end I accept it doesn't matter. They could be selling drugs on a street corner for all I care, as long as they keep making games.
I'm pretty sure they also do licensed anime games at times if they need to generate more cash flow…..of course, I don't think they've done one in a while.
Well, I know Suda was worked worked on an Evangelion-themed rhythm game, haven't heard about anything else beyond that.
They also did Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked and Blood+: Last Kiss for the PS2, the latter of which never came to the US. Always wanted to grab SC:ST after finding out they did it, but haven't seen it in years, sure it's obtainable online tho.
