Any thought given to a separate place to inform and update the rest of us?

To.Much.To.Handle.For.This.Site.
Isn`t used to so much guys clicking at one thread.
But made me curious how this site survived when 3000 guys were around.
Well it could be possible with Facebook.. but it isn't like you guys died when you had no APforums.. if so.. you should see a doctor : (
I think we all expected this, I mean we get enough traffic for the weekly chapters, throw in that it's been a month and that "certain something" is happening this chapter, and of course the forum was going to crash. If the forum still allowed guests to view the spoiler forum lemme tell you, the forum would be down for a solid week.

Wow I hadn't noticed that. I always remembered seeing like 300 or so Guests come out on the really big occasions at AP.
I suggest that a poster need to have a certain required number of posts to enter the spoiler forum. Or, those who post less than x posts a week should lose the privilege to enter the spoiler forum that week. Mods and members that contribute to the forum in another way can be exception.
@Sea:
This is a communist argument. Those who contribute nothing to the community except for the 500 eternal error can receive as much as those who post regularly to help prevent this forum from turning into a dead forum.
Karl Marx FTW.
We've had over 3,000 users on the forum back in 2006 (not sure why), but I dare say this is around as many REGISTERED users we've ever had on at once. We have around 700 members on right now.
Raise your hand if you're one of the few who DON'T follow spoilers. raises hand

I don't read spoiler but I do agree it's a benefit.
I'm one of the people who believes if you read spoilers, you're not a true One Piece fan. I realize that's a controversal opinion, but just think about it. You're completely ruining the narrative and experience. I feel guilty for doing it myself for around 100 chapters. If people stopped sucking their thumbs and stopped following spoilers, they'd enjoy the series even more than they already do.

Wouldn`t that lead to many spam posts just to be able to see the spoilers.

That was because 2ch crushed (or lost the spoiler pics), and only AP-forums had back then some spoiler pics because someone(i think BF) uploaded them right before that happened.
So all 2ch lurkers came to this place to see those pics.
@Don:

So that mods can't be lazy as well.
in 2006 we were DDos'd or whatever
I don't do spoilers either but I don't believe you're not a true One Piece fan if you look at spoilers. Some people just can't wait. Impatience, interest, curiosity, wanting to be "in" on the discussion, whatever the reason I just don't believe it's worth spoiling the story in any way. As long as people keep spoilers to themselves I don't care.
I actually have just a tad bit more patience then your average three old, so unlike 90% of the people on this forum I'm going to wait for the real chapter.
None the less, I'm going to have to be extra careful in reading any OP related thread in this forum save for the occasional idiot posting a spoiler and ruining the chapter for me.
Raise your hand if you're one of the few who DON'T follow spoilers. raises hand
looks around…raises hand

I agree with this completely. I ruined part of my experience by knowing that Robin and Franky joined the crew far before I was even caught up to that part of the series, and it ruined the feel of meeting a new character. I'd see Franky's introduction and I'd be like, "oh, I know what he's going to become a part of =O".
I usually read spoilers if they're posted on npc, but I'm abstaining this once just because it's a bit of a landmark chapter.
Also, we do have the main website we could post updates to, should the forum crash … I think
I read spoilers for a little bit but I agree, the chapters are much better without them.
If people stopped sucking their thumbs and stopped following spoilers, they'd enjoy the series even more than they already do.
No they wouldn't.
Spoilers provide a taste of what to come, tingling our taste buds and making us drool for the chapter. Much like the aroma of your favorite food makes you drool over the upcoming meal. Does it ruin the meal for you? No. Does it make it less enjoyable? Absolutely not. It makes you crave it all that much more, it builds your lust for it and when it finally arrives there's a sense of enjoyment beyond belief.
True One Piece fans read spoilers in my opinion.
Reading spoiler or not doesn't indicate how much you love One Piece. On one hand we have Greg, on the other hand we have Aohige, Battle Franky.
And, I don't read spoiler because there are only 20 pages a week and it would be too nerdy for me to wait to read every little bit of it in a spoiler thread. I however I respect what others choose to enjoy the series. I am not a true One Piece fan, I am a manga fan.
Also, we do have the main website we could post updates to, should the forum crash … I think
Fantastic. I'd just like to know if the site crashes, how long the downtime will be before its fixed.
And if reading spoilers makes me a real man's man or not.
I'm definitely gonna have to avoid the forums till the whole "something something" is over, cause I know people are going to be using the Strawhats after said "something something" in their avatars and signatures. I could just turn them off, but I know from experience if they're there then jackasses will post them elsewhere where they don't belong.
Damn you internets, and your spoilers! You have ruined so much for me!
Fantastic. I'd just like to know if the site crashes, how long the downtime will be before its fixed.
you can always get that info via IRC
Also, we do have the main website we could post updates to, should the forum crash … I think
The main site wasnt updated since 2009. I know it will soon come back with a new look and more content, but maybe on the main site it could always be updated when a new episode or chapter comes out, with links to pics and translation, which aren
t just links to the forum-thread.
I'm one of the people who believes if you read spoilers, you're not a true One Piece fan.
That's a terrible opinion.
And yeah, something should really be done to prevent those forum crashes. It's not the first time it happened.

You are thus asking for more spam posters, I think it would make it more fun. Wouldnt it.
I have no clue what you're talking about.
Everyday you can either ask Jonas, roboblue or Cinder on apforums irc channel. One of them is mostly there. If not then they're actively increasing their idle chakra.
If it wasn't for the crashes, the spoiler ch.598 thread would have beaten very easily chapter 575 previous record.
We really need bigger servers AP
What some sites do is have a seperate thread for posting the spoiler pics and translations and a seperate thread for discussion of spoliers.
It might help

No
We would have needed a separate webspace.
What, like OneManga used to do it? Or maybe they still do it, I haven't tormented there recently.
Still sounds like the same damn thing would have happened.
And it was bound to happen due to the enormousness of this occasion. In fact, I was counting on it so I could heckle the executable file, brennen.

Eh, I'm not feeling where you're coming from. When I knew Robin and Franky were part of the crew far before I was even at those arcs, I didn't really crave for more story. Knowing that they joined the crew DID make it less enjoyable in the sense that I didn't get the amount of shock you usually would if you read the series normally.
"Dang, Robin's quite the villain… WHAT! She joined the crew??"
Where as my experience was:
"Oh, there's Robin. She's a villain for now? Eh, she must turn good at some point and then join the crew..."
But hey, different tastes for different people.
Do you think that mangastream is going to crash once they release the chapter?
Yes, and then I will have no one to heckle though Brunt Grunt will heckle me.
@Robo:
Do you think that mangastream is going to crash once they release the chapter?
They're releasing it at a time where most of the world is asleep or in school/at work, so I doubt it.

Never doubt the determination of a thousand weeaboos!
I ain't a weeaboo, I'm just a Brit and it's 7:30pm over here.
The chapter will be released late at night PST. That's the middle of the night in the east coast and morning in Europe.
I guess the east coast Americans might be able to crash it if the weeaboos there stay up…
Is there a way we can donate to help get bigger servers? Otherwise I pretty much agree with Sea's plan on having to have posted.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure you can just ask an admin if they're taking money for a server. However, I don't know that they've expressed any interest in buying a new one. The current one doesn't crash that often.
Admins, if you are taking money for a new server, I could give $100 US. Not much, but it's better than nothing.

Honestly, this entire site is one giant spoiler. If you are not caught up to the current chapter (in any manga/anime) and you do not want to know about what happened during chapters years remote, fan forums should be avoided entirely.
The APforum spoiler section in particular is for those of us that are waiting for our weekly (well monthly on occasion) fix of One Piece. When only a few lines of spoiler text or a bleary cam shot or two is posted, the free minded theory crafting that takes place at that hour of the morning is its own entertainment.
There are few notable posters whose depth of knowledge and acute attention to detail combine to offer considerable insight into the inner workings of Oda's Materpiece. Many of these musing are only seen in those early morning hours of heretical conjecture where there's no overarching thread subject to restrict their thoughts
One can be a true fan of One Piece independent of whether one partakes in the seeming endless font of spoilerism.
Maybe APForums could have a twitter account just in case stuff like this happens?
I don't know. I just waited it out last night….til' seven in the morning...yeah..
I wasn't playing Dead Rising 2 or anything.

Yeah I agree - Twitter is probably the best way to keep us up to date with a site, I know the OPP (One Piece Podcast - for anyone that for some odd reason didn't know who I'm referring to) Is constantly updating with twitter and it works great. A twitter update or two would have been very useful during the character tournament for example, not just crashes etc.

No story worth a shit is ruined by spoiling it. But stands on the strength of it's material.
Shut the fuck up Buuhan.
In fact I'd argue that if you're attraction to One Piece is so shallow as to be based around shocks and jolts rather then enjoyment of it's elements that you are far far below others on the fandom ladder.
And I wonder how the hell you ever reread the series. Or anything at all for that matter.
Here's a spoiler, Luffy succeeds in the end.
OHHHHH RUINED, ITS RUINED FOR ME, WHO CARES ANYMORE BAWWWW
Meh…
It might not be ruined, per say, but I certainly get a lot more enjoyment at reading the surprises of the manga as laid out by Oda in the chapter instead of reading them in a small summary
Now, while it's true I'm a spoiler hound, I think Sea's idea would work for everybody. So, even if people don't read spoilers, if they were just casually here the night when the spoiler thread crashes the site, kind of not fair for them and by limiting it, it lessens the chance of a crash, too.
Last thing ANY Forum moderator wants is forced posting. What will end up happening is a sharp rise in no content "16 characters of" posts in random locations, just to make that week's spoilers. Worse, that sort of elitist restriction would just encourage more ill thought-out posts that start flame threads, as if the mods here do not have enough to do. Not sure if you noticed the burn out rate for active mods on this site.
I've seen various 'me first' sorts of ideas on how to restrict viewing spoilers. My favorite was the older account owner than said sarcastically, no one a day past when they joined should be able to view the subforum. I mean how would you like it if the arbitrary cut off for account age was nov 2009.. or better yet, nov 2008
What kills the server, by the way, are people constantly refreshing the spoiler page to see if any new information was added in the last 5 or so seconds. Doesn't matter if one is a regular forum poster or a lurker whose last post was in 2006, it is the height of disrespect to Arlong Park, and all the people that make this site happen, for anyone to 'hammer F5" for mere personal satisfaction.
Honestly, if Vbulletin's script cannot easily restrict how often accounts can ask for updated page info there's not much that can be done to force people to remain honest.
Since the forum behaves pretty well about not leaking spoiler info early though, is it too much to simply ask people not to refresh pages more than one every few minutes in the stickied rules? It is not even mentioned in the thread last updated 9/3/08
One solution to forum crashes would of course be to remove the "Privilege" of having a spoiler section at all here anymore. Needless to say, that's no real choice at all for One Piece fans.
Just wanted to post to say this…
Each and every time I see this threads title in suggestion I always feel like somebody is asking for the forum to crash as in "Suggesting that the forum should crash".... so confusing sometimes.....
500 Internal Server Error
500 Internal Server Error
500 Internal Server Error
STOP REFRESHING!!!
and the errors are coming again
