Father of the most wanted man in the whole world, grandfather of the newcoming pirate king. And also a great man himself. He could've decided to chase some other dream, but no, he wanted to protect the innocent. To give the young a safer childhood, to let the citizen live their lives in peace.
If he wouldn't have become a marine, he would've raised both Luffy and Ace by himself. From that the world could be different than what it is now.And Hiruluk is as epic as Garp is. His list of accomplishments may not be as long, but sure did he do things as astounding as his competitor. No way to say that one is better than another.
