Kitsune Fails at Drawing

So, I've decided I want to TRY and draw a comic book, as a few of you already know. I've been doing some research and doodles lately, trying to come up with a design for my characters for Spaghetti Western. I'm trying to pull pointers from other manga while developing my own style. So I've been drawing some doodles and during a session of OP doodles, I happened to draw Eddie, SW's main character, in the same pose as a panel of Luffy in Volume 2, just to get a feel for proportion and whatnot. So, here I now present a really shitty campic, just for you, Arlong Park.

Please note this is only my second day of serious drawing, so I'm looking for criticism and pointers, guys.

I'll start by noting that I fucked up the ear. :getlost:

Yeah, the ear is pretty messed up :P What I would advice you is to relax your grip on the pencil and make more fluid lines for one. =)

What the fuck? I can't even write while lying down. I'm Osaka (Azumanga Daioh) incarnate when it comes to that! I pass out before I do anything.

That doesn't really matter though, since I can sleep anywhere. ANYWHERE!

In any case, I should at least share a few more of my doodles. (and my nose)

I spent a good while doodling different facial features of Eddie's last night. I took a picture of some of the more decent ones. I like how the one on the bottom right ended up turning out without referencing anything. Has a "Luffy's pissed" feel, though somewhat unintentionally.

Same issues here in that I probably should be sitting up when I draw. But anyhow, this was probably the first serious doodle session I've had.

Hey man, all I can say is this: keep drawing.
Eventually, you're going to find out that trying to adopt a certain style means shit.
Look at me, I'm still learning, but I've improved vastly once I decided to stop being serious and just go with what feels natural. It'll be the same for you.
Also, needs more cactus.
BTW, I'm almost always listening to the radio or music when I draw, and that's supposed to be a bad idea.
I'm still getting used to it.

I don't have Kakutai's 'image' in my head yet. He's gotta be like Pandaman-level in terms of epic.

With that said, I still can't decide on Eddie's final image. The only thing I'm set on is the cowboy hat, the handkerchief, the ponytail, and the facial details for the most part. Oh, and his hair's gotta be brown.

I lay down a lot when I'm drawing too. It's not a bad thing (except for maybe some back troubles)
If anything it helps you learn depth perception better :V

I normally draw while sitting crosslegged and having my binder and paper on my lap. Usually, on whatever surace I'm drawing on, I have my face practically pressed onto the picture.

I can't do that. It makes my feet fall asleep.
Which normally isn't so bad, but whenever I'm drawing, someone (or something) always ends up making me get up and I almost fall on my face XD

Oh look, it's my art (LOL) thread.

Made some doodles tonight in Stats that are stimulating my creative processes. Then I came online, only to be doubly inspired by a certain amazing artist. (You know who you are~!) My juices got pumping, so I figured I'd take up the pencil again.

I'll start with the original doodles, which are characters in a project I hope to get started on in the future:

I guess I should explain some things. The only one I really spent considerable time on is the fox guy (he's not a cat, trapped! It was an anatomy fail on my part) in the center. The fox girl on the left was drawn half-heartedly. I only put her in to contrast the differences between the two different branches of the race. (Something I'll go into as my art gets better and the ideas come together.) The mouse guy was also last minute, as these are the only two races I've got a full set idea on, which again, I will go into later.

And yes, they are indeed what you think they are, technically. They are characters of different races, yes, but at their heart, they are indeed those. And for the most part, at least in these early stages, those are going to be a large chunk of what I draw. So, uh, fair warning.

Clearing that up, now to get to serious business. It's time to ramp up my art! So I'm gonna basically draw something every day, give or take, as I go from art disaster to… well, not awful. I'm open to all advice and criticisms so hit me with your best shot! Anything to help me improve will be absolutely welcome.

Day 1: Put Your Hands Where I Can See Them!

If I have to pick one thing I am awful at drawing, it's hands.

So that's where I'll start. I don't seem to have issue with structuring them however… It's just... making them not look awful is the problem.

I swear I have horrid lighting in my house and this webcam is awful. First order of business is buying a friggin' tablet.

Hands can be a bit tricky. How do you draw them?

I look at my own, snap a photo if necessary and use them as a reference if it'd be awkward to hold them in whatever position I want for a while.

A couple of them (the two on the top right were me drawing myself looking at my hand). The closed fist I had to use a reference pic to get sort of right. The other more detailed ones (and the second of the top right ones) I drew using a simple skeleton, which I do when I'm not being lazy (I just draw a circle for the center of the hand, then draw lines to shape the fingers, then I draw around them. It seems to at least give me a half decent shape.)

When I draw hands, I do lots of weird angles. I also always try to remember that a person's hand can go from their chin to their brow…
I'm not good enough to give criticism/advice, but I thought I'd say something.

Okay, so I tried applying my hands issues while addressing something else, how awful I am with clothing. Of course, this was rather easy.

It seems significantly better than the last one, but I think I'm trying to do too much too fast. Joy. >_> Tomorrow, I'll probably do something a lot simpler. Like shading a ball or some shit.

Anyway bumping this with a quick sketch I made today.

This was my first stab (get it?) at the main character. He still doesn't have a name in place. :\ As for the picture itself, I know the legs are weird, I screwed the perspective there but the left leg is supposed to be closer in the foreground. Also, the shoes and hands are weird, and are areas I plan to improve on over time. Also, I forgot a rather important detail for the MC's outfit: his sword sheath and pockets, particularly for his other weapons. :I

Overall, I feel like I'm getting slightly better. I'll need to work on it some more over time. :)

This is Valydia, the deuteroganist. She looks quite different than she did back when I did a quick drawing. Valydia's the daughter of a class-obsessed Noble Vixeian. She's not too fond of her high-class lifestyle, however, and dreams of adventure and exploring old ruins. So to match, while on the road, she wears very loose and light clothing. One thing that my current ability doesn't do justice is Val's face. There's a distinct face in my head for her, so it's something to look forward to as my ability improves.

This is a second attempt at Val. Her design's not finalized of course, so I'm experimenting with different designs with her. I'm particularly fond of this outfit, but I've already got the open shirt thing going with the other two. :\

Also I tried shading the image to look like sunset, so excuse the bleh shading.
