Star Driver PV out

Just thought I'd post this since I didn't see a topic, but I'm not really sure if you do this kind of thing on AP being new and all… >_>. Feel free to close it if it's not allowed or whatever...

Looks alright to be be honest. Animation is fabulous, as we expect of Bones. I can see it ending up like Xam'd though and have everything but the animation end up a let down. Looks very 'Camp' to say the least, with the female mecha called Ginga Bishounen or something and the MCs little Magical Girl transformation. He has an awesome seiyuu though… xD.

So after the high praise from MasakoX and JesuOtaku about this show, I decided to check this show out and I finally caught up on all the episodes. All in all, a pretty darn good series. However, I'm still not convinced it's one of the best series of the year (well, not tha I really have anything to compare it to).

First off, let me just say that the animation and accompanying fight choreography are fantastic. The mech battles at the end of each episode are definitely the highlight of the show for me.

The story, however….well, that's a bit tricky for me. I think they've got a really good idea here and I think it works for the most part, but...I'm not sure. I don't know if it's the fansub translation or the fact that I am reading fansubs or maybe just mediocre writing that I don't always feel emotionally invested in the characters. Yeah, they're there and I understand their motivations, but I don't really know anything about them or why they're doing what they're doing.

Well, at least that was true in the earlier episodes. The last few episodes have done wonders for the main three and I feel a lot more invested in them (the fight between Takuto and Sugata was absolutely stunning). So yeah, I guess it's more an issue that the show gets off to a slow start, but picks up a bit over time.

Now, I know I've been harsh on the show storwise, so let me restate that I do in fact like this series. Perhaps I'll like even more once it gets dubbed and upon repeated viewings. And hey, we're only 10 episodes in, so it's still got some time to impress me even further.

you can probably be relatively certain the plot will be revealed bit by bit by bit

if it's revealed at all.

I'm following along fine, I think. Whenever a concept is introduced I don't get, I chalk it up to them not wanting to explain it until later.

I love the characters and the dynamics between them - obviously the animation is stellar. And come on, it's FUN! And unnecessarily flamboyant. Most ~fabulous~ show since Code Geass.

I eagerly await it every week.

…no it's not.

Utena's director is Ikuhara Kunihiko, while Star Driver's is Igarashi Takuya.

Igarashi did do work on a few episodes of Utena, but not to such a large extent.**

! The Truth about the West Maiden and her sister blew my mind. No other show has done that to me.
I want Fish Girl to come back and sing Monochrome some more. I love that song.

Supposedly that's Sugata's Cybody clutching that evil demon Cybody. Holy Crap that thing is huge.

These two lover girls need to butt out of this story. They're starting to feel like Jesse and James trying to catch Pikachu.

Our Sailors Uranus and Neptune expies need some backstory badly, since they just sort of appeared out of nowhere and feel rather one-dimensional because of it. And this is after most of the other Crux Star Drivers with the exception of the original Vanishing Age trio got some, so they feel even more at odds with everyone else.

Show's fun, though it does annoy me that every time the playing field is leveled, Takuto either gets an ''I win'' button (despite the events of episode 6, it looks like Sugata doesn't have any faith in him) or pulls out some brand new super-duper special move that never gets used again to one-shot the enemy. I understand that he can't afford to lose because if he does, the bad guys instantly win, but it really wouldn't hurt to have a fight that's close from start to finish.

I was taking the beginning of the show as a great Tauburn expo of all his abilities and once a good deal were shown he would start have better, more even fights. Episode 16-18 were my favorite fighting wise although Takuto's, like you said, "I win button" is getting old. They're making a big deal out of this cybody repair dealio so for some reason I'm expecting Tauburn to get jacked up and either 1) Repair itself because Takuto is broken or 2) Somehow get fixed by the Glittering Crux's Science Division, since they all feel betrayed and whatnot.

Yeah that's my only knock on the show. Other than that it's been pretty enjoyable.
