It's my first thread here and no doubt it's going to get locked right away.
This might sound ridiculous, but I got this idea in the third round discussion thread of the tournament after Robby made a joking little comment about how he's not cool anymore since he became a mod. It kind of made me realize I really don't know that much about people here.

I think it would be really cool to have a subforum that deals with the history of Arlong Park Forums and bios of the mods and other notable users from exellent posters all the way to people like AGOG and Gaara (who bring/brought something to these forums in their own way). This would also help me keep track of who people are. Like Jerk Disease was formerly known as Zephos. He seems like a real asshole to people who aren't familiar with him, but in truth I discovered he's a great guy. If we had bios it would help rookies get a feel of what people are like and they'd be forewarned about who to avoid and such. It's not vital to know, but I also think it'd be interesting to know what user names people have gone by (to me anyway).

It could be like a history textbook only people would actually want to read it of their own volition. Being a nerd, I'd actually be interested in reading all that kind of stuff. How the forums came into being, the first people to join, how it's changed, inside jokes and how they got started, and great events that have happened from year to year. I know we have a legendary archives thread, but it doesn't go into every detail as much as I'd like you know? or have a whole lot there, actually.

Kitsune Inferno came up with the name AP Forums Wiki, so credit to him on the off chance that this wasn't an incredibly stupid idea.

It might not necessarily be every single user on this site though. I would hope it'd be a more light hearted thing and my hope is that the bios would stay fun and informative at the same time without blatant flaming. just like a frank, objective analysis that has a sense of humor.

I'm just remembering when I didn't know who Greg was, and was basically, like, 'who is this idiot and why does he act like he knows so much.' lol.

I know that people sometimes get nostalgic. It was by complete chance that I figured out Jerk Disease was Zephos. Until Sea actually said it in a post I remember being so confused who this "Zephos" was. The problem with that is that it's so scattered and disorganized. it's unpredictable where a tidbit of info about someone gets dropped. If there was a subforum specifically for that purpose, it'd be faster than trying to wander around aimlessly in other threads on the off chance that it gets mentioned. and that criticism thread only covers some people not everyone.

Question: Would everyone write their own entries (no doubt that would lead to extreme bias) or one sole user would do it, or a team of neutral users?

It would be interesting to hear of this forum's history….I know it contains a colorful chain of events. :P

That bias is always an issue. One possible solution for that is that if you want to make changes or add a new user name to the bios, you need approval from a mod. There could also be something like reviews for books: people will be able to see who said what about someone.

Why read the cliff notes when you can just have the actual adventure and discovery yourself? The best way to meet people and get to know them is to interact with them, read what they say and actually talk. What better way to discover someone is an ass or an idiot or actually knowledgeable or funny or your future BFF, than to interact with them? You gotta go out and actually have a few beers with a person to get to know them.

And there are also archives.

Also, while not all encompassing due to how rarely its given out, (only 2 or 3 every couple months) senior status is generally a quick indicator of a competent and intelligent poster thats been around for a while. Not all good posters have a star, and not all posters with stars are good, but it is a quick hint for those that do.

Really, a cliffnotes wiki doesn't help me if there's a fangirl who read my page and fell madly in love with me if I don't even know she exists.

But its an interesting idea all the same.

Ah well, I tried. Thank you everyone for not shooting me down and all. I figured it'd be a dumb idea, but the reception was a lot more positive than I was expecting.

I know what you mean Robby, the best way to learn is to go out there and participate. The 2010 Tournament was a really great way for me to get to know some awesome people. I feel like it gave me a bit of courage to go exploring somewhat. Though I hardly know what I'll do next, once the matches are over. I don't want it to end to be honest.

Perhaps my greatest wish is to have more fun events like the tournament that brings people together to have fun. It really makes me happy to do those kinds of things since it's the easiest way to form a company of interesting people. These days I seem to thrive more on conversation than my old self of even a few months ago. I haven't had the misfortune of running into a total asshole or anything, but I will say wholeheartedly that the people here are very wonderful.

I still think a history of Arlong Park Forums would be neat, however. Call me lame, but nothing would fascinate me more than knowing all about the people who came up with the idea of creating this great place.

Narutofan sub-forums have made their own wikis.
If you really want to do it, you don't need mod approval. Make one yourself and ask for participation.

I remember Gaming World used to have a Wiki.

They pretty much restricted editting to a certain group, and you could apply to be an editor, but had to pass a competency test where you had to write up a page about something. Once you passed that, then you could actually be added to the editor group.

The Wiki tracked not only members, but also tournament results and the like.

^That sounds like an interesting method. Tracking would be a useful tool if someone knows how to do that. It would probably be easier to make a new thread and edit posts to update when I get new info. or maybe I could make a wikia page right? I think it's free to set one up. It would be ideal to have it formatted like the One Piece wikia page, but if I go that route, I'd probably need to count on others to help me make it look all neat and high quality.

Don't worry, I suck at technology too, which makes it all the more ironic. I think I'm going to make a new thread after I get a handle on how the site works and how to edit things.

One important thing we need to figure out is the images, since they need to be uploaded from a computer apparently. No self respecting site doesn't have great images. but that can be added later I suppose.

You should probably start a TV Tropes page instead. Someone on another forum I regular pointed out communities are getting their own TVT pages and those sort of do a better job of summarizing things without needing historical context, since so much background is lost these days. I don't even remember my own posting history and if I don't browse AP for a week I tend to forget people and discussions very easily.

The problem with a wiki is no-one from the old days is around to verify the accuracy of the information or provide first-hand testimony. It'll all be from memory, and while that might be good enough for some people, it can't be trusted. I mean, when SaiGar 2008 was running I had an article on Lurk that was supposed to be updated weekly (like a blog) with stuff about it, but the tournament's fail just overloaded me and I lost the motivation. Now it's just a bunch of pictures and what I write now might as well be fiction, even if I remember things proper the information isn't a first-hand account written at the time.

But with the tropes you can at least affix tropes to a person's current personality and history, and update that.

1.) Someone who is motivated enough to maintain an entire wiki (I'm not speaking about the articles);
2.) Someone who knows everything about everyone here and is familiar with the entire history of Arlong Park Forums.
