20 Million Copies in 2010

Oricon reported that One Piece manga has sold over 20 million copies in 2010 alone.

The Oricon Communications market survey firm reports that Eiichiro Oda's entire One Piece pirate manga series has sold over 20 million copies — just in 2010. As of the August 16-22 week, the manga series has sold 20.328 million copies. This is the first time that any series in any book category has sold that many copies in one year since Oricon began posting its Japanese book ranking charts in 2008. The second highest selling manga series is Naruto, which has sold over 15 million copies.

The last three volumes of One Piece, #57 through #59, have each sold over 2 million copies. In particular, volumes 57 (1.691 million copies) and 59 (1.853 million copies) each have held the record for the most books sold in the first week.

Amazing!! In 2009, One Piece sold nearly 15 million copies, and this year in 8 months over 20 million copies… probably in all 2010 reach 30 million copies O_O

I think Oricon is Japanese only.
15 million suprised me too. It's is a lot. I thought the differnce would be much bigger like: One Piece 20 million and Naruto like 10 million

With the sales around the world Naruto could very well be equal to One Piece(I mean total world sales)

I doubt it, the Japanese manga market is way way bigger than any other.
Naruto would need years of Dragonball-ish popularity worldwide to accomplish that.

BTW, I never understand why so many people are caught up in OP not being as popular as Naruto or Bleach in the US. If the networks invest advertising / time / money into promoting OP like they do the others, it'll do just fine in the US or anywhere else. Until then, just enjoy the ride

There are global data to know which manga has sold more worldwide? I 've always find it strange that devolpers make lots of naruto-based video games on every console, but there are relatively few of onepiece

World Wide Naruto and Bleach probably sell more, due to the USA kid and teens wtv mostly ignoring One Piece because it was basicly murdered there in the 4 kids version of the anime or something like that, seems like its growing now with Funianimation and Viz bringing it back but im not sure since i dont live there.

i heard that US market is not that big but i don't know the exact number and Europe market is much bigger especially France- 2nd biggest manga market after Japan.

Japan is by far the biggest manga market in the world. One Piece is th ebest selling manga in the world, with or without anywhere other than japan. Think of it this way: Naruto sold 15 million less than OP so far this year, and OP sold 20 mill in Japan. THat means Naruto sold 5 million. So it's out of japan sales would need to be triple that of it's in Japan sales to catch up with OP's Japan sales alone. And despite doing horribly in the US, it still sells there and I believe it also sells pretty well in most of Europe as well, beating Naruto in some places there. OP has also been running for far longer than Naruto, and seems like it will keep running long after it as well

Conclusion: Naruto won't even get close to OP in sales. EVER.
