Satoshi Kon, the director of Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and Paranoia Agent has just passed away at the age of 47. I've only seen Perfect Blue which was fantastic, been planning on watching Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers for awhile but haven't got to yet. But just from Perfect Blue I can tell how good he was at what he does, I'm sad to hear he's gone. PB was one of my first anime films. Gotta see his other films ASAP.

really really really sad news, i'm more shaken by this than i thought i would be. I saw paprika in theaters in new york city and it was amazing…..for anyone that isnt familiar with his work I highly recommend going out and watching some. This is a real loss for the anime industry

I wasn't a 100% fan of everything he did, but I did really like most of it and he was incredibly talented and one of the few anime directors these days with actual name recognition power. We've definitely lost a major, major talent in animation.

I didn't like Paprika that much, but all of his other works were superb, especially my beloved Paranoia Agent.

How terrible. He was my favorite anime director. I was expecting to enjoy his creations for years to come. I know he had so much more in him. It's like JK Rowling dying after writing book 4….

Perfect Blue felt a bit like an animated Hitchcock movie, just a great psycho thriller.
And Tokyo Godfathers was so heartwarming, I remember in the winter time I used to watch again and again...Yeah his movies could really get the audience.
The man had talent..he leaves way too soon and will be missed...

Cut Magazine has an interview with Hayao Miyazaki where the venerable animator confesses that if their upcoming Arietty the Borrower doesn’t do well in the box office, plans are already in place to shut down Studio Ghibli.
Suzuki-san is making a dissolution program for Ghibli. No joke, we talked about it the other day. For example, Ghibli should be able to continue with about five staff members as a copyright management company even if we smash the studio. So, Ghibli can say ‘We stop film production. Goodbye’. I do not have to be there.
This is really sad news. I've watched Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, and Paprika and Kon is really one of those people in the industry that make me take anime seriously as an art form. He was never afraid of using ideas and situations that make people uncomfortable to tell a story, which was nice considering most animes are dominated by escapism and idealization.

This is a really good point and one of the things that made him such a valuable director. Contrary to what some people in this thread might wish, it's also the reason he would never ever have surpassed Miyazaki in terms of box office results, but in terms of the artistic influence he wielded and the likelihood in developing new ways we watch and appreciate anime (in the 21st century) he represented much more intangible value than another string of family-friendly Ghibli rehashes.
I didn't like Paranoia Agent, but Tokyo Godfather and Paprika were great. That's a great loss for the anime industry.

I only knew one of his films, but this is fucking powerful. He lived for 3 months knowing he was going to pass soon, not being able to continue what he loves, and keeping it secret. I can't begin to imagine how painful that was. He's at peace now.

Sad day indeed. I love Millienium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers with a passion that doesn't fade no matter how many times I watch em. I too was expecting to see him leading the future of animated movies, and he will be greatly missed.
