My idea for a Strong World theatrical release in the west

Just a random thought I came up with. There's never actually been a western theatrical release of a One Piece movie (Other than a very limited showing of Movie 8 in the US) right?

Well, I think Funimation could take advantage of that with Strong World. They could simply advertise it as One Piece The Movie: "Strong world" (Or just One Piece: "The Movie") and make it a theatrical release, though it probably wouldn't run for long.

To tackle the fact that many people in the west know nothing of Franky and Brook, I think they could do a short recap of the story in the beginning of the movie, using clips of episodes, similar to how they did it at the beginning of Pokemon 4ever, to sort of get people up to speed with what's going on.

Not only do I think it would get more people into OP, but it would probably help the DVD sales and further the possibility of a TV deal as well.

In theory, your idea is good. If there was any One Piece movie to show, Strong World would be the one. It would definitely improve DVD sales.

However, they'd need to do a dub first and knowing funimation, that could take up to 2012 for a theatrical release. I'd love to see it in the theater, but I'm also wondering how many cinemas would actually play it.

As I said, in theory, it's a good idea.

It wouldn't work out. FUNi would have to pull BIG STRINGS to get a nation-wide theatrical release of the film… And since One Piece really isn't popular at all in the west, it'd be nothing short of a miracle for it to happen.

And even if it did, it surely would not last long in theaters because... sigh... One Piece isn't popular here.

I'd sooner see Naruto get a release like that, than One Piece. But even that won't happen. No anime will. America has pretty much shunned them by now.

animation (dont jump on me) does very well in theaters, there just haven't been enough over sea influences trying.

and to be honest if it bombs, which it shouldn't both most likely will. wont it hurt them? you know them spending a bunch of time on a movie translating it. plus an anime that only a small majority know about isnt going to make things easier either.

Edit: above comment: that's not helping anyone and they would never do that, costs or not the whole point is to expand the fan base. not alienate it further. besides the dub excellent, may i even dare say better.

this, people just dont understand what a dub does for a fanbase. like it or not the most popular anime over here in the us are popular BECAUSE OF THE DUB.
and as ive said countless times, the dub is fine (IMO better than the original), it just needs to be advertised.

Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away couldn't make money at the box office (even after it won best animated picture.) Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Hunter D and Naruto couldn't do better than single day or 2 theatre releases. And even Pokemon, the ultimate anime in the states juggernaut, gave up after the fourth, and even that was pretty limited release.

Hell, Princess and the Frog, with the Disney marketing machine behind it couldn't make a good profit. Why do you think something as visually bizarre as One Piece, in old fashioned 2-D animation, with a huge cast and years of continuity, that isn't even airing on tv anymore, would ever get a theatrical?

At best it'll get a 2 screen art house showing at some point just to make it eligible for awards. (And I think movie 8 might have gotten that treatment.)

I just hope Strong World gets that one night screening like Movie 8 got. Although when I attended and I was like the only other person there and had a hard enough time getting a ticket because they had no idea what movie I was talking about.

It would be great if your plan work, but well. In this day and age it won't, 3 or 4 years ago, it may have been crazy enough too work but not anymore. I don't even know if a very limited theater release would work. Your best bet is a con release.

A limited theatrical release of "Strong World" in America would definitely work. Anime companies including FUNimation have had several successful theater runs and will continue to do so going forward. "Evangelion 1.0" did pretty good according to FUNimation, "Summer Wars" I expect to do well. It's highly acclaimed as it is, they're starting in just two major cities where most of its type of audience will be, and depending on its success it will expand to other cities.

"Strong World" has enough hype and positive reaction already from a big enough fanbase to warrant a theatrical run. "Movie 8" had its own problems "Strong World" didn't, namely that none of the fans liked it and the theater locations were just bad. I even went to a theater where it was listed to be playing and no one who worked there knew about it, on top of that it didn't even play there o_O.

if it wasnt for the internet one piece movies would do good at the movies (better than 95% of the trash that is always on at the movies but why go pay to see it when you can see it for free on the internet?

If it wasn't for the internet, One Piece would get little to no publicity. No one would even know about the movies unless someone went to and back from Japan to spread news by word of mouth.

And people pay to see the movies because they support the series and want it to succeed.

seconded, the average person would be turned off by the idea of a subbed movie, and the big fans would have already seen it.

ya, after how 4kids dubbed it, if there wasn't the internet many people might not have given it a second chance.
