I can't really complain about their remaking old westerns, considering that this is pretty much the only way that westerns are being made at all nowadays.
And from the example of 3:10 to Yuma, they usually do things differently enough from the originals that they can be appreciated as something entirely seperate in their own right. (though the original 3:10 to Yuma was better than the remake)

First impressions seem to be very positive. I must say, the amount of talent involved with this film is really amazing. The Coen Brothers, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin… Awesome.
I liked the remake of 3:10 to Yuma so hopefully this one is good as well. And I love westerns. It's sad that they don't make any original ones anymore. It looks good from the trailer.
Coen Brothers movie and people expect anything less than great
Well, there was the sad attempt to adapt the Jonah Hex into a film, which would have otherwise been a good way to get westerns into more of a mainstream if more effort went into it.
I agree that I don't mind remakes, since many westerns in the 50s and 60s ended up going that way to make money off of well-known properties (The Virginian, Cimarron, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Billy the Kid, The Three Godfathers, Stagecoach) and the genre is prime for a revival, as the audience's appetite for morally ambiguous heroes isn't likely to wane anytime soon.
I don't consider Jonah Hex western.
Yeah, it's really not, but I sort of saw it as a failed attempt to revamp the genre to new audiences, similar the The Wild, Wild West ten years ago (though that one was arguably another remake)
Since the 'original' was based on a book anyway, I wouldn't really call this a remake.
Whatever you call it, it looks pretty sweet.
Definitely stoked to see this. Westerns (classic and modern-day) have absolutely come back around this decade, between this and Deadwood, Yuma, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Blood Meridian, etc.

I just finished Blood Meridian a few days ago and have just been completely unnerved ever since–in a good way, but wow what a chiller that was. I have no idea how any person can sit down and just have the mindset to approach that style of writing. It's gotten me rewatching Deadwood for about the 60th time. Not a real plus for my whiskey drinking and swearing habits.
Really looking forward to this, hopefully I can find a way to watch it sooner than later.
Everyone knows True Grit is really awesome and has great dialogue and performances, so I would like to talk about what I felt was majorly wrong with an otherwise pretty wonderful movie at times.
I thought the climax was inadequate, lacked any sense of fulfilment and the ending felt artificial and incomplete, with some details thrown in that were unnecessary and just felt superfluous.
! He saved me and I never saw him again. So I grow up and go see him. But he is gone, because he is in a circus now. But I go to the circus and he is dead. So I buried him on my family plot.
! Also I never saw the Texas Ranger ever again who was that guy
I think the climax in general was incredibly poorly directed, as if somebody was kicked out of the director's chair and tied up while a malicious stage-hand wraps everything up "just to be done with it", because the pacing got weirdly sped up.
! "We will never make it, we will never see them again. We are leaving for home and abandoning ever chasing after him again."
! And then he is directly across the river and they find him without even trying. That felt awkward as shit, although I have to admit I thought Cheney's dialogue in that scene was hysterical and really well-played.
! But from that point onwards, the movie trips on its face.
I was reading SN&R's review of this late last evening and stopped when I saw "Cohen Brothers". I didn't need to read anymore, I really want to see it in spite of it being a remake.
