About the appeal of the ninja:
I admit that I like ninjas more than pirates (even though I prefer One Piece). I've been like this since I was a kid (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and stuff). I've always used the ninja characters in fighting games…dressed up as a ninja for halloween when I was a kid...stuff like that. I was never a real big pirate fan as a kid.
It's a cultural thing. Westerners are more familiar with pirates, therefore ninjas are more fascinating. That could be one factor of One Piece's popularity over in Japan.

Agreed. Personally I fail to see why Ninjas are so popular. Yeah, they're cool but they have no honour and I don't think they follow the Code of Bushido. And as for fighting skills, to me they're no different from people who do TaeKwonDo or Karate. But that's just my opinion.

Well, I'm American and I think Naruto should just stay in Shonen Jump… I prefer One Piece and was going to make an ORPG similar to it until that damn 3d pirate MMORPG shown at E3, so I have to restart my plans when I'm more mentally prepared...

I personally think they are popular because of the mystery surrounding them. Some people say they didn't even exist (although, that could be because of their secrecy). They were kind of like the super secret agents of their day.

They were also thought to have supernatural powers...and even though they did not (just simple illusion and trickery), they encouraged people to think this, so they would be more feared.
But their training seemed to be even more rigorous than that of a samurai. They also trained with many weapons and tools - and most weapons actually doubled as tools.
However, this is just what my books say. Don't blame me if it's not correct...nobody will ever know for sure. I am a firm believer that ninja did exist though...in some form or fashion (I mean...come on, at least spies and assassins existed...so I don't see why so many people doubt the existance of the ninja).
Sorry for being off topic...just wanted to point out some stuff about why many people (myself included) find them so intriguing.
I do have to say that I like the historical image of the ninja more than the Naruto style ninja though...but that could be because ninjas seem so "normal" in Naruto, because there are so many (since that is the focus of the series). I usually like it better when there is a series with only a few ninja characters...it makes them stand out more.

Fair enough. I can't say I've really looked at them like that. I don't hate them though and do agree they are cool (heck my respect for them went up after that post), but I still prefer Samurais.
Anyway, back on topic. Like a number of other members, I would be interested in seeing how Oda feels about Naruto. Heck, if the two like each other's work, they might even do a crossover which could be interesting. I personally like crossovers so I'd be interested in seeing it.

True…although some ninjas were very honorable (Hattori Hanzo for example). They just had a sort of different kind of honor I guess. They were very honorable to whoever they served though. They also didn't party and drink like samurai...or at least from what I've read.
But most lower ranked ninjas, although feared, were not respected at all. If caught, they were tortured and executed.
Also, supposedely, the lowest rank (Genin) were the ones who carried out all the missions (and were the most despised by society). The Chuunin and Jounin were really more like the guys who set up the missions.
But despite all this, I still like Naruto. I'm just not a really picky person though....
Edit: Oh, and Rock Lee rocks. He's one of the main reasons I like the series (even if he is one of the most non-ninja like characters around...but who cares).

Naruto is also really big in South East Asia. Or in Malaysia and Indonesia at least.
I asked my friends why they won't read One Piece and they say the art sucks.

You're much more flexable than I could ever be. I don't really like Naruto, but that's because the story and characters didn't entertain me. I'm kinda picky when I read manga ('cause I usualy end up buying it), so if I'm not intrigued by the second or third volume, I just don't read it. Naruto was that way with me. The characters were plain, and the plot didn't really pick up. With One Piece, I found myself wanting to know more and more about the characters. After reading volume one of Naruto… I felt I pretty much knew them. Everyone seemed very one-sided, like they only have a certain amount of emotions and they can only use them a certain amount of times in each volume. Naruto's characters don't have much depth to them. I'm not going to say that OP's characters are perfect, because they're not. Sometimes their signature traits (Zoro's lazyness, Nami's greed) are overplayed a bit. But we do get to see many different sides to them. In the Arlong Arc, for example, we're exposed to a different side of Nami. She's cold, bitter and, quite frankly, not too likeable. After the situation is resolved, she comes back an even stronger character than she was before. I have no clue where I'm going with this. 
About the narutard thing... It's just a general term for people who like Naruto. Like calling someone black instead of african-american. It's just a nickname and doesn't really mean anything or do anyone any harm. And if you think it's childish, you're probably too mature for this forum.

I've always used that term for the noobish Naruto fans. You know, the ones that go out in public in headbands and tipe liek dis and crap.
But fans that I can talk to normally are okay. =3 I've always felt strange about liking some of the characters in the series. It's like…. I want to draw fanart and be all fan-girlish like I'm used to when I come across a movie or a series I like but there are so many One Piece fans who have all these ideas about the series and they haven't even GLANCED at it. When something is widely liked, yet clearly is very cliche and kind of shallow, people are always going to jump at every chance to bash it - its like how if you set a piece of a tree on fire in the woods, the place is going to burn. Like Jrock fans do with Jpop.
I don't always bash it, but I still find it funny when others do. Naruto is probably among the most easiest of manga to make fun of >_> its just asking for it with the type of feel it gives off and especially with how some of its fans think of One Piece.

I really like naruto too but it's just the crazed fans who give me the shivers. I do see some flaws in naruto as well but there are some high lights like the 1st ark, and some characters that really stand out like Rock Lee, Shikamaru, and more.
