i just think the problem is the start of one piece, the animation is outdated the art style isn't going to attract new viewers.

"Dragonball Z Kai" is basically refurbished episodes from two decades ago and it does great ratings. Now granted "One Piece" doesn't have that name recognition but it certainly doesn't have that sort of animation that Kai has holding it back.

I think it would be a good idea if they aired One Piece daily for the earlier episodes, and on the weekend like on Saturday they air episodes from the later episodes in HD. And when they promote it, treat as if people already know the show.

For example…

" One Piece is coming back in 2011 with brand new episodes! He is been gone for awhile, so if you forget our Straw Hat he was last seen hunting for gold in Skypeia, he is now on a adventure to find someone who can help his ship before it break's tides! dragon ball has it's as you pointed out it's name recognition. but that's not why dragon ball has better ratings. dragon ball got really succes for a reason. it got down to the point and it was about fighting. we all watched it to see the action.
and the animation of dragon ball z kai, while old. doesn't seem that outdated

both opening are solid done. but dbz kai's is better because it's redone with current animation quality but it also shows what the show is about, the fights.

but that alone would not have guarenteed dbz's succes

dragon ball has a famous worlwide name
the games are very popular.

dragon ball z kai has a much easier chance at succes than one piece.
one piece if anything is rather unknown.

alright, i just watched the 1st eps of both shows and i take back that the quality is bad, its the art styles

I think we all know regardless of name recognition, "Dragonball Z" will always be more popular than "One Piece" because of the content and the art style. Although in terns of modern animation, "One Piece" beats "Dragonball" because, obviously, "Dragonball" is older. "One Piece" has digital coloring and everything the episodes from just 10 years ago themselves have aged pretty well.

And I really, really wish that new show coming to Disney XD is "One Piece", but I'm not expecting it all due to the source's wording of what it is:

like someone mentioned on the one piece podcast, it'll definitely get a second chance eventually just due to one piece running for so long in japan. it may take a few YEARS, but if a marketable show keeps going, eventually someone will make another attempt at marketing it in america. the manga is doing well enough in america to show publishers that it has a solid american fanbase.

it's not rocket science; one piece simply needs to build name recognition by airing on tv, and being seen by people who either don't have preconceived negative ideas about it thanks to the 4kids dub, or to convince people who saw that dub that they were wrong about it. anime on tv overall seems like a dead market right now, though. dragonball kai is the only thing i see airing at a decent time, and regularly.

the show was so popular on adult swim that it got moved to the afternoon slot.

you have to keep in mind, even dragonballz only had a cult following back when it was airing on basic cable; it didn't instantly catch on as soon as it was aired. that show only caught mainstream popularity once it got picked up by funimation and moved to toonami.

5. "One Piece" is a big series, and I'm not just talking about it being high-profile. Hundreds upon hundreds of episodes and still going, a show like "One Piece" might require quite some care and attention in order to succedd. It needs just the right amount of timeslots in certain airtimes in order to find it's audience, because given its length it's quite a series to follow. And let's not forget the advertising that'd have to go into it in order for it to succedd beyond a season or two. It's quite a feat to keep consistently high ratings over so many episodes. Perhaps if "One Piece" wasn't such a stretched-out series it'd be easier for Nicktoons to take a chance on it, but that certainly might be a hurdle to get it on that channel.

I guess they could go the route of the original dbz run and only show 50-70 episodes a year. I don't know.

We've got to face the fact that One Piece has a lot of things stacked against it in terms of finding a decent mainstream audience on Western broadcast television. The series' wacky sense of humor, the artistic sensibilities that lean more towards Tex Avery than the kind of gritty testosterone fest that is DBZ and the like (which always appealed to the wrestling set), not to mention the high episode count amongst other things, it's just kind of an off-putting series to your average western viewer at first glance, and first glances count for a lot with serialized television. As a somewhat recent convert (been familiar with it for years but hadn't really given it a shot until 2007), I can attest to that firsthand.

I'm not saying it can't find an audience, but the odds of it becoming a big hit are astronomically low, and as fans we must temper our expectations accordingly. Getting a nice low-expectations basic cable syndication spot would be the best bet to have the series stick around, but it would have to be under such circumstances that it wouldn't be expected to bring in top-notch ratings… because it most likely won't.

People are saying that, like DBZ, all One Piece needs is a second chance… But they fail to see that that 'scenario' already happened! And we got SHIT.

One Piece (4Kids) premeired on Saturday mornings and didn't do so hot.

Dragonball Z (saban) premeired on Saturday mornings and didn't do so hot.

One Piece premiered on Toonami and did good... Until is was canceled during the FUNi episodes, of all things.

DBZ premired on Toonami and became a break-out hit and finished it's run. And it now runs on Nicktoons with Kai which has become a hit as well.

...

You see? One Piece... just wasn't meant to be successful here, guys. It already had two chances. Three if you count the start of the FUNi version as another try. It peaked in 2006... and that was during the 4Kids episodes of Drum-Alabasta. But then it started to dwindle...

That was the best we'll probably ever get, I'm afraid. =/ All we can hope for now is the DVDs, but even that doesn't seem safe anymore. This series future here is just a big effin' headache.

Guys I know by "American TV" you mean "United States" buy anyway I will just post it here.. ONE PIECE finally got a second chance on Mexican TV and on Canal 5 to boot!!
Canal 5 is one of the most seen channels in Mexico since its a free channel in most of Mexico..
Anyway the episodes are still from the 4kids dub, so yeah Sanji with Lolipop, weird enough Luffy attacks are "Gomu Gomu No X" and the opening and ending sequences are "You are" and the first ED (Cant remember name) was this on 4Kids dub?? (BTW episodes are from Alabasta so maybe 4Kids stopped using One Piece rap in Alabasta?)
The bad news.. is at 4 AM, that is plain horrible, worst time-slot ever..

And earlier this month, someone on FUNi's Facebook asked them when One Piece will get another chance on TV. FUNi replied "we'll let you know when it airs on the FUNimation Channel" or something along the lines of that.

That's old they've been running episodes on their on-demand service a while back starting with episodes on Season Two Seventh Voyage. It doesn't mean anything in regards to the linear 24/7 channel.

Anyway like I've said before I don't think it's a big deal, I think by now other channels have passed on it and this is their best option. FUNimation Channel keeps saying they're gonna make announcements in the coming months about expansion so we'll see. In the meantime you can call your local cable provider and ask for the channel. And let's not forget this is just speculation, we don't know what that franchise title is. Also I don't think if it does end up there it eliminates its chances of getting on, say, Nicktoons or Disney XD. Maybe if it does well on FUNi Channel or helps it get into more homes those other channels will consider "One Piece".

So this suggests they're leaning more towards shows with available HD masters so they don't need to do the upscale.

Isn't 207 when One Piece premiered in widescreen/HD? Isn't that also the speculated first episode of the Season 4 that hasn't had a DVD announcement yet? Isn't One Piece a possible candidate for one of the shows fans would get really excited over if it got on TV (or at the very least us)?

Perhaps they can premiere episodes on the website kind of like they do for the simulcast? At least they'll get more ad revenue from that. Exactly. Especially with Funimation trying so hard to get the channel to more providers that's a potential for more and more viewers.
