So my big bro's coming over for Christmas, and I wanted to give him something interesting for once, so I ordered Akira on dvd. I haven't seen it myself though for what I've heard it's supposed to be good, so I'd like some opinions from you guys. Is it good?
Also I know big bro likes Neon Genesis Evangelion; would you with that knowledge in mind say Akira was a good choice?
Is Akira as good as people say it is?
-
-
well, yes it's good, but the end is rushed and sucks in my opinion.
in fact they took the 14 vol long manga, used the 5-6 first volumes to make the movie and somehow managed an ending with it.
-
Standing alone I don't think it's bad. I wouldn't say it's close to Eva stylistically or anything, though. I liked it as an action type of sci-fi title.
-
For what it did for the Genre it was Huge
the movie I found to be awsome but the Manga blows it away
-
It's… all right. But that's all I'll give it.
-
I really, really don't like it.
It's too gory for me. Plus, the ending shocked me. Actually, the bit just before the ending.
Well, you'll see.
And if your brother likes futuristic, cyberpunk style stuff, Akira would probably be good. And the guy who voices Tetsuo voices Tai from Digimon.
-
I love this movie! I'll get to reading the manga someday
-
You haven't watched Akira? It's like, definition of anime classic. I cry. O_o
Neon Genesis Evangelion is somewhat totally different but he'll enjoy Akira for sure.
-

Eh, its 6 volumes.
At least in the original edition…
NONE THE LESS 0_0
These are MASSIVE 6 volumes that cost upwards of 30 bucks a pop.
So Igalsfy is right. The movie has a crammed story. -

Depending on which version you get.
-
I did not like the movie, it just seemed somewhat pathetic to me, maybe how my Brother hyped the movie up so much and then when I seen it, I was let down.
Anyways it's ok at best for a die hard anime fan.
-
Keep in mind that Akira is a condensed movie version of a manga.
I thought it was OK. It's something all anime fans should probably see, but I don't think it's really the great godly anime movie that some people make it out to be. It's strange, violent, and kind of confusing, certainly not uplifting. But it's been a really long time since I've watched it.
-
I've never watched Akira because it's really gory. Not for me, thanks.
I've seen Eva, and only heard about Akira. From what I can say, they are both similar in the fact that they take place in a very dark and bleak future. However, while Eva is a psychological journey through the mind of others, Akira is apparently a big action film. Also, Akira is highly inspired by American culture. Big bikes, badass attitudes, big action, you know how it goes.
Based on what I've heard about, it doesn't interest me. I have a feeling I wouldn't like this film even if I could stomach it's gore. But there's no denying that it put anime on the map. So it's like the Hulk Hogan of anime. It isn't the best, but it is what put the style on the map.
-
I love cyberpunk settings, and the animation is great even today. So much detail.

also it should be noted the entire movie was done entirly by hand
-
I've quite mixed feelings for what happens in Akira, it is a classic and has withstood the test of time, the first time I watched it I was like "… Whoa." Good film, at least worth a watch to check it out.
-
Depending on which version you get.
Ah, yes.
The dub version of Tetsuo is voiced by the same guy who does the dub Tai.
There we go.
-
Nope, there's two dubs of it, one was by Geneon I forgot the other one though…
-
Akira is legendary for good reason. They don't make anime like this anymore sadly.
-
@Pass:

If you've never seen it, how do you know it's gory? And how can you say stuff like "it isn't the best" or say whether it's similar to another story or not?
If you haven't seen it, you haven't seen it. If it doesn't interest you, that's fine too, but posting a whole thing about why you think it's good or not is pointless if you haven't seen it. I hate it when people do that.
-
It's great even by today's standards, but not "legendary" at least for me. Worth a watch, still got the VHS of it somewhere.
-
I can't say I wasted my time watching it, but Paulie's comment pretty much echoes how I feel towards the movie.
It has great animation and awesome settings, for sure. I just thought it was… kind of a sloppy film on a whole.
-
Shit folks, its the manga thats legendary.
-
no the anime is quite legendary in its own right because it was one of the driving forces that jumpstarted anime over here (along with Ghost in the Shell).
-
Saw and didnt like it.
that whole last scene of the film was Scary as heck.
-
Akira is overrated. It's something that isn't considered a classic.
-
overrated…I would call Evangelion (the worst anime and manga in existence) to be overrated not Akira. Since almost every anime geek I meet they all end up talking about Evangelion and bost the story so damn much as if there isn't anything else out there like it. Than again most anime fans I meet are dull, boring and are into shitty ass jpop groups.

Well, Miracles is just being a troll as usual.
Anyway, I haven't seen Akira in years. The only parts I can clearly remember now are the motorcycle gang fight at the beginning, Tetsuo's wacky hospital scene with the walking toys, and the ending
! when he turns into that fleshy blob.

I wouldn't call Evangelion overrated anymore since almost everybody says it's overrated, making me wonder if anyone actually likes it. Where are the mythical Evangelion fanboys these days? Did they drop off the face of the earth or something?
-
I'm currently trying to watch Evangelion, and while I think the symbolism is quite interesting, I can easily see why people wouldn't like it or call it pretentious. The Rebuild remake is artistically beautiful though.
As fro Akira, I don't think I have any excuse to not watch it, seeing as how the university library where I'm working had three DVD copies of it.

Rebuild is great.
As for the original, I advise you don;t listen to the discussion until you've gone through the series and made up your own mind. Unlike other shows, the debate over Evangelion usually sours someone's first impression because they either go in expecting the worst show or the best show.

The you-know what fest probably turned them off to the series as a whole.
-
I never thought Akira was that good. But that's the anime movie, haven't read the manga. It's quite interesting that almost everyone has seen this tho.
-
not really AKIRA was one of the 2 films that really drove the anime movement into the west
and the manga is beyond words
-
So, now I'm interested in Akira. Is the manga pac on lurk the original manga or something else? Also, would one recommend the anime before reading the manga just to see how good it is, or just the manga?
-
Never saw the anime of Akira or Evangelion but have read the manga of both and the manga for both are great in my book.
-

the movie is still good after reading the manga just not as good
and yeah the ones on Lurk are the ones your want like a 180 something mbs a volume 6 of em

I agree Shinji has to be the GAYEST character in anime existence. But the Same can be said about Akira, Biker gangs? a FREAKIN GOVERNMENT LAB RAT? Dude their was nothing special about this show it is terribly overrated just like Evangelon and Death note.

Spoiler:
when he turns into that fleshy blob.If I am a troll why don't you come and prove me wrong about Akira then? Hell you just freakin gave away most of it anyway.
-
I have to admit I only watched Akira to compare it to South Park's parody in Trapper Keeper. I never read the manga, but I found the anime to be interesting. I liked it overall and it was very well animated.
The gore was a real turn-off though. I would probably watch it again if it weren't for the gore. The fact my school's library has the Laserdisc version, which apparently has a different dub than the DVD, is the only thing that might make me go through it a second time.
-

so what do you just watch the pretty pictures and not listen to the words?
-
I liked the beginning with all the biker stuff, then the plot just kinda went up in the air. It really seemed more like an artsy film than anything else.
-

Yea thats true all the talk of this movie that i heard was that it was the father of DBz and such. So if you take it at face value and watch for the fighting parts then it's great. Outside of that I found it lackluster.
-
so what do you just watch the pretty pictures and not listen to the words?
I see and hear…
-
I read the manga, but sadly was not impressed. You could say its one of those 'the best of its time' series.
-
I just finished the movie in Blu-Ray quality, hoping to emulate the 1988 theatre experience. This is apparently the second time I've seen it, since I don't remember the first, but it might as well have been the first.
On the whole, the art, animation and acting (overall production) was ridiculously high. Given the story's age, I wasn't expecting some profoundly philosophical and original premise, and was pleasantly surprised to see something that wasn't copycatted endlessly in the 20 years since the movie was released.
However on the whole, it wasn't as impressive a movie as I thought. Tetsuo turning into a little bastich didn't make sense, and his outrageous power was also similarly annoying. While I liked the one line non-sequitur explanations for certain events, the lack of explanation for many events and attempt at a philosophical subtone were noticeable and irritating.
The last 30 minutes of the movie was just bizarre, although I cheered for Kaneda and his undying courage and dedication, in spite of the situation he was forced to confront.
Overall, C+. Akira is a movie that artistically aged well, and still looks good, but the story/plot and development doesn't hold up nearly as successfully.
-
The story plot were never very good.
It's a crammed adaptation, what do you expect. -
Akira is a fantastic "first anime" to introduce someone to anime with, just to show you what the genre can do in terms of depth, style, art quality, realism, violence, gore and adult content, to really showcase that "this isn't like american cartoons." Along with Vampire Hunter D, ten years ago it was one of THE staple films to bring people into anime. EVERYONE saw and knew Akira, and it was THE starter for most people. (cause 10 years ago they only sold about 40 anime TAPES amongst alll the companies, and Akira was the big daddy. It was a very different time.)
The animation, all done by hand, 20 years ago, is still fantastically mindblowing, and the music is incredible as well. Some of the action sequences, like the opening bike chase and the helicopter sequence in the sewers are amazing.
Beyond that, its a pretty weak adapation that ends before the titular character even shows up, that stops right where the manga really starts getting interesting. The manga is far far better. And the movie, for all its visual splendor and amazement, fails to really explain or tell the story, or have a proper resolution.
Its still groundbreaking, revolutionary and a huge part of anime heritage, and anyone that claims to love anime needs to see it at least once, on the biggest tv screen possible. But that doesn't mean its good.
Also, its at its best when its the old dub that has Cam Clark (Leonardo the ninja turtle, Max Sterling on Robotech) as Kaneda.
-
Wait, the Akira movie doesn't cover the entire manga  .
-
@Kairouseki:
Wait, the Akira movie doesn't cover the entire manga  .
They barely summarize the first half, and it's all done very differently.
The manga's final fights are sort of in there as the movie's finale, but aside from that and using Kaori the second half of the manga (the best part) is completely absent.
-
I started reading the manga from volume 3, and changes have already started from there.
It's not nearly as amazing as people are claiming though. I guess it's partially because I've already seen the movie.
