Seeing as it's one of the most popular manga/anime series that exists now, and they've done a decient job of staying faithful to the manga so far, I think it will end the same way as the manga.

As DISEASE said too, they'd lose a lot of fans who casually enjoy the show, but would be unwilling to follow manga.And also, as Clover said - it's massively popular on so many levels. Not gonna happen.

Ah yes, the anime people are the casual audience. Downloading huge torrents of 20-30 minute movies is definitely for the layman rather then online readers of a comic book for eleven year old boys.

GT was canned due to poor ratings. It'd make no sense for Toei to make the exact same mistake with OP.

The whole GT/Shitpudden/Final Act scenario I actually see being very likely. It may get to the point where Toei is just sick of tailgating the manga and decide to end "One Piece", let a lot of time pass, then start a new series called One Piece: New World or something.

… What the hell was I just thinking? I doubt Toei cares that they have to filler everything in order to stay behind the manga, they're making millions on the crap while only paying the animators chump change. Besides, it gives Toei an excuse to make a One Piece Kai in a few decades and get even more money.
In short, no, the anime will keep going until the very end of the manga. Toei isn't stupid (when it comes to knowing how to make money, that is).

Well I sorta meant in countries where it's transmitted on television, like in Japan, or say the dub for Germany etc, Where all they have to do is flick through channels. Just casual watchers who like the show but aren't really super fans. And anyway, aren't some people just like that? They just prefer watching a show to reading the manga?

OP , the only reason that ever happens is because the product is not as sucessfull as they wanted it to be . I think that's why stuff like the GS Mikami anime never even made it to the one over reaching arc in the whole series .
Usualy this is done after a set amount of episodes that I believe constitute a "season" in Japan , I think around the 52 mark , though anime itself never take season breaks , for the better or (mostly) worst of it .

! I really hope Toei doesn't make a new series when they reach the timeskip. I mean, they've made almost 500 episodes since 1999.
They should keep it going and make One Piece one of the longest series in Japan. -
