Its a slow day on the site so I figure I may as well pick everybody's collective brains.
Every so often I get sick of all the music I own and want something new and (hopefully) different. I have reached that magical point and am looking for suggestions for something new to listen to. What I am looking for would hopefully have quality music, depth without pretension and hopefully be relaxing (of course I find Opeth relaxing so this can be stretched quite a long way). The genre is really unimportant so long as the music is good. In the past when I have hit the musical wall I have asked around and found stuff like Deep Forest and Delerium (quite a spectacular band) and 8 1/2 Souvenirs and my eternal love for the ethereal genre. My best and most reliable source for ideas is gone so I'm going out of my head trying to find something new to listen to.
Anyway, I am open to any and all suggestions to get me out of this musical rut. I'm bored and need something new. Ideas?

Aerosmith is my all time favorite and their sound varies so much that it's hard to get sick of them. I can always find Aerosmith to listen to, no matter my mood.
Techno - try Freezepop
It's light and fun.Lounge Covers - Richard Cheese
He lounge-ifies alternative music. Good stuff.I'll think about more…
-
I'll sound such a nerd but lately I've been listening Poets of the Fall, they made the theme song for Max Payne 2. Here's a little sample: Late Goodbye
-
So if I understood correctly you want something non-fast and angry, just quality and relaxation…Dunno why but the first thing that comes into my mind is Rainbow and Jethro Tull's "Aqualung". I think they can make you relax. Then, you can try The Tea Party, Green Carnation, Skyclad(more folk than the others), any good doom band that you have(hey why not?!), maybe Arcturus' "La Masquerade Infernale" (cause if we talk bout quality, then we're here!), Dead Soul Tribe which sound like a mix of Jethro Tull/Psychotic Waltz/and some 70's band mixes, and even Fantomas'(with Mike PAtton, YAHOO!!!) album "Delirium Cordia". Hope I helped. If I think of anything else, I'll post.
-
I'm always up for some Queen.
-
Liquid Tension Experiment - Acid Rain
Joe Satriani - Summer Song
Iron Maiden - Afraid to Shoot StrangersI have one other song that I thought was relaxing whenever I hear it but I don't think the name for the song was right. I got it off of Kazaa lite, it's Symphony X - Whispers.
-
FRANK ZAPPA.
-
"To All Tha Dreamers" by SOUL'd OUT. Man, that song is awesome. It could very well be Franky's unoffical song. (The real song would be called something like "Feelin' SUPER!")
-
I recommend Pink Floydd's The Wall and anything from Queen or Iron Maiden.
-
You would do good to go with some Bowie too.
-
And ACDC
-
I'm just curious, which Opeth songs do you find relaxing. I recently started listening to them I and like them so far.
-
So much music so little time….
Vilda -
Freezepop is some fun sounding stuff. Somehow makes me think of BIS when I first ran into them (the fact that they are different and fun - they don't sound a thing like them).
Richard Cheese scares me. He lounge-ified Slayer for God's sake! I don't know how long I could listen before I laughed myself unconscious. Very fun stuff. And I happened to find Me First And The Gimme Gimmes while looking him up and I think that I might be digging them.Yoska -
I enjoyed that. Got some samples from their site. Good stuff. Very mellow by my standards and mellow works right about now.JudasChrist -
Where oh where to begin. Old Rainbow might be fun. I'm having a good time digging back into my old tapes and I think there is some rainbow down in there. Aqualung is tied with 2112 as my favorite 'classic rock' cd (both are more metal than the 70's standard - both things I listened to as a kid) so its always a good listen. I might have to dig out more of my metal roots. A little more Deep Purple and Uriah Heep in my diet would do me a world of good. Kansas maybe, that'd be mellow.
I don't have much doom left in my collection. I loved Candlemass and never heard anybody doom it better so they are probably the extent of my doom selections. Old Trouble is the only other thing I might consider doomy. Got that whole Sabbath vibe happening deep in there. I might have some Saint Vitus buried someplace.
I have been hearing a little Arcturus now and again on Gotham Radio and its good stuff. About the only metal I think I can deal with right now would be them and Katatonia. I'm trying to remember Skyclad. Been forever since I first heard them (if its the same one - I think there are two of them) and I don't remember much of an impression. Green Carnation I like and was actually looking for them this past weekend but I don't have a good metal store nearby. Never tried Fantomas. Don't think I can deal with Patton right now (though Take This Bottle does fit my mood).Sarquiss -
Classic rock is on the menu right now so I might just have to dig out some Queen. Good suggestion. I really don't listen to them enough.Ral -
Afraid to Shoot Strangers is on half the playlists on my mp3 player. Great song and good for my mood. Satriani is also a good idea. Haven't listened to him in years. Symphony X is a possibility. Never really given them a chance and this might be the opportunity. Not big into the epic metal thing though. Liquid Tension Experiment is interesting. Like the keyboards. Might have to check them out more.Cap'n Carter -
 I'm having Zappa flashbacks! I can only deal with him in small doses.Zio -
I can't find anyplace that I can manage to get a listen to it. Trying like crazy but no luck so far.Solar Knight -
Love Floyd and some of their more mellow stuff might just hit the spot. Second recommendation for Queen. Gonna have to try and find some. I think I have some someplace (1100 or so cds to sift through). Iron Maiden I listen to a lot. I actually prefer their first two with Paul DiAnno and listen to them a lot. I've been listening to ACDC for close to 30 years straight now. They are a constant in my music rotation, like Hendrix.Sarquiss -
Bowie might work out really well. Hmm... digs out Young AmericansThanks everybody for your suggestions! Keep 'em coming!

Actually I usually just pop in Orchid or Morningrise and let it play (I've been a fan for a long time - I remember waiting for an import copy of Morningrise to finally make its way to me). They aren't completely mellow or anything, I just find strange things relaxing at times. The entire Damnation cd is mellow stuff (Deliverance is its sister cd and is all heavy stuff) and works well for me as far as relaxing music.
And the live DVD is exceptional. They play one light set and one heavy set. And its cheap too. I can't recommend it enough. -
Ah, I was going to recommend Me First. But…I didn't.
But I do love them. I have three of their CDs, I've been meaning to get their latest - "Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Ruin Danny's Bar Mitzvah" -
Well, I'm glad that you've at least listened to Zappa. He's probably my favorite musician ever.
My favorite songs by David Bowie are Space Oddity, Let's Dance, and Under Pressure (a GREAT combo with Queen; also where Vanilla Ice stole the bassline for Ice, Ice Baby).
I was going to suggest The Aquabats, but you seem to want more relaxing stuff, and the Aquabats are a pretty fastpaced, and severely goofy ska band.
-
I can dig on Aquabats. :D Compared to what I normally listen to (a highly abrasive mix - generally anything with strong emotions makes the mix) they probably would be relaxing and mellow. And Zappa is required listening, I just can't take large doses.
I just tripped over a band I've heard but had no idea who they were and it might be just what I need. Qntal: Its medieval influenced electronic goth taking what Love Is Colder than Death did one step further.
Still wide open to any and all suggestions!

I migth as well keep on advertising Finnish music :P. Here's a few apparently somewhat popular english singing bands which I can recall right away. I'm really not a fan of these groups but you might not have heard of them. Riksu could perhaps give better advices.
Be warned, this are more of mainstream teen rock:
The 69 Eyes - Devils trailer
The Rasmus - In the Shadows sample
HIM - Sorry, I couldn't find any good samples but Amazon's review had some.
Nightwish - Nemo sample
Negative - In My Heaven sampleAnd just for kicks a dance song:
Beats and Styles - Dynamite radio sampleEdit: How could I forgot the old good Hanoi Rocks. Check out the music videos ;). Glamour Rock in it's best.
-
w00t! Israeli Music!:
HaDag Nachash - their older stuff is funkier, their newer stuff is more Hip Hop
Subliminal - Rap
Idan Raichel - Israel-Ethiopian fusion
Sarit Hadad - Israeli pop at its most irritating
David Broza - Excellent singer/songwriter
HaYehudim - Punk

oi oi, are you saying that i'm a mainstream teeny-rocker?
nah, mate, i don't really listen to finnish music that much. (only went to see the 69 eyes because my friend asked me to, and the tickets were cheap, and it's a pretty good chance they'll never come here again, and sod it, it was a damn good gig.)there are few good acts here and there, but i think yoska already said the ones that could be recommended.
but there you are absolutely right, bangkok shocks, shaigon shakes, hanoi rocks. (or how did it go..)
without them, i think the finnish music industry still might be somewhere laying in the bottom of the pit.but to get back on topic, how about some good-old-fashioned punk rock-bands, like the ramones and clash?
-
Funny, I was thinking about the Ramones this morning on the way to work. I love the hell out of the Ramones. Never did the Clash much. I was more into skate-punk back in the day. Didn't even know who the Ramones were until college and by then all the good skate-punk had disappeared or gone crossover so the Ramones were a breath of fresh air for me. I think I'll try to track down a good punk station online. Something get me through til 5:00 rolls around and I get to escape.
Finnish stuff I don't really know any of except Nightwish who I like and Him who I have never heard but have seen stacks and stacks of cds from. 69 Eyes sounds (to me) like a softer goth version of Danzig (!?) and I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'll check out the rest of these when I get home tonight (firewall here at work blocks most worthwhile stuff on the internet).
I'll check out these Israeli bands when I get home as well. Idan Raichel sounds like it could be neat stuff and the older HaDag Nachash could be really cool as well (I love funk but don't particularly care for hip-hop).
-
Well normyk pal, if you have Saint Vitus anywhere near you, just MELT the records from the hearing! They're better than Candlemass in my opinion, and old Trouble are good too. My best doom suggestions would be Cathedral and Solitude Aeturnus, cause Rob Lowe is GOD!
Mike Patton's ability to sing every way he wants is priceless: So according to your mood you can hear the song you want from Faith No More or his other projects. Art, not bullshit, mate.
Aqualung sure is the best rock album for me. Ian's a genius.
Maybe you could try the new Primordial one, which rocks, the Lamented souls one with Simen Hestnaes on vocals (something like epic/melodic/doomy thing), or even In Extremo, which is a very good folk band and they can cheer you up.
Hope I helped. -
I don't know what of the Israeli music you'll be able to find. Maybe I'll upload some of it.
-
356 hasn't came out yet and I've nothing to do so I thought I would give yet more recommendations.
Like zillion years ago I was a huge fan of Children of Bodom (Silent Night - Bodom Night) but I've gone past that stage. Although I still like to listen heavy metal once I get into the mood. I saw Diablo's (Read my scars) gig at Ruisrock festival and it was okey I guess. Lordi (go into extras) just amuse me.
I think there no other band than The Crash (Star) that could annoy me in such a great extent. I would really like to recommend Kwan (Unconditional Love), the only hiphop group I can tolerate but couldn't find any good sample of their older and better stuff.
Edit: Yes, I'm bored. Here's Bittersweet (click the picture and don't mind the guy speaking German) video by Apocalyptica featuring singers of HIM and The Rasmus.
-
Hmm, I'm more of a rock person that enjoys alternative rock, punk rock, and such of the like, though I have a variety of tastes (I guess), so I'm not sure if you'll enjoy some of the songs I'm about to say. I find the Burnout 3 OST has a lot of calm in a way, but still rockin' music to listen to. Some of my favourites from the soundtrack include (Well, almost all of the songs if not all….. but ones that stick out are): Midtown's "Give It Up", 1208's "Fall Apart", Motion City Soundtrack's "My Favorite Accident", New Found Glory's "At Least I'm Known for Something", the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated", Franz Ferdinand's "This Fire", and F-Ups' "Lazy Generation". I was tempted to go on with the list, but I'll stop there for now. B) "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day is also very good.
-
I have a combination of hip hop, soul, and rock. Michael Franti and Spearhead-the albums Stay Human or Everyone Deserves Music. Hope you enjoy it if you try it.
-
Jacobo -
Michael Franti - Wow! Funky! I am liking him a lot. I think this is going on my shopping list. I can listen to this all day.Vilda -
Idan Raichel - Wow again! Israel-music.com had some samples you can hear and I think it is right up my alley. More often than not when I end up in a rut I go international. World music has saved my sanity more than once. This has some great variety and is spectacular music for me to chill to.Yoska -
Lordi? What the heck is up here? Its like some wierd WASP meets GWAR in a haunted house in the 80s. They would have ruled the 80s if they were around then. Kwan sounds pretty good, I have to look into them some more. I can see what people see in H.I.M. but its not quite my cup of tea. COB gets regular play from me (I loved Thy Serpent so I had to check COB out - not quite as good but still fun).Rasengan Zero -
If I can track it down I will probably get it. Sounds like a good disk. I might have a bit of trouble finding it though.JudasChrist -
I have some Primordial someplace. Now that they are on Metal Blade I should be able to get their new one. I can't find my St. Vitus at all and its annoying me. I know I have at least one of their discs someplace! I bought Forest of Equilibrium back in the day because I loved everything that Earache was releasing but that is the only Cathedral I have ever owned. I heard a lot on Snakenet that I liked though so I might track down some of their more recent stuff. FOE was too sludgy for me. In Extremo I enjoy in small doses. And Patton is the single most versitile singer I have ever heard. The range of sounds that come out of him is almost frightening. King for a Day is one of my all time top 10 cds (and Angel Dust is close behind).I've been saving a couple of hundred dollars of amazon.com gift certificates for an occasion like this and am building a nice shopping list with everybody's help. Thank you all for your recommendations! :D
