@Cyan:
A remake of The King of Comedy starring Joaquin Phoenix and also Robert DeNiro is here and Martin Scorsese is involved and what the fuck
Joker by way of King of Comedy/Taxi Driver is fine by me.

It's hard to tell whether his rise to supervillaindom (holy crap, that's a word? There's no red underline under it when I typed it…) takes place before or after the appearance of Batman in Gotham. I wonder how that timing works out here.

Well they've confirmed that the young boy in the first trailer Joker interacts with through the gate is a young Bruce Wayne, and Thomas Wayne is a prominent character, it's all but confirmed this is a Batmanless Gotham.
Now all we need is a cameo by Jack Nicholson.
What's interesting is that Phoenix in this looks kinda like a younger, sicker De Niro.
I thought the King of Comedy reference was great.
This movie seems like it has nothing to do with superheroes and villains. And that's pretty great in my view

Well this Joker is no spring chicken so it's hard to take seriously that by the time Batman is getting started (twenty-ish years later?) that this Joker is still capable of posing a threat to him. Them being roughly the same age is what makes them such a great hero-villain match-up.
I like the trailer. If anything the presence of Ways is probably the part that makes me most anxious because I suspect it would be more cohesive without them.

Interesting. I've known people to like the idea that Joker is obsessed with Batman and is born from him. But I think it's a first to hear that they should be of similar age. Since they don't physically fight(Joker doesn't have formal training or superpower) why is it an important element to you and why does it make him a threat to be younger?

Well not every version of the Joker abstains from fisticuffs with Batman (the one from the mediocre The Batman cartoon was positively spry! But then so was the tubby little Penguin, so that might just have been that showrunner's preference for how to depict the villains). But my main exposure was Batman: The Animated Series and Bruce Wayne struck me as being in his mid to late thirties or early forties, as did the Joker. Having an obvious age gap there, one that was really visible and tangible, would have probably given me an alternate take on it but that version of the two of them is the quintessential one for me. They're the ideal. Having the Joker incapable of being as flexible as he ought to be when he's cornered and has to start throwing punches makes him less appealing as a villain. He should be THE scariest S.O.B. to have to fight against in a hand-to-hand scuffle, being so psychotic and unpredictable. I get that he's got his henchmen and whatnot to throw at Batman to keep him at bay but he shouldn't be relying on that because he literally physically HAS to. He doesn't get to be Batman's greatest villain if he never gets face to face with him. Does that make sense? Also then you get the sense that "I'm going to be around as long as you are, Bats." Powerful dramatic tool there that only works if they have the same life expectancy.
I mean that's why we have Joker knifing Bruce in Return Of The Joker and practically having him at his mercy.

Because of the age mismatch, which I still maintain is bad. Having them be the same age radically changes the dynamic of their relationship, for the better.
My ideal group for a live action universe. If only Warner Bros could get their house in order. I know 8 is a lot. Apropos, DC has announced that 4 of these characters are in development for films in the last 4 years. When they'll follow through is the question
Apart from the Billy Batson side of Shazam, I don't think they're skewing quite as young as a lot of your list would be (at least the versions I'm familiar with). Also I'm not familiar with the person in the hat. And no Flash or other speedster? For shame!

She is The Question. Specifically the Renee Montoya iteration. A male Question is a prominent character in Justice League Unlimited and the main inspiration for Rorschach in Watchmen.

Yup, DC is mostly 30+ characters. So, I get what you're saying. Jaime and Static are definitely too young. Interestingly enough, they are 2 of the 4 that have been reported as in development for films. The other 2 are Zatanna (solo) and Etrigan (group for JL Dark). Renee is already confirmed for Birds of Prey (February). Doubt she goes the Question route tho

But they got Rosie Perez to play her. I mean, I know she played a dirty cop in Pineapple Express but still. Hard to really take her seriously.

Rosie in Do The Right Thing and Fearless showed me her range a long time ago. The only thing I question is the writing and visuals from Birds of Prey. I don't love the recent teasers

Disagree about her in DTRT but I haven't seen Fearless. A Night on Earth didn't make her look very good either (at least I think that was her).
And yeah, the teasers are inadequate to get me jazzed about BoP. Most teasers we see nowadays aren't just a jumble of rapid jump-cuts like the one I saw in front of It: Chapter 2.
Whereas with the Joker you're watching a more or less regular guy descent into evil, and that's certainly the impression the trailers gave, I'm not quite sure what this is. What's the plot? Is this a movie about a bad person continuing to be bad, or is there a redemption story here? Not that familiar with the character. Remember little of Suicide Squad. Looks like she kills people here.
I think people unfamiliar with Harley Quinn won't really know what to think of this. A series of crazy imagery isn't enough.
I hope them focusing so hard only on Margot is marketing strategy cause the other characters are not known to the general public, and they will actually play a big role instead of being second fiddles to Margot Robbies Vanity Project.
I wonder if they're going to make the journey entirely meaningless by having her fall back into the Joker's hands yet again.
Hoping they'll find a way to dazzle since only one of the group has an actual power and we've kinda already seen that a lot in the CW shows and several times in other movies like Push.
Well, we already know she's in the James Gunn Suicide Squad sequel/reboot, and nobody liked the Jared Leto version of Joker she was paired with, so I imagine she'll stay separate.

So they're plowing ahead with the same continuity still? It makes it confusing why they're not just calling it Suicide Squad II rather than The Suicide Squad. According to the Predator franchise there should be at least two other movies in between a title change of that magnitude.
Saw Joker today, really well acted but just so god damn depressing I need to go watch something a little more uplifting now

I thought as much from when I saw the first trailer, when he got his sign stolen and then beaten with it. And we all know there's obviously no happy ending because how could there be?

Yeah I knew going in it would be depressing but I just didn't know how much, now I need to watch a fun movie like the first Avengers or something
I don’t know much about the film Taxi Driver but I heard Joker is very similar to that. Saw it’s on Netflix and thought of giving it a watch before going to see Joker (if I do see it)
I saw Joker the other night. I thought it was absolutely…..OK. Nothing amazing, but not terrible.
I mean there are a few twists in it, and some mind games played, but it's exactly what you'd think it is after seeing the trailer. Mentally ill guy gets treated like shit by everyone, snaps, and keeps going further off the deep end. That's the film.
The more I hear about the Joker movie, the more I think that its prerelease public hype/criticism and superhero genre legacy going forward will be more interesting to analyze than the film itself.
Really great performance form Joaquin Phoenix
I really liked the movie.
I'm very confused as to why people seem to think this movie is going to sweep the oscars, it's got a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes that's barley higher than Thor Dark World
I mean I wouldn't be surprised if Joaquin Pheniox gets a best actor award at all, he did an amazing job just not sure it will win much else
The score went down cause critics are reeing.
I'm not all that interested in the Joker character, but I can't really resist Joaquin movies. He's just too good at his job.

Ratings on RT don't necessarily mean much…
Green Book - 78%
Bohemian Rhapsody - 61%
Vice - 66%
American Sniper - 72%
The Revenant - 79%
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - 46%

Yeah, at least a few of those deserved even lower scores than they got.
Just like certain other recent movies, the marketing and coverage from press and customers plus screechers (counting plenty of witless famous figures) causing a Streisand Effect in a desperate attempt to badmouth it, tells an engrossing story that said product could never hope to match.
So anyone get shot by a Incel?

I've pretty much gone around saying that it's 2019's funhouse mirror version of Ghostbusters (2016) in this regard.
So anyone get shot by a Incel?
There was brief panic at one theater cause a dude was stalking the aisles for some reason.
The movie isn't incel wankerery. Joaquin did a really good job.
! He seemed to channel that weird interview he did years ago lol. I liked the one twist involving the girl. I disliked the 2 twists with Thomas Wayne. In general I didn't like how Wayne was portrayed. They made him a standard CEO corporate smug ass.
! I'm weirded out how Bruce was like a husk of a child. How are you gonna stand there and let some strange man put his fingers in your mouth?
The movie basically played like how I thought it would for this type of content. I think it would have been better if it wasn't tied to comic books. Cause you mentally go in trying to figure how certain characters go from point A to point B. It definitely wasn't a feel good movie. Which I guess is good? You don't really want a villain with a happy ending.
Overall the movie was fine. The acting was good, the music was well done and the cinematography was interesting.

Id'say this is likely the most honest review that I'll find out there, and it convinced me to go and watch it, after all, haven't visited theaters since EndGame.
I didn't like Joker. I mean, I didn't like anything at all in this movie. And I thought the film was too soft for a Joker movie. Also, this guy is too dumb to be the Joker. He is no match for Batman.
Batman's a kid here. Joker can go to school in the meantime.
I'm mean this Joker would be 50-pushing 60 by the point this Bruce starts out.
I'm mean this Joker would be 50-pushing 60 by the point this Bruce starts out.
I don't get why that doesn't bother people more.
Telltale's Batman game had a Riddler that was older than Batman so it's not really anything unusual. Unless you're simply used to most Batman stories having certain characters be a certain age or behave a certain way.
Yeah, I don´t see the problem with having an older Joker. I mean, he is not a character known for being a brawler, and most iterations of him know that they can´t go toe to toe against Batman, an expert martial artist in peak phisical condition. If a sequel does come out, I´ll be happy with them showing a Joker with a twisted sense of humor and some devious plans to srew Gotham´s elite.
Maybe it's because it's too easy? You think about a person who's really old, you kind of expect them to be cynical after a lifetime of shit and so obviously, boom, psycho supervillain. Having someone become that at a young age, especially from a very, very young age like when Bruce Wayne experiences his trauma that drives him to become Batman, makes a more appropriate mirror of the Dark Knight. At least, if you forego the whole 'falls into a vat of chemicals' backstory.
