DC Movies Thread - Shazam saves the day

A well-written Joker is awesome (see: Batman the Animated Series and The Dark Knight). A badly written Joker (see: Suicide Squad) is . . . . . sad.

The Dark Knight worked well, but even then all of the depictions of The Joker have been just plain boring throughout the various media. He's used too often and does the same exact thing. He's a closed book. He's establishment, ironically enough. His rules need to be broken and his character brought to the center more, especially considering the context of being a US comics character means little to no development or change.

I'll admit to being biased towards the Joker since it's just so entertaining to see him go, but there's always the angle of a person who's….just too far gone to change his ways.

A movie about Joker is to much joker. The character is great entertainment like a classic disney villain. But like a classic disney villain he is the type a character who depth take away from the enjoyment. It's not that it's bad. It just doesn't fit.

The Matt Reeves Batman movie will be a stand alone movie (new batman incoming)

The Joker origin movie is a stand alone movie(new actor incoming)

Joker and Harley Quinn is a DCEU movie (jared Leto returning)

Justice League 2 will probably have yet another new batman.

It's not announced yet, but it seems like it is only a matter of time before that happens, probably after Justice League comes out.

It's a shit show until they string together a couple good movies back to back. Why have the dceu then if you also go the stand-alone route? Just drop the universe and do good one offs/trilogy's and get same amount of money anyway if the movies are good. Not everything needs to be a universe nowadays.

Pretty much. They are trying to cash in on Marvel's success, but they really don't seem to have any kind of long-term planning going on and instead are just greenlighting random projects left and right.

Just watched Wonder Woman. Thought it was a little overrated. Villain sucked. Quite a lot of weird editing, and odd scenes where they focused on Gal Gadot's face without really giving a good reason for it, and that weird sword retrieval scene that looks like they chopped a scene out of the movie. CG was fairly bad too, you could basically see the greenscreen behind the characters at times.

Liked WonderWoman herself. Liked the main dude too. Side characters were underused. Ares was plain bad, doctor poison was underutilised.

Bah, not terrible as movie go, but I really expected more considering the reviews made it sound mindblowingly amazing.

I also finally watched WW, caught up on the DC cinematic universe now. I found it to be a very enjoyable film, easily the best of the DCCU, but still nowhere at the quality of the better Marvel films. My opinions of the characters were fairly similar to Afro's. I think the villain could have been better if his development wasn't entirely narrative exposition near the beginning of the film. Might have been better if he wasn't one offed and he instead lived to see more development in a sequel.
Still waiting for one of these films to blow me away, highly doubt it will be Justice League, currently pinning my hopes on a solo Flash or Aquaman movie.

Given Diana's belief that Ares was the cause of the war, I was honestly impressed when Diana killed Ludendorff without a giant, over-the-top boss battle, only to learn that there was not a big bad orchestrating the whole thing. 5 minutes later, however…not so much.

Ares himself would have been a great sequel hook though. Since the sequel is supposedly taking place decades later they could have easily changed Thewlis's appearance to suit the times.

To be fair, I think you can an interesting story and character depth out of a god hating their divine theme. Sort of like how Hades hated his job of ruling the Underworld in Disney's Hercules.

Poor Hades only got the underworld because Zeus and Poseidon got dibs on Heaven and the Ocean first. He doesn't have any particular attachment to it. It's also partly why he kidnapped Persephone; if he had tried to approach Demeter for her hand normally, Demeter probably would have rejected him because he's the ruler of the underworld. Doesn't excuse him for KIDNAPPING her, but everything has a reason.

It's what comes of being the youngest son.

They should have either done what he looks like in Injustice or just not give him a face after he takes off his 'human' appearance.

I thought Guy Ritchie really did a good job with that King Arthur film. More funny and energetic than anything I've seen out of Hollywood in a long while. He might just be able to save these DCU and MCU films, if he was ever given the shot

Oh no, I actually enjoy Guy Ritchie. Just hardly anybody sees his flicks anymore. Admittedly, I haven't seen King Arthur either.

I think his movies tend to be hot messes, but fun hot messes that I don't mind watching.

I liked man of steel, dislike bvs and suicide squad, like wonder woman. The new trailer while obviously filled with cgi, I mean it is Zack Synder, looks pretty fun, so I am cautiously optimistic. Just give me a fun ride that doesn't try it's best to make me angry and I will be happy.

In Comics I love the Justice League far over The Avengers…. So why does each trailer make me feel more and more jaded and wary about this movie.... I mean, it looks awful... just awful....

Yeah, the red shit looks dumb, and I didn't have hope for the movie in the first place, but my real question is

What the fuck is Aquaman doing there?

I won't shit on Aquaman, since I like the dude, but I feel like his limited skill set doesn't have much of a use in a battle against sky robots. This is exactly the situation in which Aquaman is least useful.

He has Telekenisis, Hydrokenesis, super strength (can lift up to 20 tons), bullet proof+ invulnerability, and jump-good. He's basically got all Wonder Woman's powers just with aquatic stuff instead of a lasso and bracelets.

Sure underwater he's got the control of sea creatures bit (ALL sealife mind you) and waterbending, so he's better there… but he's still superhuman on land. (Young Justice fixed it by making Aqualad a straight up waterbender who kept magic water on him at all times.)

Basically somewhere along the way some writer or another realized the implications to the fact that he can swim really fast and get into fistfights under 500+ atmospheres of pressure yet not explode when he comes up to sea level. WHich puts him almost in the same league of strength and durability as Superman.

This just isn't ever brought up because his being a complete joke in Superfriends has been impossible to shake culturally.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but that whole "A world without Superman is a world without hope" and "The world is still mourning Superman, especially Batman" stuff would work so much better if BvS would have had an actual resolution to the debate about if Superman is a savior or a threat to the world instead of just 'solving' the conflict by Batman realizing their mothers have the same damn name…ugh.

My love for Justice League comes from the cartoon, so it's hard for me to get super-excited about this Justice League without Green Arrow or Black Canary or Green Lantern.

Seriously. The easiest quick fixes to many(not all) of Superman's issues in this Universe would be to show us actually saving people and being a heroic figure. Most of the issues stem from us not seeing him be a symbol of hope. We've seen him save a few people so Snyder could slap Jesus symbolism on him, but never him genuinely saving and inspiring someone. Never stops to have a conversation and come off as the friendly guardian of the world.

Honestly the fear of Superman is pretty valid in the DCEU. I'd be pretty scared if Henry Cavil flew in, saved me from a fire, then just stared depressingly for a few minutes before leaving.

That makes more sense. Talking to water animals and whatnot. It's like he has telepathy and telekinesis ONLY with water involved.

Cavil's movies have been pretty boring in the respect that you don't really know anything about his character. What the heck does he do for fun, for example? If it were up to me I'd throw in a scene of him in full Superman suit playing games with kids at arcades. BAM, problem solved, movie worthy of an Oscar.
