@James:
SnK will surely get 3 or 4 covers next year as well when its anime comes up, can't wait for that one to hit the internet!
It is SnS, not SnK.

a mod whose only judgement of value in a series being whether they can make yaoi bait out of it (not that there's anything wrong with that BUT). It's all just a bit… dissatisfying if you're there for too long.
Wait, Sharkbait's a mod there?… oh, he is. Huh, I'm surprised. His posts are so obviously biased that a good chunk of the time I think that he's putting up an act.

I do wonder too. Though don't get me wrong, SB isn't terrible, he seems a more than okay guy, just…. with very narrow interests, and the sort of sureness of opinion that comes to so many comic fans.
Anyway, E-Robot's first chapter is out tomorrow, and despite how much the one-shot didn't work for me, early reception hints that it's actually pretty good, so that'll be nice. It won't win the Jump Start against Obata, almost by default, but three chapters of weird ecchi'll do nicely
It's unfair to face these rookies with Obata.. But then again, EWSJ might just have room for one more series.

Even ESJ has room, if it didn't do well in Japan, then there is pretty no meaning.

It's unfair because a lot of people will vote for the Obata series just because it's an Obata series. If that happens (which I think it will) then the other two might not continue in ESJ. If the Obata series gets cancelled and another series from this round turns out to be successful and continues in Japan we won't be getting it in ESJ, because most people voted for the Obata series. Anyways, we won't know until all 3 chapters of these 3 series are published.

Not really. Even after the two successes in a row (Hikaru no Go and Death Note), Obata experienced cancellation on Ral Grad (series serialized after DN). Furthermore, other popular authors, like Watsuki, Fujisaki, and Kawashita, experienced got axed after their major success. So, even though they are well-known author, if their next serialization isn't good, then the readers will not vote for it.
Why didn't EWSJ bring over Boku no Hero? I haven't read it yet, but is it too "Japanese", or risque for Western audiences? Or did EWSJ just skip it in the JumpStart?

Sometime, they tend to serialized later for some popular series, like Souma got serialize like almost 2 years after its serialization. But, ESJ will serialize BnHA in future since they are serializing One Punch-man (same genre as BnHA).
The jump start initiative just started the batch after My hero academia round.
Based on looking at past series from ESJ, I think they tend to serialize the axed serialize like almost immediately and they take time for confirmed popular series. So, if the new series begin to serialize in ESJ within few weeks from now on, then I think that is indication that series will be axed in future.

Yes, I first encountered him at NeoGaf where he goes by the alias "dedication through light" and where lots of people have assumed he is just trolling. Although, I think most of the people who left MangaHelpers did so because of Kaiten who is no longer a mod there.

i'm pretty sure they mean votes in the jump start initiative, not generally within WSJ

How is it unfair? The only thing Obata might be better than others is drawing skills since he isn't an author but an illustrator. Just because he's drawing a manga doesn't make said manga good, it depends on the author who is writing the manga.

You are seriously underestimating the power of both art and fame.

western comics readers tend to be pretty… uh... fannish? Like militantly so. If there's a name they recognise from a beloved work they've experienced then they're all over that shit, blind as can be.
Not to say anything about this new comic itself, just a pretty blatant observation on how it'll go down with Int'l Jump
Besides, it's against a ping pong manga (while it's kind of funny, that alone can't carry the series) and moe bait (that migth get popular, but I doubt that western audiences would enjoy it openly)

W're talking about ESJ here. Readers get to vote on which Jump Start series they want to stay. Do you have any idea how a lot of people react to Obata? Some people are already saying it's going to be a good series just because of Obata. Many will vote for it to stay in ESJ because of Obata, even if it doesn't do well in Japan.
And Viz had a huge promotion of Obata's works leading up to NYCC where they had a special panel just for him.
Yeah, that probably helps
Robby judges series based on yaoi bait?
Er… what?
Robby doesn't mod this thread.
Nope. It doesn't really need modding. I skim it pretty regularly though.
E-Robot was what I expected, which isn't good. I don't see that one surviving. At least not in WSJ.
Ageha is slightly above average. I'll wait to see a match against one of the 13 before making a definitive judgment.
Obata's mystery manga is coming next. Since it's the one that will most likely stays in the ESJ, I hope the writer makes an interesting story worth the hype the mangaka will get thanks to his partner's fame.
I hope that like last time, we will get a surprise 4th title. Maybe a title from Jump+ or maybe they could use this campaign to test MHA.
I almost feel bad for E-Robot; it has no chance in ESJ with series like Ageha and Obata's new work. It might have a chance in Japan, and I'm sure a scanlation group will pick this up.
If they aren't going to keep the girl from the ping pong manga be a total bitch, then I'm not that interested, the humor curve went waaaay down this week.
Hi Fi cluster predictable plottwist was predictable.
Getting to the right mindset to read E-Robot.
Given the mixed reception so far in the comments at ESJ, I feel like E-Robot's concept makes it practically dead in the water on our side in just about any round. Don't even have to take into account Obata's name value here, although that just makes the difference even more stark.

It saddens me so much not being able to get past chapter 2 of Academia. I WANT to like it! I really do! But it puts me off in every single way conceivable.
A real shame.
No bleach at the bottom? Has to be fake, lol
Wait, it has a color page this week doesn't it?^^

Yep, Bleach has a Color page!
Well, let's see how colorful it will actually be.
Based on looking at Shoseki Ranking, it looks like the volume 1 of Boku no Hera Academia is having similar phenomenon as the volume 1 of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu.
The volume jumped from 152th(I believe that was before the reprint) to 16th then to 12th and then to 6th.
That is really cool, hoping for amazing sales again!

It is having higher increase than NnT (which is having an anime effect).

Man, WT is jumpy as ever. ^^;
Glad to see BokuHero at first place!
Looks like Horikoshi finally got a manga that will stay around for many years to come! :3

Awww, it's okay. Have heard from a couple other people that they somehow can't like Bokuhero either. Maybe in a couple months that might change you suddenly start to like it. LIke it getting an anime in a year or two and it being so good that you can marathon the whole manga and like doing so.
And honestly, while I like BokuHero very much and can see why it is so good for many readers and am happy for Horikoshi's success, it is not one of my favorites. But it is a good manga I enjoy to read.^^

Dayum! That's awesome! The sales must be HUGE then! BokuHero volume 1 wasn't seen last week's oricon due the reprint but if it got that high then it surely must have sold a lot of volumes in this week. 8D
I don't see how someone wouldn't like deku after the trainin, he's got a dream then the montage, he works himself to death to get to the starting point. He wants this.
It seems that the anime is starting to have some effect on WT sales. As with the manga, it began when it reached the Miwa fight.
Nothing big so far (all the volumes just climbed back to around 150th on the daily ranking) but it's a start. I'm kinda confident that the effect will continue and become bigger with the following arcs.
Why is it a shame to not like something ?
Because I like Horikoshi (well, I liked Oumagadoki), he's a good artist, tons of people are enjoying it, Gliblord is translating it, it seems he FINALLY is enjoying success after flopping hard two times. . .and I can't enjoy it.
I do find it a shame.

I don't know, everything seems off to me. Maybe it's the appeal of the manga? The designs are not goofy or quirky, they are hideous, the body and facial language is wrong and off-puting. . .I don't know. It also seems like a mess overall, and it seems to tread all the common places.
Again, hell, can't get past the second chapter, gonna man up and try to do it, but so far I feel absolutely nothing for anyone, specially the main character.

It pretty much takes off after the initial chapters
The next chapters wont be better if he didn’t like the first two in my opinion.
And i don’t see how the art is that different from his previous titles. Especially compared with Crazy Zoo.
Idk I felt similarly in the first few chapters too, but I feel like it's coming into its groove pretty well

It's infinitely better designed. Both Zoo and Barrage had ridiculously over-designed characters. The lines are also a little more… consistent? It reads better, with much stronger conveyance.
I also found BnHA's art to be quite …'jarring' for the first few chapters,(that moment with him wishing his mother encouraged him was pretty odd looking and the way he cried iirc) but it does go away afterwards. Just wait until he's in school, and some of the crazy exaggerated stuff goes away. Once he's in school, the students are pretty "normal" looking.
Q's cover is so…80s.

But it's not just the exaggerated designs that put me off. Zoo had some of my favorite designs (Orca Mafia Guy and Whale Asshole Guy are IMPRESSIVE no matter how you look at them), and as exceedingly vanilla and uninspired as Barrage was, the designs were mostly good. Oda also goes for the overblown designs plenty of times, and I find myself liking those designs most of the time, so it must be something else.
That superman guy. . .in both of his forms (super-hero and normal), is the most hideous thing I've seen in a comic book in a long time. Again, that might be the point. . .but it's freaking atrocious looking. That's not a face, that's like. . .two or three tumors put togheter.
As for the facial expresions and the like. . .Again, Oda also does the super crying faces plenty of times, but Hero's main character doing the crying face just makes me want to punch him repeatedly in the face.
I think All Might was meant to be an caricature of the way Classic Superheros were drawn.
But I really do understand how it can grate on you.
Or at least, I don't like the certain kind of "hatching" used on All Might.
You can try! Go for 5 chapters!
Here is my comment about the first chapter of E-Robot. It was much easier to read as compared to the one shot, but the downside is that it decreased it's perverted-ness. I, personally, liked the straight ecchi and pervert stuff in the one shot, so that was disappointment.
For Takujou no Ageha, nothing really happened in the second chapter, so I think the author should move on the story immediately, like Ageha makes ping-pong club in school or introduce another one of 13 disciples.
See… Zoo had way more exaggerated designs, and there's so much wrong with Barrage's designs that it beggars belief, so I'm not sure how something, like, intrinsically tamer in its design philosophy could bother you more than what's came before.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not evangelising, or trying to get you to read it at all. It's just... It seems a weird tack to take, considering the frankly abortive designs from his previous two series. But then this is where subjectivity comes in, innit. what works for one might not work for another, et cetera et cetera.
