Over 90% of those 1 year or 2 years blocks are failed series, the rest are series like Sandland that were meant to be short.
The core excercise is futile, there are too many variables to consider, but One Piece wasn't a fluke, it was meant to last.
It's easy to think that SOME of the early cancelations would have gotten a reprieve in certain years, near the end of Death Note serious series would have had a free pass, during the end of Slam Dunk sport series would be a little easier to break in, but unless someone proceses 50 years of data (I'm currently missing 2000 to 2002), or there's a super biography of the editors in chieff talking about these kind of things, we'll never know.

Random aside: Seeing Jigoku Sensei Nube in that random old ToC listed reminded me that I started watching it years ago, but the fansubs at the time only got to like ep 8 or 9… then I go and check anidb, and holy shit, it's fully fansubbed as of last year. I must go pick it up.

No, in America you start young too. Its just that, without a huge stroke of luck, (Like say, landing a gig on X-Men or Spiderman, or getting paired with an already popular artist/writer where people take notice of you immediately) it takes a looooong time to get momentum and build a name. Consider that anyone who was a founder at image has been doing it for more than 20 years… closer to 30. Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and Peter David have been doing it decades. Robert Kirkman's success on Invincible and Walking Dead took ten years to build, and he was doing comics for years and years before that. I've been a published pro for almost fourteen years and no one has any idea who I am. Stan Sakai, Fred Perry and Eric Larsen are all at around issue 200 of their series (Usagi, Gold Digger, Savage Dragon) and that takes 20 years to do.
Also, in manga the creators are generally both artist and writer and pumping out product weekly, as opposed to random teams in america which is... more mixed up and harder to develop a following. (Though more prolific writers work on multiple books a month)
The difference is, the entire medium is treated differently. Jump is read by millions, and anything that runs for two years is likely to get an anime. American comics... are read by thousands and only the best known characters get shows. (Batman gets a new cartoon as soon as one ends, but Superman is hard pressed to get one, and Flash and Wonder Woman never will... and those are the BIG names!)
So... its not so much everyone in american comics is old... as much as it is the people you actually know about that have talent are.

Slam Dunk should have gone far longer…but Inoue chose to move to Vagabond(a classic work though)...Kenshin too reached it's climax early(Shishio should have been hold on to be introduced after 300 chapters at least).Watsuki ended the manga before that instead and went to write a crap next.........

you start young, but you don't tend to be young when you're in the big sellers or debut for the big two. my comparison is that Jump's system is comparable to if someone's first work was with marvel, or if they worked with DC before they were 20. Because of the anthology format, newbies get to debut alongside the biggest guns in million-selling mags. Although… the lack of a shared universe does mean it's a poor comparison, so maybe Image would be a fairer one, and your point'd hold a lot more water with me. But I totally get what you're getting at.
Also I do get the differences between the western and eastern markets, dude. I'm firmly entrenched in both, for better or worse. Which, uh... actually means I'm kinda aware of who you are,though I don't dabble in Antarctic Press stuff myself.

HJ will probably be cancelled but it has a good premise, problem is it's too rushed and sacrifices storytelling for action. It shows how people who hate chapters without action don't understand that too much action is more dangerous to a series than too little. HJ can survive a few more chapters on good fights but if it wants to survive past 15 or 20 chapters it needs to do more world expanding and exploring. I just hate when series with good premises and interesting characters are wasted, I think the author is good but my guess is the pressure to jump into SJ and do well can make for shoddy story telling. It's really either jump in and grab attention immediately or delicately build support and hope it works in time to hook an audience before you're dropped.

I'm surprised there aren't any scanlation groups doing Saiki Kusuo faster than a snail's pace. It sounds like its really good.
It really is. Latest chapters have been amazeballs.
Anyway, I love how colour pages and unranked titles keep making it look like Haikyuu and Nisekoi are lower than they are. Other than that gripe, boo poor kiruko and… Medaka actually deserves to rise a bunch right now. didn't think I'd be saying that earlier in this arc.

It's pretty cool, basically imagine Assassination Classroom meets Sket Dance.
It's a highschool comedy (and occasional heart-warmer) with a protagonist so powerful in level of godhood. He can literally go toe-to-toe with Koro-sensei.
He wants to keep a low profile as an average highschooler, but ends up helping others in need.
AAAHHH. Saiki Kusuo!! So that's the guy Koro-sensei met during the school trip. Seems interesting, although, at a first glance, the art doesn't seem like anything special. But I guess I'll give it a try

It also mentions why those four series aren't in USA Jump (censorship or translation issues). Hopefully there's some form of English release down the line… maybe.

It was terrible in almost every way, the only chapter well done was 16 that featured the metal-blades girl.
It was structured from start to finish ideally for a weekly manga.
Everything else sucked balls.

Calling HJ rushed is an understatement. It has been less than 20 chapters and they pretty much already introduced the "Shicibukia' of the serie where one got his ass kicked and the other is pretty much erased from the story. Talk about disappointing…
At least the science thing is something relatively new. WT offers absolutely NOTHING new in contrast. Oh well...both HJ and Kiruko will be gone before WT and Edison takes its place.
Btw, although I just like trashed the hell out of HJ, I still enjoy it more than Date and Edison.

It doesn't help that HJ's protagonist is captain boring face…with his accomplice, useless girl with glasses. And a new friend, mister boring face with internal monologue.
I wish they went with the original idea for HJ's protagonist: crazy guy with a disease.

Can you explain this to me? I don't know if you like or dislike D. Gray-Man but regardless it was a Manga that managed to survive in WSJ and become quite popular. Creating a similar atmosphere to a popular Manga is certainly not a bad thing. If a manga comes along that feels like One Piece or other Manga I “love” I would certainly be delighted and enjoy them.
I loved D. Gray-Man right up till till the arc after that kid with the ball in his head or whatnot. I still like it now. But for Hungry Joker to feel like D. Gray-Man is a death knell, as it's A) not enough like it to be good, and 2) is just about enough like it to feel like it's just trying to ape that title instead of be its own thing.
I mean heck, the metal girl did a flying rolling kick thing to take out an akuma(NO NOT AKUMA) in a manner so similar to Lenalee that it's just shameful, and the eurekas may as well be called innocence at this point.
But that's an actual charge of plagiarism, let's get back to feel. A series should feel like its own. It can evoke a similar feeling to how you feel reading another title, but it shouldn't feel like it's trying to be that title. HJ is the latter and that sucks, because it could have been so much more.
Gun Blaze West felt a bit like this as well, trying to ape the feel of One Piece, and died for that too, as another example
This week's one-shot Kokkuri Yaai is obviously fictional.
Not becuase of mystic fox-spirits, or inhumanly strong protagonist, or spells and curses.
Because in that world, Hunter x Hunter is actually running on Jump.
It depresses me how much just reading that made me laugh. Can't wait to actually get my hands on the issue and check it out.
