It has seen increasingly higher rankings the last half year, so this could mean that they have increased their fanbase and you sell more when your increasing fanbase is catching up.
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

Like. A. Boss.
That is a realy kick-ass publicity.
I look forward to seeing hxh shoot up again in rankings when Togashi finishes levelling up o whatever rpg he is currently playing. If only he played beat em ups, like offline I mean, and with no friends or ranking systems. That way even if he chose to finish them on hardest with every character it would take him less time than an rpg might.
Dragon Quest X was recently released, and a remake of VII is coming in February. It's going to be a long time before Togashi comes back.
Is this talk about Togashi not working because of videogames true?
This guy needs help.
I know but I still find it very awkward.
Well, you can see it like this. Shonen Jump is highly popular and targeted mostly towards children, who buy the magazine every week, and then rate their favorite series. And then we have the volumes, who's sales sees an increase of older people buying them. So Kuroko but be popular with older folk, who don't read the Weekly magazine, but wait for each volume. I may be wrong, but that's the only explanation I can give.

That is the case with One Piece. Not that it isn't popular in the rankings, but it sells a billion volumes because of older people. I might be wrong, but I wouldn't say that's the case with Kuroko, since it's a little too childish most of the times. That second place is probably because the start of the anime made all 20 volumes sell a whole lot.
Lol if I were married to Naoko Takeuchi I would rather spend my time shagging her than playing rpgs haha
Didn't One Piece and Naruto release 3 volumes each this year while Kuroko's Basketball released 5 volumes?
Don't know about the others but One Piece had 4 volumes this year (65 to 68)
HxH make it in the top 10 with… One volume (30) published during this period... !
Kuroko sells because fujoshi strong

I see..Based off this new list it must be the anime that increased the sales for it. People went back to buy the old volumes.

Prety much what I assumed before that even came up. Its easier to boost the sales of a series by getting people to buy the backlog of series than just buying new volumes because 10 people buying 15 volumes each is more volumes sold than 30 people buying 4 volumes each. Stuff like this is a temporary boost that will fade away. It's the same as how One Piece has fell so much in total sales because it's backlog sold in huge quantities around the strong world period. the top 100 individual volumes is far more important in judging the strength of a series because those numbers are more indicative of long term trends
How exactly is Kuroko's Basketball so high when it barely makes in the top 5 rankings in WSJ?
Is this an invalid number?
I would expected Toriko to be in that spot.
Kuroko has a strong core fanbase of female fandom. (not all fujoshi, but high percentage)
They are a large consumer base, but they aren't a majority of WSJ readership that participates in polls.
There are very involved core-fans that religiously send in those polls, but the overall number is still just minority compared to millions of boys.
But volume purchase is different, adults and core-fans tend to cast their support by buying the books, unlike say, a 10 year old boy.
BTW, the saftey-net of sales that you can discount polls entirely is 500k initial print per volume.
If Bleach dips like 10~20% lower than it is now, then it WILL actually start to be subjected to poll counts.
Man, it dipped faster than I expected.
As for Magi…. 2012 sales > total of all Magi sales previous to 2012.
Anime boost FOR THE WIN.
@No:
It saddens me that something as derivative and soulless as Fairy Tail gets these sorts of numbers even in Japan
I guarantee you that fan service plays a BIG part in the series' sales.
I imagine this board with it's near-unanimous love of Magi is all quite happy
It eludes me why Kuroko's Basketball is so popular. I've never read it so I can't really comment on that, though.
I freaking love Magi, I saw the first episode and saw there was a manga, got hooked, I spent a day reading every chapter, one of my favourite series to read rigth now, its good to see it do well.
^Huh again,I could have sworn that it was 9 million.
^Huh again,I could have sworn that it was 9 million.
funny enough it was one piece that had a huge slump, but still is the most popular manga in japan.

OP in 2011 = 37,996,373
OP in 2012 = 23,464,866
I predict OP will have a better year with movie Z and punk hazard
If you look at the new volumes of each year, One Piece averaged only 50,000 less, which considering these numbers are most likely estimates based on statistical methods, might even be within the margin of error considering how much One Piece sells. The vast majority of the difference is because the backlog is selling less, not what's coming out ow
OMG!!! I can´t wait to see that Color Spread (even if there´s no Film Z chapter XD).
I have seen it. It is Epic.
I have seen it. It is Epic.
Why don't you just rub it in our faces more Mr Official Translator
Stephen is such a bad guy…
Why does he do this?
The Z spread is in the next chapter, yes?
Yes, it will be in the next chapter.
is it the same with the one in the seven eleven OP Z commercial video?
Probably should refrain from asking those details, bro.
Unlike us, Shuueisha's interest for an unpublished material comes in play here.
owh.. okay.. i am sorry.

Hm interesting, Naruto and Bleach jumped right back up, but Date and Cross Manage and stuck at the bottom. Do you suppose either of the might get axed?
I hope Kiruko-san remains that high once it actually enters the rankings…

Both to be honest.
If Kurogane manages to suck even harder, one of them will be spared.
Or they manage to get some votes and HJ drops dead as soon as the 8 weeks is up.
Wow, am shocked that Bleach got back to the top kind of. Naruto goes back and fourthXD
Have Naruto and Gintama swap places and this TOC is perfect. So glad both Nisekoi and AssClass continue to shine week after week like this. I'm just hoping the former won't get overly dragged out in the hopes of WSJ getting more popular with young female readers by running a slightly longer romance storyline.
success of nisekoi amaze me…..
kagami-no-kuni was of same mold, yet it was thrashed by public....ST&RS had so much potential but readers rejected it even before the story settled.....
getting public fancy seem to be lottery these days....
stephen, you were so not shitting when you modestly called the spread, "Epic".
Nice, next week's Kochikame is on manga industry info.
I love how informative Kochikame is on any subject, so it covering manga is a welcome. The number of manga tankoubon (collected volumes) published annually is around 12000, bringing montly releases to about 1000 titles per month.
I did not know this figure, learn something every day.
by tankoben you mean all the volumes(should be 150+) of past 35 years…??!!
New JUS?!!
I wonder if it will be for 3ds
by tankoben you mean all the volumes(should be 150+) of past 35 years…??!!
No, no. New tankoubon (volumes) of manga published in Japan every year is 12000.
So there's around 1000 new manga volumes hitting the shelves in Japan every month.
That's counting everything of course. The main shounen/shoujo/seinen of course, as well as comic essays, 4-komas, adult, anthologies, etc, etc.
That's why it's laughable whenever someone claims he's seen it all, and read everything out there.
No one is capable of such feat. Hell, the number of currently ongoing manga magazines alone is over 330.
When Toriko smiles like that he seems like a tremendous perv.
Oh man Jump Ultimate Stars with Toriko sounds great. Maybe there will be failed jump characters like Bulge and SWOT guy too.
I would desperately love a new Jump Stars game, but the fact that the 3DS is region-locked kills my potential enthusiasm.
also, it's possible this will be a Battle Stadium D.O.N.-style game, and only use those three series, in which case I don't really mind missing out.
but what I really would like would be a shonen jump fighting game that plays like Marvel vs Capcom. Jump vs Capcom, Marvel vs Jump, Jump vs Itself, I don't care. I just want to wreck shit with Luffy and Bo-bobo in a traditional fighter.
I would love a Marvel vs Jump / Dragon Ball. That would be so awesome.

oh!ok..i misunderstood…..still considering the monetary value of the industry it is understandable that so many new mangas are coming out every year....
what is the average yearly sell of Kochikame...??..it is running freaking 35 years non stop......to be kept running so long.....!!
@Cyclone: he certainly does lol. Zebra probs has the biggest cock of them all, and his grin seems a lot more rapey.
And Jump Ultimate Stars is my favourite game. Shame I don't have my r4 with it on anymore.
Continuing on the Kuroko blackmail case, even Comiket announced cancellation of all Kuroko related stuff.
Over 900 doujin circles planning of releasing Kuroko related doujin and goods cancelled attending the event.
Comic Market is the biggest comic event in Japan, with over half a million attenders each festival.
They can't afford to endanger attenders of such a large event.
Reminds me of that one time when some nutcase tried to flame moletov in comiket years ago…
Actually, while we're on the subject, I've been wondering whether I should give it a chance or not. Is the series any good?
I've fallen a bit behind in Kuroko, and I don't remember it getting much love from AP, but… if you're into sport series, you'd probably enjoy it.
It's at least worth checking out and judging for yourself if you're a fan of the genre, anyway.
