I notice in later episodes/chapters, the crew is referred to as the Straw Hat Pirates, but during early episodesand what not, they seem to be called the Luffy Pirates (The official uncut DVDs go with this too)
So my question is: When exactly does the term "Straw Hat Pirates" come up? I seem to have missed the transition.

I never noticed it to be honest. I always thought they were called the Mugiwara.
But at a guess I'd imagine it would be when Luffy got his bounty early on. Smoker began to call them the Strawhat pirates.

This , Like Red Haired Shanks and his crew are called the Red Haired Pirates , but not every one has red hair.
Luffy being the captain and most known for his Straw Hat so they identify them as the Straw Hat pirates.
