They just recently opened a Barns and Noble where i live so i stopped ny to check it out and see if they had any OP. Little did i know that they had the first 53 volumes, movie 8, and some cool merch in store for me. Not only that, but the display was at the very front of the store and people were crowding it. I was shocked and almost to the point of tears. OP is getting more popular in America. :D Btw to support the cause i bought volumes 1-3 and my brother bought volume 42 (my favorite one).

the last time I was in a Barnes and Nobles, a little kid picked up a OP volume among the other titles he had, and walked off to go buy it… I was so happy to see that ;_;

I'd like to see these displays I keep hearing about. There's only one at the boarders near me and it's for Naruto. I should visit the Barns and Noble near me and see if they have one (never been there before).

AP is pretty decent when it comes to intelligence, and most people are older than 16 here from what I've seen.

Personally I think OP's popularity is fine right now, maybe a tiny bit more would be neat but no more than that. Imagine the fandom being flooded by 12 year old fangirls with their Nami and Robin recolor Mary Sues and fanboys filling up Youtube with One Piece AMVs made with Linkin Park songs.

Funny to see that this thread was made not too long ago. I just got back from Target and bought an anime magazine that had One Piece on the cover. I was really surprised to see that.

Last time I went to my nearby Borders, I saw a display for One Piece as well. Except all they displayed were the graphic novels, no movie 8 or anything else. Still, it was great to see that it took place of where the Naruto display use to be.

I don't mind if One Piece got more popular in the U.S., I actually like how it is right now. It's not too popular, so we don't have annoying fanboys (which has sadly become the result of Naruto), and it's an even better feeling when I find someone who is a fan of One Piece. It feels pretty rare, so it makes One Piece feel like a little gem that can provide a common link with almost any stranger I meet and knows about it.

I am so glad that Viz decided to do a One Piece Volume speed up and release all 53 volumes in english. Tears Red Spear, I Promise I'll upload the pictures later, but for now my One Piece English Volumes that I bought from Barnes & Nobles are: 2-5, 7-11, 14, 17-23, 26-33, 36-44, 46-50, and 53. For the Japanese Volumes I have 53-56.

However, even a few years back (when I was in high school), One Piece was actually quite popular. Pretty much everyone I knew liked it. But then again, most of my friends were geeks.

We in the UK seem to be up to around vol 54 or so I think. (At least according to Amazon.) and aside from some rare W7 and Torch keyrings (Never ever saw Nami or Chopper from that latter set.) back in the day we never got anything since. Lame.

This topic did remind me that I need to get rid of the last few Viz volumes and upgrade to the Japanese ones. It's cheaper (I get two Japanese volumes + shipping for less than the price of 1 US one.) and I support them still.

Big deal. For one, "Teach" wasn't even romanized. It's not like the other words have different meanings and they don't deduct from the story. I agree "ponegliff" is a weird spelling but it's really not anything worth complaining about. About "Kami," I'm willing to give Viz the benefit of the doubt on that one, and they explained that Kami means "God," so…

Also. Interestingly I found this on wikipedia:

'translating "kami" exclusively as "god" or "deity" would be a gross mischaracterization'

Kami may, at its root, simply mean "spirit", or an aspect of spirituality

It's the August 2010 issue of the Otaku USA magazine. I don't read that magazine much, and I haven't even read this one yet (too tired as of now, yet I'm on a forum ), but it looks alright.

I don't mind the Viz translation at all. And if I'm wrong about something, AP is always here to tell me differently.

In the end, it's still One Piece. It's not like they take out a whole character or chapter or arc. THEN it just wouldn't be the same (4kids, how dare you cut out a few arcs!).

Well, your loss. Unless you know Japanese fluently I don't see how buying the Japanese ones can benefit you in any way. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Viz show MORE of the picture by zooming out on the covers? The Japanese covers actually has some of the sides cropped off.

And sometimes the picture is already "obscured" to begin with even on the Japanese covers, like the logo covering parts of it.

And nope. Don't read japanese. I read the translations online. Just as good/better half the time. I support them and I support Oda by buying from Japan.

No problem with Nakama. I OWN the Japanese volumes so scan quality is of NO issue. Only for colourspreads which you need the colour walk for anyways.

Attack/Term translations are there 90% of the time anyways. I never remember the names anyways. I just look at the pictures.

I seen the displays too at both barnes and nobles I've been. My friend saw some one piece notebooks at his local borders too. I cant complain bout viz, actually i love them. its in coherent English, yea its got stuff like kami and stuff but thats everywhere in the world of manga. I'm sure if another company was doing it we would still complain. It's not like there isnt stuff to complain about in the japanese volumes. I mean what was up with that misprint with all the panels zoomed in/out on the last volume and they released new ones.

I have one japanese volume I bought because I wanted to see what they were like, but I dont understand it so its just in my shelf looking uneven with the rest of my volumes. I dont like watching subs if they are dubbed on the dvds too coz well fuck it all sounds like gibberish and all the voices the same to me. yea watever.

anyways I like the way One Piece is going right now, both Viz and Funi are doing great and making One Piece bigger and bigger in America :D

I read the article in Otaku USA this morning, and it was rather short from what I was expecting. It pretty much just said how One Piece has been speeding up recently with the Viz volumes and Funi DVDs, and just said why One Piece was so awesome.

Good article for the public to see. Kinda wish they didn't have Robin in the group pictures, because my friends who have yet to reach the end of the Alabasta arc are for sure going to be "Whoa, why's she with them?!".

I use to turn Monthly Shonen Jumps with Naruto on the cover backwards so the ad was facing front. Now that OP is getting more and more covers on them I actually spread them out on the store shelve. Sometimes I even open them if they lack the wrap and display a nice spread from a chapter. Yes, I am sad.

Sniperking I can live with (I prefer Sogeking, though), but Zolo still kind of bothers me. It appears like a symbol of the 4Kids era, which I still don't get why Viz has yet to switch back to Zoro.

Back with the Sogeking remark, I'm disappointed that they didn't keep some Japanese words in the manga, like, say, Nakama. If they did, it would feel as if we're learning a little bit of Japanese and it would feel like a nice fusion between Japanese manga & english translations.

What's worse is Viz is hit and miss on their titles. Some of them they'll keep the japanese words, puns, traditions and explain them in the back. Others like, OP and Boys over Flowers they'll ignore it and change it/attempt to translate it right then.

I haven't been to a bookstore since the local WaldenBooks had their going-out-of-business sale…there's still Books-A-Million, but they hardly ever restock and there's no Barnes & Noble here. :P
I do try and buy them when I have the money, to support the series. Plus, the translation isn't terrible and it's nice to flip through them every once and a while.
Plus, if you get enough volumes, you can stack them on the floor next to your chair, put your dinner plate on top, and watch musicals on Youtube while you eat.
…just kidding, I would never do that even if I had that many.

But seriously though. I don't really see much of a need to keep words like nakama when it could easily be translated into something "readable". But I'm not going to bother going into that. The dabates over such things are pretty ridiculous.

It's not really the same. Sogeki means sniper while king is king. It's sort of a fused word which is why there's so many people complaining about it. I'm all for translating it since it doesn't really take away from anything.

And they shouldn't have had that in there. If it's a manga with a strong tie to Japan like, lets say Rurouni Kenshin, then whatever, keep some words in Japanese. But One Piece doesn't take place in Japan and doesn't even exude Japanese hardly at all so there's really no reason not to translate.

Well, I'm glad OP is getting more play in the USA, but I kind of like that there isn't a rabid fanbase here. I remember back in the day there were only a few titles out and if you didn't know Ranma people looked at you like you had 3 heads. Natural progression is now it's Naruto, but One Piece… Damn, I kind of wanted to keep it for myself. Glad it's getting more popular, but... damn.

As for translation... whatever. I always collect the Japanese, even though I'm pretty rusty at this point. I just like keeping the character's 'voice' the same, not translated into some odd accent. Just me. If you only know english, then you can buy the english version. Though someone earlier mentioned that the anime in japanese all sounds the same, which is a crying shame because the voice acting is so damn good.
