I didn't think anyone on here really followed YGO, but since the 5D's thread seems active enough, I thought I would see if I could replenish any old interest in the past series of this long running franchise.

Moreso, because recently proper subtitles have begun emerging. I myself am subbing Duel Monsters with my team. I will post links to Youtube pages you can find these series on.

I'm hoping I can stir up a little discussion on the original Japanese versions for anyone who has never seen them.

Oh, sorry if there was threads for these, but they have to be like ancient history if I couldn't find them past 20 pages. May as well start fresh.

Well, truth be told, season one is the worst the series has to offer. Just bear with it until after episode 49, when things start to slowly get better and better. Not saying that Duelist Kingdom doesn't have good things to offer though. Pegasus is one of the best villains in the series, coming right after Malik and Bakura.

Loved the Yubel Arc in GX, but everything else was trash.

Well, I can't say anything for DM because I loved it all as much as 5D's, but I think you will like 5D's a lot more than GX.

It's much better though if you see all the episodes. It's not perfect, but I'm enjoying it as I sub it. I'll be uploading the first quarter of it in the near future, so give it a try.

Not sure) and watching Yu-Gi-Oh on the TV everyday, there was one time where Pegasus was facing him with an undefeated monster with an eye in the middle or something, and the guy was awesome and crap, and then Yugi used a bunch of fuzz balls to somehow enter the monster and explode with him
At the time, I thought that was AWESOME, I was in love :wub:

But then I matured to hip-hop music and metal

I'm still very early in the Anime ATM, I think Yugi has just beaten the Insect Guy
The games are still primitive here, not many spells, only monsters after monsters, but its still a pretty good show, albeit restrained, what with its purpose of wanting to sell cards lol

It was the same for me. Hell, most things I enjoyed as a kid I frown on now (like Pokemon, simply because of the rehashed plot) but YGO keeps my interest even now. The Japanese, while still not perfect, is much better than the dub 4Kids had us watching as a kid. You'll find much more mature themes in this series, and it's actually quite intelligent when you get past the basic concept of people living their lives for a card game.

He washed away non-existent poison with a card, among many others, that he new drew again in the entire series.

Just ridiculous. Hilarious, but ridiculous.

That changes attack with defense, its a pretty good card, I remember having a deck with it and using that big block monster and that elf girl to change defense with attack to own everyone.
What I'm talking about is one that literally switches a monster with another

Well, DK makes no sense at all when you think about it. The only Duels that really made any sort of sense was the Yugi/Kaiba Duel and the final matches, but even they had some wacky stuff going on.

I think it was the "Switch" card, called "Monster Replace" in the anime. The effect in the card game is completely different. I actually own that card in my old collection, I believe.

Evil Bakura and Seto Kaiba are pretty much the two characters that make the anime. Both Mariks and Pegasus are pretty cool, too.

Haha, I have to agree. Filler in YGO is way better than Naruto or Bleach.

Well, GX had some stupid filler, but overall most of them weren't too bad.

Well, everything after Duelist Kingdom, DDM aside, was all filler. Rebeca and Professor Hopkins were only originally tiny sketches in a picture Sugoroku in the manga, so they are also filler characters. The Noah arc is filler. Noah never existed in the manga. Doma and KC Grand Prix are also all filler. None of those characters were in the original manga.

I still like all the filler characters though.

That was the point. There was so much filler, it ceased to be filler and became part of the story.

The filler was very good, particularly the "Orichalcos" arc. We got to see things that really upset the balance of the game in an interesting way, presenting challenges both in game and outside of it (moral) that allowed for development of the characters. Rafael and Allister (the guy who disguised as Pegasus) were excellent minions, as that guy who used the Orichalcos on Obelisk was pretty awesome too. The great battle with Dartz was epic with a satisfying end, despite the whole arc being dark and tempting.

For me, YGO filler was like watching One Piece Movie #6 or the 2009 Star Trek movie - outsiders taking an established franchise and actually going somewhere with it. At bare minimum, the battles were interesting and side characters got time to show off what they were made of, something the Noah Arc at least managed to do despite it being oddly placed in the middle of the Battle City finale (and not involving Yami Malik interacting at all with the Kaibacorp Five, that was not cool). Some events like the first time Yugi & Co went into the digital world (where we saw the Princess Mokuba) were pretty entertaining too.

Now, a lot of what happened in the last season with Siegfried and the Grand Prix prior to the major ancient Egypt flashback is a bit of a blur for me, I never got to watch it all and didn't even find out about Zorc until long after the series ended, though I went some ways into the flashback. But I can attest that the filler until this last arc was very, very good.

I have to agree with all you said. Though I found the Noah arc, while definitely strangely placed in the first half, really fit in well with Battle City in the end. Seeing what a douche Gozaburo was firsthand really helped to set the tone in Alcatraz to further understand Kaiba's motives.

Yes, the robot monkey was probably the best thing to happen to him in the Noah arc. I mean, it gave off so many wrong vibes, like Honda rubbing his monkey face into Shizuka's "soft as candy floss" boobies, or when Anzu whips him into shape, telling him to "stay right here by my feet." I found it all pretty humorous.

Noah was a good villain. I would have liked to see him have a better interaction with Yami Malik at some point other than through the computer monitor, but YM wiggling his tongue in the last episodes and blowing shit up randomly made up for it.

I was translating Duel Monsters for a fansub group for a while a while back and they never finished anything. Mostly because the leader keeps getting too busy to do a couple jobs that probably take under an hour for months in a row. So might get somewhere eventually.

The originals are better than the 4kids version, and the manga is considerably different than the anime. Not just because the anime had about two full seasons worth of filler, but they order stuff differently, have the whole bunch of characters and character development before the card game starts, and change certain aspects to work better in an anime style. Like for example, until battle city all the games are played on tables. But the monsters appear anyhow as a kind of illusion thing…

Duelist Kingdom overall is much different. The first half is much better in the manga, but the anime version of the finals is really good.

Battle City and Alcatraz are fairly well adapted, even with the filler. After that, the adaption is much looser. Still good, but the manga is much different in the Egypt arc.

Its a shame the knife on money one was toned down, I didn't like its Anime version (the tower of cards thing).

So why did Duke have trouble getting Pegasus to move ahead with his dungeon dice game if he was… uhm... alive? And Bakura taking his eye must have been um... painful.

I think he'd "disappeared" or something. And then Duke did get an answer after he lost to yugi.

The manga version of this was entirely different, having to do with a bitter rivalry between duke's father & yugi's grandfather.

As for filler, I remember liking the Noah arc a lot. Yugi and Joey's duel with the Big Five was pretty cool, and I remember liking Noah's deck theme.

The whole ''send you to the Shadow Realm!'' nonsense in the dub now amuses me, because it actually makes it worse. No, these aren't going to slice off your legs, they'll just send your soul straight to Hell!
