I witnessed the ending in all of it's fantastic glory today. Compared to Miyazaki's other stuff I know of this is definitely the best.
Also, Namulith was a pretty good character.

Yeah.
I recommend you read Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro and Real by Takehiko Inoue next. They're almost as good as this manga.
I've read Gunnm.
Not Real though.
You know, if you combine Dragon Ball and Nausicaa, you have One Piece. The drama in One Piece is inspired by this manga.
Yeah, I keep hearing this from people who's opinions I don't instantly disregard. I've never read it so could you briefly explain why quite a few people consider it undisputedly the best?
Can be endlessly debated about the depth of themes, the originality and development of characters, the world building and its background, the plot details and its overall flow, but most of Nausicaa discussions result in some smartass coming and throwing in "Namulith is awesome!" - and being damn right about it.
Namulith is awesome!
Characters, plot and world building are the best part. The themes are well handled but I'm not crazy about them.
You smartass… :getlost:
I don't really know if Nausicaa deserves its own thread - because it should be discussed everywhere!
But one thread is easier.
It has the most bittersweet cynical "happy ending" there is.
And it's my absolute favourite one. If the end to One Piece leaves me with a feeling half as strong as the one to the end of Nausicäa, I can die happy.
Oh yeah, Namulith IS awesome.
Yes.
Embrace Namulith. It's good.
WOW I know, I am very late but I just finished this! Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind! Epic, yes people epic with a capital E, capital P, capital I, capital C.

When I read the ending, this is what I thought! the last poneglyph has to be something as great as the crypt, or better. If not, One Piece will be doomed to finish with an underwhelming ending.
No one talks about Naausica over here, but it's seeds can be seen everywhere…
One Piece, Kenshin, Berserk etc.
Ah yes, "Nausicaa". My first manga that really got me into manga. "Pokemon" was nice but it didn't leave that impression that made me want to go out and start reading more. I should really go back and re-read it to see if it's held up since those years ago.
I really need to read this. I only read the first chapter.
Unfortunately I don't have a good digital camera so I'm stealing this pics from elsewhere.
I have the deluxe edition of this manga that comes in two giant hardcovers that are pimp as HELLLLLL:
They're over a foot tall, like seriously giant atlas sized books. But I'm convinced there's no other way to read it because those panels are tiny and the pages get way cramped.
How much do those things cost? You've piqued my interest.

Holy damn as fuck. Do want.
It was $75 per book.
That doesn't include shipping but I got them in two separate orders full of books so I'm not sure how much that added, probably closer to $90 per.
Goddamn. Well, I don't speak Japanese so I'll probably wait until I can actually read them before getting them.
A good and revolutionary series.

I've finally reached that moment where I actually want to learn japanese because of a piece of merchandise.
Exactly how I feel man. Those books will someday without a doubt furnish my library.
Nausicaa should be required reading for anyone who fancies to make "strong" women characters.
I personally don't understand why Namulith gets so much hype. He really wasn't in the story all that long and didn't do all that much.
Yupa is way more badass.
Namulith is just fun.

Yep, after all the Namulith talk, I looked forward to his entry, only to be a little dissapointed.
I liked the Torumekian emperor more. And Yupa of course the required vagabond swordsman badass of the story.
So many banned good posters in this thread, and it's only 2 pages. Like a curse. Someday I will see JERK DISEASE with a strike through in his username too. And maybe Mugiwara_no_Ice.
I am re-reading the series and my mind still constantly scream: "Holy shit!". As I get older I start to appreciate it more and more, start to comprehend many things I didn't before.
Funniest parody ever, from the ingenious Usamaru:

Am I the only one who thought of tentacle…uh...while reading this page?

Starting volume 6 out of 7. I'm going slow because, seriously, there's a TON of shit going on everywhere. And people say One Piece's panels are filled. . .
I'm sure this manga exhausted the hell out of Miyazaki. There's a shitload of work behind it.
So far it's close to being perfect. Let's see how it all ends, but I'm expecting nothing but good things for these last 2 volumes.

Well, it took him 12 years off and on to do it between movies. It wasn't exactly a weekly comic.

After finishing Nausicaa I got a high fever and laid unable to sleep for 2 days.
–----------
Nausicaa was drawn by pencil and not inked?
Holy shit.
[hide]
–-------------
Charuka is nuts (though I do like him that way)
!
That much clothing is not efficient?
–--------------
You can't be serious.
!
"practically naked"?
–----------------
Miyazaki intended Yala to wear short pants and moccasins, exposing her bare legs
Miyazaki had intended to make Yala more pulpy than his other female characters, a feature of sketches of her between 1980 and 1982.
So Nausicaa had originally been intended to be sexy? Holy shit.
When Miyazaki draws Nausicaä in poses which are a little "sexy", like the cover of Animage in March 1993, where Nausicaä smiles while wearing a torn tank top,
!
Sexy? She doesn't even look 18.
Granted, when she take such a gallant pose, I expected she would do some badass fighting.
!
But all she did was getting her clothes ripped off and getting saved by Yupa.
!
But why did the Heedra only rip her clothes? What you did there Miyazaki.
What would happen if Yupa didn't interfere?
Though, it sounds a natural a reason for Kushana to give her the cape later, which is a nice detail.[/hide]

This manga is hardcore. F*cking hardcore.
While having 1/100th of Berserk's level of explicit on-panel carnage, the ammounts of atrocities and deaths commited on Nausicaa are probably even higher.
That particular page made me really uncomfortable.
Yeah that page made me shudder as well.
Emperor Vai is bad-ass, Fool is brilliantly hilarious. I especially love Kurotowa. He gave the manga a kind of self-awareness. I like how he complained when Nausicaa went all Jesus Christ. I like how Nausicaa dealt with her hypocrisy. I don't know if I love Nausicaa or Kushana more, but the two has become one in Ashina.
Teto is one badass pokemon.
Asbel and Selm are a little bland.

Namulith is awesome.
MIYAZAKI: I thought the greatest theme in this book was nihilism. But with nihilism, nothing is created. In the end, Namulis, too, could do nothing. Well, he did accomplish the big clean up of the association of monks. Turgenov was right when he said that nihilism can do nothing. It is not a philosophy of accomplishment. I think this applies to Namulis, too. He didn't really want Kushana. It seemed amusing to him, so he got engaged to her.
I wondered if he were thinking blood-thirsty thoughts, but he wasn't. He couldn't. He just took some pain-relief medicine. Nothing of this was explained in the story, but I just thought that he was someone who might become addicted to pain-killers. That kind of person likes the freedom of propriety, the freedom of revolt. [laughs] Even though he never actually gets involved with her, he thinks that Kushana would be a terrible wife. He likes that, too-because he's also that kind of person.
Damn I didn't realize there was fanart for this out there. Nice, very nice.
Nausicaa is the ubermensch Nietzsche described. A human who grieves at the death of a small animal and yet bear the charge of a weapon capable of total human holocaust. A chaos of destruction and mercy.
going to be honest, I liked the movie. Im too stupid to read.

Are you fucking allergic to text.
Hey Jerk, I have yet to read Nausicaa but where did get those awesome pics?
Who is that awesome looking design? I watched the Nausicaa movie and it didn't have that
Also since Miyazaki wrote the Nausicaa movie and manga does that make both canonical?
Also if this manga is as gritty with it's violence as some folks stated then if this was ever adapted for another film or Tv show It might rated R.
Oh wait it's a manga phew for a second, I thought it was….... a......... BOOK! Oh god, now i fell better.
Question- Are there differences between the manga and the movie? Like were things left out of the movie?

I got the pics from google images of the guys name, Namulith.
The manga is the canon, he adapted the movie off of it. Canon is about more then authorship. The movie is nothing, nothing whatsoever next to the comic.
It could well be R.

The movie is inferior to the manga in every sense.
The manga is much more complex and controversial, with a shocking ending. In the end was Nausicaa's murderous and holocaustic action right or wrong, I don't know, but I agree with her philosophy. And her character have developed beyond Jesus Christ, but an ubermensch.
And that cool guy is Namulith, Kushana's husband (I approve of this pairing).

Really? I thought the movie was amazing? I should start reading the manga then. But i doubt that u guys are right, especially u JD. U guys are probably just doin this whole "it's not the original so it sucks" thing. but ill read the manga and see how it is but im just saying I thought the movie was indescribably amazing.

Shut up and read the manga.
Though, I must say it's understandable. The movie itself is a masterpiece that made Miyazaki a household name. However he even tried harder with the manga and created it to be a superhuman feat, a classic among classics, the greatest graphic novel of all time. Anime-only watchers cannot understand why manga-readers's dissatisfaction with the movie and see us as treasonous traitors, blasphemous deicides.
Nausicaa's character at the end remind me of Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
"In Pride and Prejudice she portrays Elizabeth Bennet’s struggle to express her individuality in a society that demanded strict social conformity, a situation far afield for most Western women today, but closely resembling the pressures felt by woman in many Asian countries even now. Elizabeth has inner strength. She doesn’t value people and things just because society values them. She judges according to her own values. She is not socially self conscious or pretentious. She has a natural spontaneity. She has social skill and capacity, but she is not constrained by artificial social formalities. Nor is she a prisoner of her own ego. She has the sincerity to examine her own behavior and the capacity to change. She has the will, as well as the strength, to resist social pressure. Elizabeth is not aggressive, rebellious or frivolous, disrespecting societal norms and breaking rules for fun. She has high human values, and employs her good sense and strong will as she sees fit, thinking independently of her family, friends and neighbors."
So this manga even leaves Watchmen in the dust?

No thats not it about anime only watchers MOST of us can understand what you guys think but we just have our own opinions that no one else agrees with. But anyway, if the manga was truly more amazing then I have to read this right now. ITS NOT ON MANGAFOX WHERE CAN I FIND IT?
So this manga even leaves Watchmen in the dust?
Yes. Watchmen is a greater technical achievement of course. But that's just one category a comic can excell in.
Also shut up Tori22.
