For the people who are legitimately concerned about it being too soon for a re-release, keep in mind that the first DVD set came out almost three years ago. Most things from Funimation have a lower priced re-release after about a year, so this is to be expected.
Funimation dvd discussion II ( UPDATED 8/4/12, FIRST POST FOR F.A.Q)
-
-
I can only speak from my personal experiences, but my main concern for if Funimation drops One Piece is because I've spent a significant amount of money on buying the DVDs and double dipping on Movie 8, and if they drop it now I will be a bit bummed that my investment in collecting the series will be slightly wasted. I'm a completionist, and so the idea of having my DVD sets cut off at season 3 will only make me resort to buying Japanese/Bootleg sets going forward.
Granted the kind of chicken little antics in this thread are a bit premature, but I think it's pretty reasonable to be a bit pessimistic about the future of the series in the states. The information known about it so far isn't looking good, no matter how you look at it.
-
Re-releasing early seasons at a cheaper price is a must for One Piece, much more then any other series they are currently releasing, especially with how long it is.

What are you talking about? Every time someone brings it up to a rep from FUNimation they say "One Piece" is doing well.
-
@king calamari
I definitely understand that sentiment. I hope their plan is to quickly put out a bunch of collection DVDs to catch up through season 3 for people who want to watch the show at a cheaper release price, and then when they're done with those, start up with season 4. Without official word either way, though, it's all just senseless speculation. :(

Maybe I've not kept up with Funi OP news as much as I should've, because I haven't read any news blurb that conveyed that (granted I usually just listen to the podcast and follow this board).
Any links you care to provide?

Movie 1 came out in February and 2 came out in March here. They were seperate.
Ok. Then I have no idea where I got that idea.
I can't help but think it could possibly be Season 4. For example when new video games are coming out they are given place holder titles before the official name is ready. You anime folks would know better than I would, but if Shin Chan can have season 3 collection part 1, I don't see why One Piece can't have "One Piece season 4 collection 1" as well. Still everything does point toward "nothing has been recorded plus its just gotta be the full season 1."
I was thinking this too. That this listing is only a placeholder for what will be next DVD set. The thing is that I am not sure how often Amazon does this.
-

That's what I'm thinking as well. The vague title, the strangely cheap price. At least one of these is wrong, or will at least be elaborated on once an announcement is made. Amazon placeholders are common for the site and they are sometimes misleading and even wrong, especially placeholders that are put in the first day or two.
If it is a rerelease "collection", it should at least be two voyages in one to make the price seem somewhat sane. A full season would just be a steal. It could also be a new set, for all we know. Not the most likely scenario, but still possible until Amazon or someone else fills in the blanks
I would recommend some people to preorder this just to see what this may end up being, and cancel if it turns out not to your liking
-
I REALLY hope people have some brains and aren't reading my last post as a legitimate overreaction…
i wouldn't put it pass some forum goers here. some people completely miss the context of people's speech/ and or reaction

and hopefully this'll reel in the tightwad's who have been holding on to every cent of their money, and give them the push they needed to buy the series. assuming of course this is what we think it is: a real re-release
-
Maybe this "One Piece Collection 1" is just a code-name for one piece Season 4, as someone suggested?
With all the hype about OP Season 4 that Funi's been seeing, I'm sure if they were to announce it, they would want it to be a surprise, or something big. So, maybe they're just calling it "Collection 1" now, and they'll announce One Piece Season 4 in this huge announcement at one of the upcoming cons. When are the next couple of cons that Funi is attending?
-
Next week. Sakuracon and AnimeBoston.
On the one hand I don't want to get my hopes up. But then the little kid inside of me gets all giddy just thinking about it.
-
I hope we do actually get some solid info from Funi at one of the cons. Aside from that, I'm hoping to hear of a release date for Angel Beats at Anime Boston…but I digress. XD
-
One Piece Collection 1 eh? If it's a DVD, its prolly a movie (its only like 20 bucks), but if its a Blu-ray, then I already know its just Season 1 on Blu-ray.
Edit: HOLY SHIT! You know what? It could be a collection of movies! Like what FUNi did with the DBZ movies and make it like a double feature, OR if it is Season 4, then I think the call it Collection 1 cuz its the first collection of 16:9 episodes?
-
My guess: Season 4-5 announced at Sakuracon/AnimeBoston and this amazon set is just a repackaging of season 1 voyage 1. Just 1. I mean it is 35$. Which is what Kai is going to be re-priced at in May.
-
Lawlz. I should upload my fake Season 4 box art picture to the amazon Collection 1 picture. Since it doesn't have an image yet.
Edit: More LAWLZ! Someone else said they think that the collection is English dubbed episodes of 391+ that FUNi started way back when! But, if that (by some weird chance) is the case, then no "More LAWLZ!".
-

This has been mentioned several times already. I'm still thinking its movies 1-3 or 1-4. A rerelease just doesn't make sense to me now.
-
^It really doesn't to me either. I am on the same boat as you, I hope it's the movies. The one you suggested 1-4 would be awesome since we'd have Dead End Adventure on there, and that's my fav movie. But, the downside to that is, One Piece be following the Detective Conan route.
-
I remember 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 all being decent to good… 4 and 6 were great, I hope the set is 1-4 too. I mean, the first three movies were short too, so I don't see why they wouldnt have four.
EDIT: Yeah, the first three movies were 50-60 minutes long. They should definitely have four on there...
-
FUNimation did it for the first four Dragon Ball movies, I don't see why they can't do it for One Piece!
-
On second thought, at that low a price, I'm beginning to doubt it's a new Season 4 set.
Perhaps someone can bring it up at SakuraCon/AnimeBoston?
-
And if it were a rerelease with more episodes, it would cost the same as a voyage. Obviously it isn't a rerelease of the same 13 ep voyage, there is no point in that, they'd just lower the msrp on the other sets…
Its gotta be a movie pack or amazon screwup.
-
You're ruling out a S.A.V.E. re-release, which usually retail on Amazon for about 25-35 bucks. It could have S1V1 and S1V2 in it (26 episodes), which is what they've done on a bunch of other S.A.V.E. titles.
If it is a S.A.V.E. release, that's not a good sign. That label seems to be reserved for old or underperforming series.

You could be right, but I doubt it. That would also explain why it doesn't say 'season 1'. But, I'm still going to go ahead assuming its the movies. I don't think a re-release sounds right.
-
S.A.V.E. releases are $29.99 or less. The only ones that cost more than that are the Heroic Age and Tsubasa Season 1 Blu-Ray S.A.V.E.s
Also, doing a S.A.V.E. now would require skipping couple steps in their release method. Generally complete season sets (or at least 26 episode sets in this case) and Viridian Collections come before a S.A.V.E. Though I don't know if they're still doing Viridian Collections.
-
They did Viridian Collections just a few months ago with VC's of the original Fullmetal Alchemist Season Sets. With new box art and everything.
But if FUNi is going to do a S.A.V.E. of One Piece or a Viridian Collection then we should hear about it at an upcoming con.
-
my best bet is funi started dubbing the movies and that could be the reason there has been no news surrounding season four.On the other hand season 4 could include the complete water 7 and ennies lobby arcs which i am prety confident it shall. It would take years to for the complete season to be released and so to speed up the process maybe funi decided to scrap the voyages and start up this collection scheme?Someone who is attending the upcoming cons should definitely bring it up!
-
If there is indeed news about more "One Piece" they probably wouldn't announce it until AFTER they finish releasing season 3. That's the point I think a lot of fans are missing.
-
They're not going to have any trouble licensing episode #493 for home video now. They've just gotten Toriko's streaming rights.
[/tangentally related]
-

The reason I'm not sure is because there haven't been any released since December and there are none scheduled up through June. They've also released Rin -Daughters of Mnesdigsfg- as an Anime Classic without ever doing a Viridian Collection, so they may have decided to drop that particular label.

HOLY SHIT! SERIOUSLY?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Nevermind. I found the article. Thank God. My prayers have been answered. Seems like we're finally getting the FULL Dream 9 now!
-
Well, it is nice that we actually have some sort of a "new" release (even if it's a re-packaging) and honestly, a re-packaging is not necessarily a bad thing. A lot of Funimation's best selling titles have gone through multiple releases - Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragon Ball Z, etc. - and people have made some very good points about it selling well (RightStuf and AMAZON top selling lists) and knowing that breaks for longer series aren't uncommon, even with stuff as popular as Naruto or Bleach (Naruto is on its third release - individual TV cut DVDs, uncut boxed sets, and now uncut economy boxes).
I think the pessimism might be because the series has had a lot of back luck in Region 1 so the fandom is just pre-dispositioned to take every little thing as bad news. Series get liscensed? It's by 4Kids. They promise to treat the series well? They don't. 4Kids loses the license? Now no one has One Piece. Funimation picks up the series? It's a not until over a year later we get episodes on DVD. Funimation dub is on Toonami? Cancelled despite (supposed) increased ratings. The fastest simulcast at the time it was released (an HOUR after airing Japan?!)? Cancelled for three months over a hacker.
Personally I'm getting annoyed with all the pessimism in this thread. REALLY annoyed. We keep seeing things that could LEGITIMATELY be a GOOD SIGN and they are either ignored for more "chicken little" antics or interpreted as a bad thing anyways.
-
I hear the sky is falling. Does that mean One Piece is cancelled?
-
I own all the Seasons 1-3 Voyages + Movie 8 and even If it is a re-release of the series, I will probably go all out and get 10 copies of each re-release, just to support the series and hope for season 4. One to keep, give a few away as gifts and sell the rest online. Heck, even when FUNimation lowers the prices on all the sets I will probably buy several copies to give away and sell.
-
My friend has been thinking about getting into One Piece, so if this is a re-release of the first 2 Voyages of Season 1 in one set, I will buy it for him for his birthday.
-
I actually managed to get a friend into the FUNimation dub a couple of months ago. He knew I liked the series but all he knew of it was the 4Kids dub. I told him about how FUNi got the license from them and right now he's on Season 3 Third Voyage. He's fallen in love with the series and it would really suck for him to not be able to see more English episodes once he gets to the end of Season 3 Voyage 5.
-
Since FUNi just said they're gonna give us Toriko tomorrow, it makes me wonder: Can FUNi still put subbed episodes out even if they don't have the rights to S4?
-
They can, I think. They're putting out the current episodes even though they don't have the rights to them.
-
i say give it a month after the release of Season 3 fifth voyage before we get anything. for all we know they could have dubbed these 206+ and are just being super secretive about it and waiting for a major con to announce it. kinda like what viz did with naruto back in 09
-

Of course. The streaming rights and the dubbing rights are two different things.

And if its a movie set, buy two for you and him…And one for me...

It could be earlier. Anime Boston and Sakura Con are both Easter weekend, which is less than two weeks away.
-
Huh. So it's a Mystery Collection!
I'm intrigued; I'm also hopeful that it's the start of an OP Specials/Movie collection, rather than a re-release (don't they normally try to get through the first release first?)

A month after Season 3 5th Voyage is close to Anime North (May 27th) in Toronto, which is Canada's biggest anime convention, and one of North America's top ten cons.
Funimation's had panels and sneak peeks at AN for the last 2 years, so I wouldn't doubt one this year as well. If we haven't heard anything about Season 4 or this mystery collection by then, I'll make an attempt to drag info out of them cracks knuckles.
-
well if you think about it whenever someone asks FUNi how One Piece is doing they say one of 2 things.
1. They say they havn't dubbed anything passed 205
2. They say they can't say anything about it.and more recently they say to be patient.
this could mean
a) There still negiating with Toei
b) There currently dubbing they just cant/dont want to say anything
c) One Piece dub is dead and just waiting for a suitable time to say something.in my opinion we shouldn't begin to worry, we should only start worrying if FUNi dont say anything before Anime Expo, if Anime Expo passes and we got no news then we worry. so we have now till then to get news, a good 3 months. if we dont get ANY news in that period then i think we should consider switching to subs if you havn't began already.

i do regularly watch the subs, and am also caught up. however the dub has a special place in my heart, so if its done for (highly doubt it now) its back to the manga for me.
so funi really got the rights to Toriko, or just the crossover episode??!! if so im in love?
-
Does anyone know what reasons Toei would have for not giving Funimation more episodes? Its obvious that Funi would continue it if possible.

Sales wouldn't be good enough to make a profit and make up for the licensing and production costs.

They have the streaming rights, but not necessarily the license to dub it (at least not yet, I suppose).
-
Another possibility is that they could only have the 4:3 masters for 207+ and they're trying to negotiate for the 16:9/HD masters (and a possible Blu-ray license) before announcing anything.
I know, I know, overly optimistic.

but they had to have known the risks right? are they even aware of the state of anime in America? it wont get any better than it is now

that's good enough for me. i know one day they will get the rights to dub the content.
-
If it's a movie collection…it should have movie 6 since Funimation just released Summer Wars in the US which has the same director. Would be a good time for OP movie 6....also STRONG WORLD!
-

Of course they know the risks. But they have to draw a line somewhere.
