Funimation dvd discussion II ( UPDATED 8/4/12, FIRST POST FOR F.A.Q)

I have a propaganda for you all.
I hope that this works. Because its the only idea I have to get the DVD sales up.

Post all over the web what DVD sets you got.
That means on Twitter, Facebook, You-Tube, or whatever you can think of.
Post it to let funimation know that people really want more One Piece. And to also let other people know to actually buy One Piece.

And actually, if you're trying to get someone into the series, tell them to get Season 1 1st Voyage. And then tell them the amount of DVD's that have been released by funimation. That should reduce this scare of "OMG! THIS SERIES IS TO LONG!! T_T"

It really shouldn't take much effort at all. But just get the word out. And tell other people to do the same. Tell them to post what DVD's of One Piece they have.

This is the only idea I can think of. Sorry if it sucks.

May I make a couple of edits:

1. I believe the word you're looking for is "proposition" ;)
2. It strikes me that the best places to post these photos is on Funimation's Facebook page and however it works for Twitter (the thing with the at sign, I think) - I'm pretty sure that someone from Funimation has to keep an eye on those so if they notice a bunch of One Piece DVD pictures suddenly cropping up they might get the message

I'll be getting season 3 soon, already have all up to the end of the Alabasta arc. Was wondering because I saw a video on youtube and Blackbeard doesn't have his distinct laugh…is there any reason for that? Funi mistake or no one knows?

Funi usually doesn't leave in the laughs.

The laugh thing is odd, because in the Wii game both Arlong and Eneru kept their distinct laughs in english (and really, Arlong's english 'Shahahahahaha!' was actually really well done), but I guess FUNi decided not to use them in the dub somewhere along the way.

But they have kept the distinct laughs for Dorry and Broggy, and it makes me think they'll do the same for all 'giant' characters. The giants have always had the oddest laughs in the world of One Piece, and since there's an issue of actually calling a giant out on his laugh later on I guess they felt it was best to keep those.

It is a bit disappointing we won't hear Blackbeard's laugh in english, but the sub track is always there. I can't help but wonder what they'll do with Moria if we ever get to Thriller Bark, but I guess we'll have Franky build that bridge when we come to it.

Blackbeard's laugh has a habit of not being there at first then resurfacing later, and they've gotten better about leaving in the original laughs throughout the dub, so just keep your fingers crossed (BB is one character who should keep his laugh).

And the marathon feature is pretty handy; I use it with the Dragonball sets (not the orange ones, the blue ones). They should use it for more DVD releases

But my reasoning for it was, to get other people to buy the DVD's.

i liked the trailer for fifth voyage. the only probem i had with it was chopper saying season 3 voyage 5, instead of season 3 fifth voyage the way it should be.

Perhaps now that he's committed it to DVD, he'll… stop telling it...

I love Tatum, He's awesome, I could listen to him talk all day.
But I've heard the Jack-In-the Box Story like 500 times by now. It's like my Grandfather's old WWII Story about flipping his jeep.

Love the man to death, can't hear that story... again...

Also, despite a convoluted mess, my DVD is FINALLY Shipping TODAY!
Will have it by the end of the week it looks like.

I don't think he told he story on the commentary. Just said that him, Colleen and Mike should go out and do their voices at the Jack in the Boxes around town.

They changed Usopp's "You son of a bitch!" into "That bastard!"

And Luffy's "That won't work on me, dumbass!" was just changed to "That won't work on me!".

Maybe they were just character dialog fixes… But still, how odd.

Funimation seemed to lighten up on the swearing as they went on, Do you guys have any idea why? It's not a big deal though, but a couple "shit" and "asshole" thrown in every once in awhile would be nice for ol time sake

Well, they've really only used 'shit' twice. I can't think of 'asshole' being tossed around.

Yeah 'shit' was said twice, both by Buggy. As for 'asshole' it was said once by Sanji to Gin in episode 27

Ussop never ceases to make me laugh, and Nami was really great in this set :)

I wouldn't see "Son of a Bitch" to "That bastard!" as being "censorship" considering… BOTH Terms are swear words...

Any number of reasons could exist for that change. Maybe they thought "Bastard" fit Usopp's character better?

"That Bastard" is also 2 syllables less than the Son of a Bitch line. Maybe they decided on that one because the longer one sounded more rushed?

The same could be said about Luffy's line.

There is already enough swearing in the dub for me to doubt greatly these changes were made for Censorship reasons.

I never liked Usopp saying that. It was a bit too much for him, especially in the situation it was used in.

It would be appropriate during his quarrel with Luffy in Water 7 though.

All this talk of curse words and censorship has me wondering if they've laid down a TV friendly track for the episodes already done in case of a syndication deal. Otherwise they have a lot of episodes to go through and edit to be suitable for Western TV.

It would look like it. I mean why go to court for a show you don't care about or not making money. Unless Funi just really want to make some sort of profit but by the sounds of it they won't make much of a dime seeing that they still need to pay lawyers and such.

Either that or Toei wants them to crack the whip and proof how bad Funi wants to keep dubbing and streaming One Piece.

Hey, y'all. I just saw this mentioned in ANN's debate on the lawsuit fiasco and was wondering if there was any truth behind it:

Greg Ayres, whenever he is doing his fansub panels, has said time and time again "the series that proved people weren't "buying after previewing" was One Piece. One Piece has some of the lowest DVD sale numbers out of all of Funimation's titles.". He should know what he's talking about, he was IN the dub.

It struck me as odd since I last heard the series had been selling well. With the lack of information regarding Season 4 (last time I checked, anyway) I guess I can't help but feel a bit worried..?

If that's the truth, then… people are fucking stupid. Out of all the titles FUNi owns... ONE PIECE is the one with lowest sales? Implying that some of the throw away anime FUNi owns are selling BETTER!? I just don't believe it... But if it's true... Then One Piece was never meant to come stateside. That's... pretty much it.

It probably has to do with One Piece being a sub only series for so long, as well as the rape 4Kids did to it, that its fans (or "fans") hate anything that touches its greatness, or even worse, ask money for it.

Compare it to shows that are relatively unknown and new and you won't have such a self-entitled fanbase that tries to do anything to keep it from making a profit for baka companies.

It's not all of that surprising that the numbers are low. Today's fans are teens raised in the digital era. They're years beyond FUNimation's releases and simply don't come from the era we more mature fans did (i.e. the dial-up days). We're two different breeds with two different outlooks. The rich man and the poor man. The penny pencher and the penny ass-wiper (well, more like "wipes ass with hundred dollar bills" but you get the point). It's just not surprising.

God, I feel like a thirty year veteran cop talking to a rookie on his first rounds…

The company releasing it could be at fault for not doing enough to push the license.

But neither of those are a problem. FUNi's doing a lot of marketing and it does have quite a lot of fans. They just don't want to support it.

This seems like hearsay, as well as gross exaggeration over the company's underlying animosity over fansubs.

We'll need more insider (if not official) news on the series' sales status if there is to be any news worth freaking out over.

Well, I still believe we are. Have you guys seen the posts Bleach and Naruto fans make. They're so blind to how inferior those series are to One Piece. And not by opinion, but by fact in writing.
