It's an awesome cover… but... the pic isn't new.
It definitely looks like a pose we've seen them in before, but it doesn't look the same…
I used to have a wall scroll with a similar pose, and everyone was in their Alabasta garb and Vivi was in it.I just think it's a popular pose to stick Luffy in.
Unless someone else can track down the EXACT same image used elsewhere?
@Badass:
Remind me again why some people hope 3.5 contains 11 episodes instead of 13?
I'm afraid the set is going to contain the first two episodes of the Davy Back Fight.
That's the point the series went Widescreen.I don't know if they'd do this, but if they get widescreen masters, then that would mean the series would randomly go widescreen in the middle of a boxed set. Are you sure they'd do that?
I'm afraid we'll get it and find the DBF is gonna be fullscreen.
-
It'd be kinda neat if they stuck the three TV specials on the box set to compensate for having only 11 episodes. Of course, that's wishful thinking on my part.
I just really hope we don't get fullscreen masters, but I'll still buy it regardless.
-
The new cover is good but I am kind of disappointed in it. The image isn't new and has been done before. I really hope this isn't the final cover image and we see something new. Still the cover is good looking at least.

I own the wall scroll. Here is a picture of it hanging in my room. The image looks the same.

Nice wall scroll.
On the subject of the dubs. Why were somethings changed around? Some words were changed. They put in some jokes that didn't make sense or were a cliche.
When Luffy was getting ready to fight Don, Luffy got angry and asked if he was really going to fight him. Luffy stretched out his face and said don't make the monkey angry.
In the Dub he said, I am going to bit your head off. What in the world!?!?! Not only does that not make any sense, it sounds pretty disturbing.
I would prefer subs, but seeing that 5.1 is only supported with the dubs I was going to try and overlook it.
-
Well, don't feel obligated to watch it dubbed. FUNimation oftens does whatever the heck they want with their scripts, accuracy be damned. With the subs the script is being written as litterally as possible (and doesn't have to be fit to mouth flaps).
-
There's four filler eps during the DBF, which is 13 eps in total. There's another two Foxy filler episodes right before Aokiji arives.
IMO,the only good thing about the DB fight arc is the fact that aokiji introduced into the show at the end !

not sure why they do that, but i take with a grain of salt.
id watch the subs more, if the voices weren't so unfitting. plus im not dying to hear puns or anything.on a side note:
so the set will be 11 episodes. -
Magnificent new cover. I'm glad I got to see it. Truly this is a happy day.
-
I wish the subs were surround sound. I can't stand the script changes.

As I said before, sometimes they need to be able to match mouth flaps. They can't have the flaps not match what is being said on the screen. Also sometimes having the actors say the direct translation because it just won't work with the flaps.
That Don Kreig example could fit it. I not sure if that is true or not since I don't have my DVDs but I also hope you are not confusing Funi dubs with 4Kids dubs. Still same difference if you ask me. I would like to bite somebody's head if I was angry. haha
EDIT: If anything the dub verison of that scene sounds better then the Japanese since that monkey thing really sounds silly to hear. If anything sounds like something 4Kids would write.

It is Funi dubs. Go to Hulu for the dubs of Sanji Vs Ghin.

Ok wait a second. "Don't make the Monkey Angry"?! What version of this show were you watching? Was that 4kids?! I tried to find the scene to see what is said in the Japanese, but couldn't find it. Which Episode is it?
"I'm gonna bite your head off" does make sense, it's a general threat.
Honestly, the script isn't really changed all too much. The only time dialog is actually altered is to fit lipflap, and it never really changes the meaning of what is being said. Here's an example from Zoro Vs. Mihawk:
Zoro Sub: He Averted them.
Zoro Dub: he Diverted them
Zoro Sub: He gently changed the course of the bullets Using the Point of his sword
Zoro Dub: He changed the course of the bullets Using the tip of his sword
Guy Sub: That can't be true…
Guy Dub: That can't be...
Guy Sub: Hey! Who are you?!
Guy Dub: Hold on, who do you think you are?!
Guy Sub: Three Swords... Could it be...
Guy Dub: He's got Three swords... It couldn't be...
Zoro Sub: I've Never seen a sword moved so gently...
Zoro Dub: I've never seen a sword handled so gently, or with such grace
Mihawk Sub: There's no strength in swordplay based only on force.
Mihawk Sub: There's no strength in swordplay based on force.
Zoro Sub: Did you use that sword to slive up this ship as well?
Zoro Dub: Did you also use that sword to slice up this ship?
Mihawk Sub: That's Right.
Mihawk Dub: I did.
Zoro Sub: I see... you're the strongest...
Zoro Dub: Then it's true... you're the best...See, every sentence carries the same meaning, its just lightly reworded. The VAST majority of the script is like that. They very rarely outright alter what is being said, and its usually to convey a joke better in English, Like the Gaimon in the box joke, which they adapted well I think.
They've only ever made one light mistake so far. In the Japanese at the end of Alabasta, Smoker tells Tashigi Zoro beat Mr. 1. FUNi had him say "Zoro Killed Daz Bones".
But to be honest, Toei has made worse Continuity mistakes themselves… I mean, Zoro's filler "I can cut steel no problem!" line comes to mind.
Also, don't take Fansubs as Gospel. They make mistakes too, plenty of them. For example, a fansub once translated "Gomu Gomu no Kane (Bell)" as "Gomu Gomu no Iron Headbutt"
EDIT: Think I found the scene he was talking about. FUNi's sub translation of the "Monkey" line make it sound far less moronic than his version was.
Luffy Sub: You Bastard!! Do you really intend to fight me?!
Luffy Dub: You're a Bastard! Don't you wana fight me?!
Krieg Sub: Intent to fight you? I don't need such a thing. What's needed is am eans to kill. That's all
Krieg Dub: Fight you? Do I really have to? If all I want to do is kill you, that's enough for me.
Krieg Sub: And that's the force that humans have, remember it you dman monkey!
Krieg Dub: I really don't have any patience for your silly games, you little fool!
Luffy Sub: What?! If you take a monkey lightly, it'll scratch you!
Luffy Dub: Oh Yeah? Howabout I bite your head off?!The reason is pretty sound. Count the syllables. "If you take a monkey lightly, it'll scratch you!" is 12 syllables. "Howabout I bite your head off!?" is only 8. (Can't count the "What/Oh Yeah?" part, he pauses after it)
Since the dub uses 8, that's how many times Luffy's mouth moves.I honestly can't think of a way to fit the whole "Monkey" line into only 8 lipflaps. Lowest I can get is 10 with "Take a Monkey Lightly, it'll scratch you" which is 10.
The only times the dub makes any more broad changes is for lipflaps, but they are NEVER really a full-on "Change". The Emotion and meaning behind the line is pretty much always the same. In both shots, Luffy is trying to convey that he plans on "Getting" Krieg. In one, he says if he's a monkey, then a monkey will "Scratch" Krieg. In the other, he shouts that he'll bite his head off. Both are threats of violence towards Krieg. Both do the same job.

i meant to be a question mar there, as in:
so the set will be 11 episodes?
and on topic:
please lets not have a sub vs dub war. if anything the dub has been really fateful to the original, if we were to go back to the 90's where dubs were very obscure (pokemon dub ewwwww), id say we got it pretty good. -
@Demon Rin
That line in the subs still sounds silly. haha Then again if I remember correctly, they did poke fun at the fact that Luffy's name was monkey so I shouldn't be surprise. hahai meant to be a question mar there, as in:

I guess I didn't took it as a question since it didn't have a question mark in the end.
Nah. We are not having a war (at least I am not). Just educating somebody on why Funi would change lines at times.
Still true about how dubs have improved since the 90s. Sometimes I really can't say the Pokemon dub is better then the current dub seeing how many changes they did to the scripts compare to what PUSA do with scripts. From what I can tell, the script is mostly the same except for anything that involves Team Rocket. Still dubs have came a long way since the 90s and One Piece is a good example of that.
-

Well, 4Kids version translated it like this.
"Watch out. Or this Monkey'll scratch you".
So it could have fit. Honestly I think it's more because of Luffy's gesture in that scene. He wasn't making his hands look like claws, he was bearing his teeth in a threating way. FUNi probably believed their line will fit more than the original line. I sorta agree. I always thought it was odd how he was showing his 'fangs', but opted to 'scratch' Krieg instead.
Either way, though. The point is "Luffy will hurt him" so either works.
-
showing … his fangs?
he's making a face at him because he's a brat/monkey
-
Are people seriously arguing about this?
Seriously?

And yes. We just explain why Funimation had to change the line. It also one of the very few times they have drastically change a line. Just read this post.
In MY opinion the Funi rewrite sounds better. It would have been awkward to hear then talk about monkeys when there is no reference to it. Don Kreig would have just been randomly talking about monkeys and such.

Didn't a few people on the forums also get bent out of shape by the fact that Mihawk never stated his real name "Dracule Mihawk" and instead referred to himself as "Hawkeye Mihawk" when he defeated Zoro? Just curious. It was quite a while ago since I remember seeing that post.
Personally, I haven't found anything major to complain about in terms of the dub script. I've been rather happy with how One Piece is being handled. ^^

Cover is up.
Was a little jarring to see at first…since I own the wallscroll of that already.
I know I'm WAY behind on my One Piece, but I gotta say that cover is pretty damn cool. Way better than the first batch of S3 covers.

Don't get your hopes up on that Cover guys…
Last time we saw them just reuse stock footage, It ended up being a mockup that got replaced. -
I still wanna see the cover for 4th Voyage, and here's hoping they don't use that uglyass Luffy and Enel one they used on the last 2 promos for other sets.

Pretty sure that IS the cover.

Look closer on the cover and see the word "Fifth" right between the words "Three:" and "Voyage".

I missed out on that 'event' and I don't remember how Mihawk refer to himself.
Still Funi has always seem to do a good job and making sure to keep things the same.

Was that the dub or the sub where Mihawk didn't announce himself by his full name?
-
The FUNimation dub. Apparently somebody didn't realize 'Dracule' was a part of his name…
-
I am writing this because the music thread doesn't get any replies, and I have heard
the DVDs have some of the songs on them. What is the song being played during the first meeting with Conis. It is a purely instrumental. I think it is episode 154 -
So I've decided to rewatch Davy Back since were getting close. Oh, it'll be so good to get to see this arc without "Oyabain!" and "Ossan"! and flashy attack titles
-
I got so used to some of the words that while watching the dub or reading the subtitle I no what they are saying. Aniki = Gang Brother Ossan = Pops/ Old man and so on.
Even in the dub whenever I here Pops or old man I know it was originally Ossan and I can hear it. Sorry for some spelling issues on the japanese words. -
@Yuugi's:

Honestly, the subtitles call him "Dracule Mihawk". It was probably a stylistic change. One of the few they've ever made. Honestly, I think this and Sanji saying "Delicious!" instead of "Concasse!" against Satori are the ONLY times I've ever seen FUNi outright change something in a way that doesn't preserve any of the Japanese version's meaning for seemingly no reason.
Trying to paint it as them being stupid and "Not realizing" it is a bit odd…

Well, they are either 'stupid' or 'arrogant'. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and took that 'stupid' path, rather than outright claim it as being another of their many liberty-takings across their history of dubbing anime.

Deciding to have him refer to himself by his actual epithet instead of his name is "Arrogant"?!…
WOW... Just... just wow... I mean how dare they! Having Mihawk call himself "Hawkeye" COMPLETELY RUINS THAT SCENE! It just... now, why the fuck should Zoro even want to go on living as a Swordsman when Mihawk wouldn't say his family name for him?!
Guys, it's Boycott time.
This isn't like that Time Toei had Zoro cut steel in Apis, or Toei had Chopper eat 2 Rumble Balls, or that time they had the GALL to change those Rocks thrown at Conis and Robin into Tomatoes, or Law's Middle finger got taken out.
THEY. MADE. MIHAWK. CALL. HIMSELF. "HAWKEYE"!
This isn't even boycott worthy, it's time to call for their blood.
-
While I admit I too wasn't happy with that change, like Rin said, it's nothing incredibly dire.
When compared to 99% of the dialogue that they keep true to the original, it's equivalent of an irritating mosquito bite easily forgotten once healed.
-
Double Zoro is dumber than anything FUNi has ever done during One Piece's dubbing.
Sanji with Zoro's voice is up there too.

You do realize that One Piece is an Anime, right? And by being on this forum, you're implying that you're a fan of said anime. Thus making you, yourself an Anime Fan.
Just saying.
And those changes are hardly boycott-worthy.

Keep your pants on. Where did I ever blow this out of proportion (like you're doing now)? I gave them the benefit of the doubt and called them careless rather than 'arrogant' (as in "Hell, we know what we're doing better than Japan does!"). Don't waste your time going on unprovoked rants that blows mere speculation out of proportion.
And just for the hell of it: creating an entire episode of the anime takes a hell of a lot more time, money, and effort than FUNimation puts into dubbing a single episode of the series. It's a little silly to compare the two, don't'cha think?
-
Toei is doing a pretty good job. Relax and lay off. I picture myself rewatching episodes more than I will ever reread them. There are quite a few differences between the Manga and the anime, that is why it is best to ENJOY BOTH.
-

It only takes one or two persons to quality control though.

The conversation at hand is barely worth replying to.
To those of you who didn't know about the wallscroll:
http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/NHFBu99GppKjEEXSZf/browse/item/82650/4/0/0It's a nice wallscroll, really. I wouldn't mind if that was kept for the picture of Pt5. I mean, what would be better? A picture of the Straw Hats at G8? Nah.
I like it when they end a boxset at the end of an arc, even if it means two less episodes. It makes more sense as well, considering its the end of a season. So hopefully, they'll only have eleven episodes.
As for the possibility of them not doing season four, it feels like once they've decided to release new episodes (S3Pt5), they probably aren't planning to stop after one boxset. Especially with all the slip of tongues and rumors about Water 7. (Not to mention they already have Franky, Lucci, and Kaku's voice actors from the Wii game) Meaning they probably weren't planning to stop right before introducing them and the best arc in One Piece.
Also, isn't One Piece gaining popularity in the US lately?
Edit/Add: And whoever put up the link to that website with all the cover arts, THANK YOU. I didn't know the Tsubasa OVAs were being released until I saw the covers on that website. Very excited. Very cool. Thanks.
-
So…FUNi changed Dracule Mihawk's name to Hawkeye Mihawk? Wow, that's worse than all the stuff Toei has already done to the anime itself.
No, no, they just made him call himself by his nickname instead of by his full name after he beat Zoro at the Baratie. His surname is still Dracule in the dub as far as I am aware.
-

My problem is that you actually seem to think it makes FUNimation "Arrogant" to have changed something like that. "Stupid" and "Arrogant" are not the only options here.
1: They thought it sounded better to say "Hawkeye" IN ENGLISH. Remember, these are different languages kids.
2: They may have known about the Juracule - Dracule Debate that used to rage in the fanbase until the release of Green, so they may have decided to be non-committal in the dub.
3: They could have tried it a few times both ways ("Dracule" and "Hawkeye") just to have a Choice. One of Mihawk's VA's performances of the "Hawkeye" version of the line may have been hist best read, so they went with that. You don't know WHY they made such an incredibly minor tiny little tidbit of a line alteration, yet you assume there could only have been two possible, and wholly nefarious reasons. Stupidity and outright arrogance.
That rubs me the wrong way.
-

I know… I was just being sarcastic my good sir.
Seriously, what's so horrible about him a dressing himself by his nickname instead of his actual name? Is not like of they ACTUALLY changed his name. IMO, this discussion is pretty much stupid... FUNi has done far worser things on other anime that they have dubbed. We should at least be grateful that the ones working on it is not 4Kids.
