I been wondering for some time now, what they plan to do with Kumas voice. Do you think Funimation will try to keep his calm demeanor voice or go for something more deeper or perhaps, austrian?
Kuma's voice
-
-
I want a deep voice. And Austrian, that's how I imagined it.
-
Definitely deep. Accent is not necessary, but I'll accept it if it's done well.
-
I think they should choose Joel Mcdonald. I think it's pretty close to his original
If he deepens his voice a little he would be perfect
-
Accent is a bad, BAD, BAAAAAAAAAAAD Idea, and anyone who thinks he should have it doesn't know what they're talking about.
Seriously, I know he's partially based on the Terminator, but no.

Your main concern is a bunch of crappy accents a'la 4Kids, correct? I hear ya on that one. But, like I said, if the accent is done well, there shouldn't be a problem.

He speaks the same dialect of Japanese as the rest of the characters. There is no reason he needs to have a different accent in English, other than to make a completely unneeded reference to a movie.
-
Part of Kuma's menace is that he's a huge guy who speaks with a very quiet calm voice.
Its almost like an emotionless monotone. An accent would be completely unnecessary and ruin the effect.
-
As long as it isn't like a loveless andriod, I don't care.
-
It's obvoius who they should get to voice him.
Ahnold :ninja:
-
Kuma's voice should be emotionless. It doesn't have to be too deep, just emotionless. Almost with an eerie calmness to it.

These two gentlemen understand fully, I applaud you my friends.
As for the accent, I can name tons of reasons why it'd be a bad idea, but while sitting and thinking about it, I can only really name one reason to give him an accent, and that's to make a one-off reference to a movie.
Other than that, there is absolutely no reason to do it.
And even the people who are pro-accent add the qualifier "If it's well done".
I say, either they can go for that and run the high risk of it sounding ridiculous, or they can ignore the "accent" idea entirely, and while they can mess up the dialog or the directing, there would be no chance of there being a goofy and offputting accent. -

This is 100% correct and 0% wrong.

Jamieson Price would be cool…

This…is my first applause. :cwy:
-
I understand that you don't want a Terminator accent. Just remember, FUNi is not 4Kids, so they won't give him a retarded accent for the sake of having an accent to play off of pointless references.
-
I like his japanese voice. Its not that deep and its very calm and deceiving because he's so big you'd expect a big voice. He's soft spoken, he doesn't need a deep voice to make him intimidating in fact the soft calming monotone way he talks is better because just by hearing his voice you don't know where he's coming from. Kuma is the chillest of all the villains so far, really hope they don't make his voice a novelty act…
-
His voice isn't very deep. Actually, it's quite light. It is very soft spoken, and his voice tends to resonate. They should get someone who can do that.
-
As long as they have a deep emotionless voice, I'll be happy. I can't stand the Japanese one - he sounds like a devious teenager.
-
Since I still believe Jerry Jewel should be Brook, I say make Vic Mignogna be Kuma, in his softer voice not in her shouting Brolly range.
-
He seems like a person who would have a Arnold Schwarrzenegger (I know I spelt that wrong)
-

No. No. No. Enough with the Arnold Schwamnnerihrtyj. What sane person imagined an Arnold Schwnfdnthe voice while reading the manga? None. It would turn Kuma's character into a joke. If you want hahah funny accents, then go back to watching 4kids. Rin made a point, but it seems people just ignored it because of their thirst for California Bodybuilder Governators.
-
I think if anybody in the series would've had a Ahnold voice, it would have been Aokiji for Mr. Freeze jokes like "kick some ice," "stay cool," "iceman cometh," etc.
Or how about… "You pirates shoulda leurned your history. Then you'd know about... DE ICE AGE!!"
And thank God they didn't do that. But 4Kids would have, I'm sure.
-
Why do you guys hate accents so much? Because of 4Kids? My friend would feel like SHIT around you guys…
People have accents. They exist. I don't see how it's such a problem for a person in One Piece to have an accent.
Not saying that Kuma should have one (I don't think he should either)... But, still..
-
It's not so much a hate of accent as the fact that Kuma with an accent wouldn't work in my opinion. As people have pointed out already, part of Kuma's impact seems to be his quiet, calm voice.
-

I know. Like I said, I don't believe Kuma should have an accent either.
But with the way some of these responses sounds, it just makes it seem like they hate accents. Period.
-
Very soft voice is what I would like, the Japanese VA does a great job, I remember first hearing him in Thriller Bark when this giant robot dude started talking so damn calm and soft with the dramatic music in the background, it just added to the creepy factor so I hope they stick with that..
-

Accents are a point of contention because most of the time when used indubbed anime it makes the characters seem silly. That's ok for some characters and in some animes but you can't take a character seriously if his voice is a cheap gag. If you watch the japanese anime hardly any of the characters have silly or exaggerated voices where they aren't necessary.

I believe in preserving the original intention. They don't have accents per se in Japanese, but they do have dialects that are clearly distinct and are, for all intents and purposes the equivalent to an accent.
If the author wanted a character to talk differently than everyone else, the author would give them a different dialect than everyone else. Giving a character a random Accent, like OH, LET'S SAY Giving Robin a thick hickish southern drawl, is very very wrong because she doesn't have a different dialect than anyone else.
For a non One Piece point, anyone who has Seen Azumanga Daioh, there is a character nicknamed "Osaka" because she has a distinctly different dialect than everyone else, she talks like she's from Osaka. (hence the nickname)
The dub gave her an accent, and it worked wonderfully for that circumstance. There, I would DEFINITELY say an accent was called for.For a One Piece example, Kaku and Mr. 2. Kaku has the dialect of an elderly man. And it becomes a point of contention. In Unlimited Adventure, he didn't talk enough to make it an issue, but when they dub Kaku in the series, they need to do something to his voice to get that point across. I don't know any accent that'd work in this situation, but if there was an "Old Man" accent, giving one to him would be good.
Mr. 2 has the dialect of a stereotypical Gay man. Watch him in Japanese, notice he ends most of his sentences with "Yo" or "Wa Yo".
In the dub, if you pay attention, he KINDOF has an accent. Somewhat of an effeminate way of speaking to him. That's good and is perfectly needed.
An accent on Kuma is a big BIG No no.
-
I always expected Kaku to use old man words (youngsters, sonny, etc) as opposed to having some type of accent.
-
I agree Kuma doesn't really need a accent, i can just hear him with a emotionless kind of deep voice kind of monotone-ish
-

Ben Stein?
But yeah, seriously, Kuma should not be given some kind of accent in the English dub. For some reason, I think it'd be funny, yet maybe appropriate, for Jay Hickman to voice Kuma…since he did voice Mechazawa and it just seems to fit.

LOL@ Ben Stein but that does make sense
-
i keep picturing a voice thats more whisperey than deep

Keanu Reeves for Kuma.
-
Jerry Jewel….again? Or maybe .....Vic Micnogna? He doesn't seem to have any important characters in this show. And Jerry Jewel is MOST LIKELY to play Brook. I can't see anyone else. The guy who plays Allen has a pretty soft voice. ........All right, I probably sound like an idiot after that, right?
Speaking of voices, I hope when FUNimation gets to Jinbei, they get a voice closer to Mr. Gori's. No offense to Mr. Hoki, I just like Gori's voice better, although his voice fits now.
-
I'll say again, Joel McDonald has range.:whistling:
also the other actor in this clip (Rob McCollum) plays Doflamingo.
-
hmm i can see Joel McDonald playing Iceburg during his younger age
-
I don't know why, but I'm imagining 4Kids making Kuma speak in a obnoxiously high stereotypical nazi german voice.
Imagine that whole silence and then when speaking for the first time, going obnoxiously loud and stereotyped like hellNEIN (Eats sausage) Wo willst du im holidays? My fuhrer.
Alternatively, they would make him have an angelical voice and throw bible references everywhere
I miss 4Kids
-

I liked David Moo's Sanji it was a unique voice for Sanji

With "unique" being a Euphemism for "Terrible to the point where he's nowhere near the same character anymore"?
Because by that definition, "Unique" would be right.

Not that I liked the voice, but I don't see how it changed him from being a chef who likes the ladies.
-

This statement reminds me of those cooking shows where the judges, to be polite when the food fails, say, "Oh, this is unique."
-

That would be like the best Duval voice ever.
-
@Yonkou:

It really would. Sadly, I doubt Funimation would do that…I mean, they didn't bring him back for Xellos in the newer Slayers (I actually kinda liked his Xellos:ninja:). But if they do bring him in for Duval, it would be nothing short of awesome!
-

No Annoying is more like it, the fake accent and he sounded like he had a stuffy nose, it didn't fit Sanji's smooth kick-ass cook personality, I will say I did like Robin's 4kids voice if she didn't have the accent i think it would've been good, and Zoro's is a good one too
-
I always pinned him sounding like Eighter from DB or To-Oh from YYH
