So I found out about this today, and I thought us art forum folks should give this a look! Created in response to Comedy Central censoring South Park after being intimidated by islamic extremists, EDMD is simple enough: on May 20th, you draw Mohammed. Simple as that. Mohammed eating ice cream, Mohammed walking his dog, Mohammed napping, Mohammed watching Jersey Shore in disgust, s'up to you!

The reason people are doing this is not because they're religiously insensitive.

Hi, guys! So like… I heard a bunch of religions get made fun of on a regular basis and that's okay and junk but this totally serious religion where they blow you up and stuff doesn't want stuff to happen and thang and I really think you shouldn't do it because we're all equal. Equal in the sense that we all can say whatever about Jesus and Buddha and whatever and still totally realize that we should totally respect this one religion totally.

Police in New York are investigating whether a car bomb in Times Square was targeted at the makers of South Park over a controversial depiction of the Prophet Mohammed.The device, which failed to detonate, was left near the offices of Viacom, which owns the irreverent cartoon series.

Last month postings on an Islamic website warned the creators of South Park - Matt Stone and Trey Parker - that they could face violent reprisals after an episode of the show featured Mohammed in a bear suit.

A posting on the website of a US-based group called Revolution Muslim warned Stone and Parker that they would “probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh”, the Dutch film-maker who was murdered in 2004 by a Muslim angered by his film about Muslim women.

Images of the Prophet are strictly forbidden in Islam, and Comedy Central, which broadcasts South Park, has banned Stone and Parker from depicting Mohammed in the past. In 2006 the network stopped them from featuring Mohammed in an episode which followed worldwide protests over a caricature of the Prophet by a Danish cartoonist.

Detectives are also understood to be investigating striking similarities between the New York bomb and two car bombs planted by Islamic terrorists outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub in London in 2007.

In both cases, the devices comprised cylinders of propane gas and cans full of petrol intended to be ignited by electronic detonators.

I unno, it just seems too convenient to mockingly portray Mohammed in drawing and to legitmize and back it up with the claim that "I'M SUPPORTING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH HERE!!"
When you're drawing Mohammed (or pasting his face on Ronald McDonald's face), just how much are you doing it for "the protection of the freedom of speech and those people who hold dear to it", and how much of it is "because other people are doing it and if I do it people will think I'm cool and funny and righteous and courageous to pull off a stunt like that".
And from the pictures of Mohammed posted here so far, I'm detecting more of the latter.

And guys, lay off Capt. Usopp. It's ironic that people are participating in this project for the sake of the feedom of speech, yet they'll boo and ridicule and shoo away the people who come in here giving a piece of their mind about why they don't think this is a good idea.

In my opinion, I don't see why anyone would want to make a big deal out of this being a big deal. It really isn't that big of a deal and I'm pretty sure that's the whole point. Now, say this is just a blantant, "fuck your stupid ass religion" thread then yes… THAT would be messed up and totally inappropriate but the way I see it, all of this is just a way to show we're all on the same ground. That's something I whole-heartedly approve of.

People aren't just bitching about this, they're blowing themselves up over it. How freaking close-minded can you be? If you're a muslim living in America then you need to realize and realize now that you're not in the middle east anymore and shit does work differently here.
