Chapter 582: "Luffy and Ace" Discussion Thread

poor poooor luffy T___T don't worry dear, everything will be alright.
bepo is awesome btw ^^''

@robbybedfart:
And I guess officially… Luffy didn't meet Ace till AFTER Shanks left. Makes me wonder all the more what Shank's interest in Ace was. Was he aware he was Roger's son? Had stories gotten back to him of Luffy having a brother? Did they just meet on the sea somewhere along the way before Ace joined WB?
If you look back at the chapter that shows Ace's flashbacks there's a panel that shows Ace visiting Shanks and introducing himself as Luffy's brother.
-
Good chapter, too bad there's a break next week.:sad:

Well, we did get that scene of Ace meeting Shanks, so it's enough for me to surmise Shanks considered him a friend too.
@robbybedfart:
QUESTION. Is there any sort of japanese pun to be made out of luffy's shirt being a 56? Or it it just random shirt decoration?
5 is "go" so I assume it's a gomu pun. Is 6 mu? I always thought it was roku and 3 was mu.

Ace seeked out Shanks at Grand Line before meeting Whitbeard, he wanted to tell Luffy's regards to him. Shanks was originally suspicious but when Ace explained that he was Luffy's brother they befriended.

just noticed as well on the cover that Zoro is number 10 as well. So he is the captain of that team. I wonder if that helps to let people see that he is vice-captain of the crew or first mate or whatever you want to call it
someone said 10 in soccer is the captains number. luffy as zoro both have 10 on their jersey

@robbybedfart:
Luffy's suffering is palpable. Excellent job following up on that Oda, but it was to be expected. Emotional stuff tends to be his strong point. But given all his crying and hititng things and not believing and suffering here on page, (and it took me a bit to realize he was trying to hit something hard enough to wake up and make the bad dream go away…) I expect him to tough past it pretty quickly after the flashback and live on, more determined than before. When Jimbei tells him things, or Ace's (and Whitebeard's) last wishes perhaps. Knowing that he's carrying the dreams of Ace, Whitebeard, and Roger now will probably help him out.
this is pretty much how I feel on the matter of Luffy's recovery. Very much agreed Robby.
He seems already willing to accept Ace's death as truth. Which means he's already come a good way. I was curious what he'd be like after he wakes up, but after reading the chapter… well.. it's pretty much how i'd expect Luffy to act.
Not sure how long the flashback will last... but i'm honestly very interested to see it all.
cause we all know
Flashbacks=dramatic character shaping scenes (the scenes we all love One Piece for and bringers of teary eyed fans)
Man Oda... you're really gonna make me miss Ace huh?
great chapter!
-
I think its a pipe actually, thats brutal.
Still, it gives justice to my username no pun intended…damn Akainu Ace-san is FREAKING awesome!
-
Oda…how do you keep all these story elements cohesive after such a long running series? Maybe you could pass along some of that wisdom to your peers?
-
go = 5, muttsu = 6 (it's a different way of saying "6"), 56 = gomu
Oda is amazing. Thanks for that insight.

Ah yeah. I'd forgotten about those… 2 panels. Darn super condensed flashbacks wedged within the bigger story points!
-
Awesome chapter … so is the coverspread.
I just realized that Luffy was the only strawhat who didn't lost a beloved person (well I knew of course but the suffering part and the coming flashback remind me again xD)
And chibi Ace is friggin badass ... I wonder what Dadan did that he becomes that well educated, polite dude.
Oh and btw - what's that book that this little guy next to Dadan is holding? A dictionary? Maybe he's some kind of teacher ....
-
Hancock was great. SO cute, I just can't believe Oda's just gonna make her wait on the island. You know, the way things are looking, it's like Oda's building up BOTH Jimbei AND Hancock joining. Of course that'll never happen, right?
Luffy…
So tragic 0^0
-
Thanks Mangastream, thanks Urouge :)
-
Good chapter! Luffy first being enraged but then ending up crying out all his pain was much in character. The faces of him crying may appear a bit "comical" for some, but they remind me of an innocent child (which Luffy is at heart), facing something that cannot be changed. Made me feel really sorry for him…And the one little panel of Jimbei, with tears in his eyes, gave him a nice bit of development. Makes him apppear quite warmhearted.
Dadan is a cool cat, her relation to Garp is completely hilarious! Garp is one twisted old bastard, blackmailing a poor bandit!
And I just realized, puberty didn't do Ace any good. He was hundred times more wicked as a kid! Ten year old Ace would spit on Akainu to extinguish the magma and then proceed to kick his ass!
@NANLIT:Luffy's biological mother has to be a bounty hunter now. He's the grandson of a marine, the son of a revolutionary, the foster son of a mountain bandit, the adoptive younder brother of a pirate, and he's a pirate himself. So far he has no relatives that are bounty hunters.
Hahaha seconded! A bounty hunter mom and we would have a completely messed up family for Luffy.
Hahahaha, Luffy the cry baby!
Don't make fun of him… The chapter didn't show it, Luffy was thinking of Moria...!:cwy:
-
Good chapter. Not as awesome as the last one, because we saw too little of the outside world. No named marines, no supernovas, no Moria or big development.
-
Iva did go to Kamabakka kingdom around one week ago (we see the kuja had arrived when Iva went, and that would take around a week). This hurts a little my prediction of Iva meeting Sanji, since I expected Ivankov to go immediatly to Kamabakka.
-
Hancock's love sickness is strong as ever. She's not eating and is breaking the laws of ther people in order to help Luffy.
-
Bepo is awesome. The bear has done almost nothing except wallow in self-pity and kick ass. He (it?) certainly is a lot cooler and more interesting than his captain. I almost wish he was a Strawhat.
-
Law is holding the straw hat and thinking ominously. I wonder what role Law will play in the plot in the comming chapters. I can't picture Oda bringing him along just to make silent cameos;
-
4 pages of Luffy destroying vegetation before anything happened was a bit much, but I guess it shows Luffy's desperation quite well (in a side note, I'd hate to see this chapter in Anima. Luffy screaming all the time with that voice will annoying. Luckly, I don't watch the anime);
-
Jinbei and Luffy bond some more;
-
Flashback! Yay! Flashbacks are a blessing and a curse. They always have amazing storytelling and a compelling story, but usually take a few chapters of buildup before ending with a bang. Just hope this one is not very long. With a break next week, I expect the return to the main story around three or four weeks.

I don't want to start this war again but…..
I doubt Jimbei or Hancock will join, not because they are too powerful or important but mainly because they don't follow the usual path of a new crew member, as in they don't have arcs that may not center around them, but potential new crew members past is explained and they usually play a big role in that storyline
Hancock and Jimbei played pretty big roles roles but with the huge amount of new characters introduced they seem to be a little lost after playing their part
Hancock may take on a Buggy or Alvida-type role and follow Luffy at a distance but not playing a big role in the story and Jimbei will probably stay in Fishman Island because it is open to assault by other pirates and the WG now that WB is dead
-
Seems this flashback will be going on for a few chaps.
Every time Nyon talks it's like Oda is reconfirming Hancock's 0% chance of joining.
Jinbei just seems to just be there. Watching over Luffy, making sure he doesn't kill himself.
Garp using blackmail to have Dadan raise Ace and Luffy. Figures when he says left them with a friend he was using that loosely.
I wonder if it's possible if Garp ever had a marine rival that will actually succeed in raising a great marine. Every time Garp talks about it I think epic failure.
-
Dadan seems 2 me not ganna play a major role in the upcoming story, more like a flashback character
-
ha anyone notice that Brook broke his leg playing
-
- Bepo is awesome. The bear has done almost nothing except wallow in self-pity and kick ass. He (it?) certainly is a lot cooler and more interesting than his captain. I almost wish he was a Strawhat.
I think you can say 'he' since Bepo asks if there are any female bears on the island
- Law is holding the straw hat and thinking ominously. I wonder what role Law will play in the plot in the comming chapters. I can't picture Oda bringing him along just to make silent cameos;
I am wondering myself … on the one hand he has done too much for Luffy for ending up as an enemy but on the other hand Law himself says he is no friend. I want some kind of 'badass rivalry' between those too wihout any serious fights. Kind of the Shanks/Mihawk relation.

every pirate's crew need at least one fishman , tho SH don't have one yet so either Jimbei or they get one once they arrive @ FI
-
Well I guess this chapter was needed but I will comment on few things here:
It seems Dadan is not some "the most powerful person there is" type of person.
In fact if Garp can threaten her like that with Jail and if we add her "punic" title I think it is safe to say, she is a tough woman but no where near top dogs of OP world.
Also it raises a question, how come Garp expects Ace and Luffy to become marines when he entrusts them to that old lady, doesnt really make sense to me.It seems tough we will now be reading flashbacks, which is I think well done by Oda but at the same time frustrating since at the moment so many big questions are popping out:
- SHs
- New World
- How will Luffy get stronger maturer and overcame this loss
- and so on
So I admit this flashback is perfectly done, as Luffy reflects on time he spent with Ace, however it is at the same time frustrating to not move on with the story.
So yeah thats that and now I am going to read your comments, to see what you guys think and if there is something I have missed in the chapter itself.
-
After reading this chap, it's settled, Dadan is Big Mom. No alternative!
-
@AdmiralYonkouMt.Bandit:
Every time Nyon talks it's like Oda is reconfirming Hancock's 0% chance of joining.
To me it reads more like Hancock is putting Luffy above the laws of ther people and will have to make a choice soon.
ha anyone notice that Brook broke his leg playing
I'm not seeing that… I see both of his legs... :wassat:
I think you can say 'he' since Bepo asks if there are any female bears on the island
Thanks. I was not sure if in english you could use "he" for animals.
I am wondering myself … on the one hand he has done too much for Luffy for ending up as an enemy but on the other hand Law himself says he is no friend. I want some kind of 'badass rivalry' between those too wihout any serious fights. Kind of the Shanks/Mihawk relation.
Law's role is a mystery to me. I can theorize about the roles of other characters, but I have no idea at all about what Law will be end up being in the plot.
-
I'm not seeing that… I see both of his legs... :wassat:
look again, look at his face and look at his knee area. his leg was broke trying to block luffy's kick
-
I wonder what Law is thinking about when looking at the Straw Hat.
Anyway, my new guess for SH:s return is Ch. 600. :P

Garp really messed up when it comes to this, but there is still hope for him to train a great marine for the future.

I want to believe…[/hide]
-
I wonder what Law is thinking about when looking at the Straw Hat
I think he was thinking back to the time Law saw Shanks at MF he seemed to be in awe of him and probably is thinking what Luffy could have done to gain the respect of someone so powerful
-
I actaully feel sorry for Luffy, he kept hitting trees and all because he wanted the real world to be a dream. But it wasn't.
-
@Uncle:
I was half-expecting Hancock to walk out and then Luffy punching her in the face.
Oh god, I'm loling so hard at this idea.
-
Such an amazing chapter. Luffy's grief was perfectly done, and with Jimbei watching over him … I couldn't have asked for anything better.
Now it's Flashback time! I'm not expecting any great surprises, just a simple story of brotherly love that will only heighten the tragedy sniff sniff. -
This being Luffy's flashback, as the captain's flashback in the crew, a milestone of sorts, gives me more confidence to think that there won't be no more new crewmates.
-
Hmm, so Luffy is awake now. Considering Luffy said that he would give up adventuring if he knew for a fact that One Piece existed, and it will only be a matter of time till he finds out what Whitebeards last words were, I wonder if that will get played out at all.
-
Oh by the way forgot to ask. How come Jimbei lets Luffy roam around and bashing his head against the treas and alike when pages before we see Law saying that he must not move until healed???
-
This being Luffy's flashback, as the last flashback in the crew, gives me more confidence to think that there won't be no more new crewmates.
That would suck, one of the main reasons I like this story so much is all the new crewmates we are introduced to and their individual storylines, dreams, and personalities
-
So was leaving Luffy in the care of mountain bandits a more direct way to screw his life up than leaving him in the bar would?
I can't see any way Garp thought this through.
-
That would suck, one of the main reasons I like this story so much is all the new crewmates we are introduced to and their individual storylines, dreams, and personalities
Precisely.
And we already have like nine of them. It's already not easy to balance and develop them equally. -
The five stages of grief:
- Denial (thinking it's a dream)
- Anger (Venting frustration at the forest)
- Bargaining (Talking to Jinbei, remembering the past)- Depression (Probably will come out soon)
- Acceptance
Luffy's now in the third stage, but probably acceptance will come only in the end of this arc.

Hopefully acceptance wll come soon, cause Sasuke state isnt needed.
-
In the spoiler, I was a bit confused as to why it said Dadan was "probably" female.
Yeah, I can see why that might be questionable now. o.O
I'm looking forward to the flashback, since it'll finally give Luffy's character a bit more substance. It always felt strange to me that Luffy was the only crew member who hadn't had a flashback at all (other than little snippets here and there), and it feels like giving us more insight into his past and giving him a new reason to fight really cements the idea that Luffy's adventure is "starting over" again.
And damn Miss Goldenweek for making us wait for the next chapter!

His brother just got killed in front of his eyes…
His Brother.
-
but he accepted that Ace is dead, when he realized that he wasn't in a dream.

Well Oda has to stop at some point. The story is about adventuring with friends and growing.
-
no more crewmates?!?!
GOOD.
i'm perfectly content with the crew luffy has assembled now. now we can focus on the hard stuff, instead of character development. (hides before flames) -
@Doggggggiestyle:
but he accepted that Ace is dead, when he realized that he wasn't in a dream.
Acceptance is when you finally get over the grief. It's not just accepting Ace died, but getting on with your life.
In other words: Luffy aknowledged Ace's death. He did not accept it yet. He knows it's truth, but wishes it wasn't.

We need a Carue holyday that eats that holyday.

yeah in that sense I get what you're saying
