I've been playing the tokyo game show demo as soon as it was avalible,
This would be PSP GOTY hands down, especially the multiplayer.
Did I mention you can fire the cannon of the cardboard tank? or the invisiblity laser? perhaps the ninja wall camo thing?

Personally, I am more interested by the storyline. I wonder how it will end.
Snake becomes big boss.

Game of the Year material indeed!

probably could have done without this…

it felt more like I was playing Syphon Filter than MGS. The stealth element seems really stripped down for my tastes
Dammit, this and RDR, I need more money. This is going to be amazing. I was extremely disappointed with PO, so I definitely need this.
Famitsu gave it a perfect. This worries me.

Agreed FF13 did not deserve that 39.
Tidus is 20th on the best video game characters
WTH ! Auron is 34. WTF
Ah found it! This was my impression after playing the japanese demo:
I didn't care for the Peace Walker demo very much. It felt like a stripped down version of MGS3. Stealth seems non-existent and tedious when required. The four player option seems cool… but PSP lacking internet support and only allowing AD HOC and the fact that most of my friends don't really have PSPs throws multiplayer out the window for me at least.
To me, the MGS series has always been a directly linear path. But unlike most linear games, instead of a one lane street to the end, MGS is a four lane highway. It still may lead you in the same direction, but it gives you soo many options for getting to your destination.
Peace walker has amazing graphics for the psp, the fact that Kojima is behind most of it will give it an amazing story, but I can't help but feel that my four lane highway has been condensed to a bumpy dirt road
So I dunno.. the game DOES interest me, what with all the praise it's getting. But I still feel the same. The conversion to the PSP, to me, seems to strip down most of the elements that make me love the series to begin with. Sure, stealth will still be there in some form… but it'll definitely be less refined. And to be honest, I don't feel like playing a shooting only metal gear.
Everytime I read this title I mistake it to be
Metal Gear Solid: Pace Maker…
hopefully this one'll be good. I've been nothing but disappointed with MGS after MGS1
then you'll be continuously disappointed FOREVER
Yeah yeah, Solid had a great story. But it's gameplay is nothing compared to the refined awesome that was MGS:3 (subsistance)

You didn't like ANY of them?

Yeah see, I saw that scene on Magic Box a while ago and it totally reminded me of the first time I took on a tank in MGS. I mean, TOOK ON A TANK and beat it. That same feeling of, "Woah, I'm controlling a guy and he's….semi-realistically doing the incredible."
Yeah yeah, Solid had a great story. But it's gameplay is nothing compared to the refined awesome that was MGS:3 (subsistance)
Quoted for the truth.
MGS3 was one of the greatest first impressions on any series I've ever experienced.

I remember owning the first version of MGS3 with the bad cameras. I actually liked it because it made the game a lot harder.
I managed to figure out how to escape the sorrow on my first try. The irony is that you had all the weapons you needed but your main strenght was your ability to analyse the situation.
I made the Sorrow cry tears of pee on extreme. He was a since. Even with out da googles (they do nothing!… wait.. what?)
That song..Heavens Divide..
Looks like Snake Eater is my second favorite theme song now.

ok i'll admit. It doesn't look bad at all.
my only question is the aiming. Even the guy playing looked to be having a bit of trouble at some point.
but no matter, it looks kinda cool. the smoke grenade and claymore trick was cool as his cover was getting blown to pieces
I'm assuming this is Big Boss we're playing as.
Otherwise, it looks fantastic.

I believe that was Kojima playing. Unless they're trolling with the Hideo as the player name.
This game looks really cool, I especially like the design of the HUD. The controls don't just look like they're ported either, it looks like they were actually designed for the PSP which is how it should be. What they need to do after this is remake the original Metal Gear games, either for the PSP or PS3.
I have the impression that we will not hear the Metal Gear theme again since MGS4. I remember they had legal issues.
First I'd like to point out that even on the back of the game case, it says "Hideo's first Metal Gear Solid for the PSP!", which pretty much points out that Kojima was lying when he said MGS4 would be the last MGS game he'd work on. Well, we knew you were lying then, but this pretty much is solid proof.
Anyways, I'm quite enjoying my time with this game. Capture soldiers is much easier, I don't have to drag them to a truck, I just have to simply equip the Fulton and tap triangle.
Better than trying to drag the soldier and looking like you're dry humping him.
Also, I've noticed that they've put more into the codec conversations than they did in MGS4.
Peace Walker, a PSP game, has more (although not much more, unless you count the recordings) codec conversations than MGS4, a PS3 game.
Now that's saying something
And it feels more like I'm actually building an army. You can actually see the Mother Base (which we all know becomes Outer Heaven) and see it expand as you get more soldiers, and soldiers actually leave if your mess hall isn't doing so well.
There are also some interactive cut scenes, which sometimes I feel aren't really necessary, but still add a small flavor of fun.
I'm also enjoying my time with this one. I know i've said my beef earlier in this thread. But the game really feels right. The mission based story flows quite fine and the narrative and dialogue isn't hampered one bit by the title's formula.
As Mr.Zoro put it, it feels nice building your army and extracting poor saps from the field to be your underlings. Putting them in the right categories, as well as sending them out to fight in conflicts is a nice game within the game.
The comic cutscenes are awesome and just look plain slick.
The controls and combat are a bit of a challenge to get into at first, but after so long, the pace and groove sets in. This game is definitely designed to be played as a metal gear-style stealth game! not a "stripped down title for the psp, turned full action game!"
This control scheme almost forces you to take a more subdued approach to situations (given how the camera and aiming functions aren't the most limber), so you take on challenges at a slower pace. Line up your shots more carefully. Something you'd do when sneaking.
Hideo made quite a few good game design choices for this title. However, one major gripe from me would be the game not pausing when you bring up your inventory to switch weapons. It's frustrating when you die because you're switching to a ration to heal yourself.
And as usual, it pains me when I think of how awesome this would be on PS3.

And boy am I glad he didn't make it an action game. Stealth is how it was, and stealth is always what it should be.
The camera controls took a while for me to get use to as well, even when I had to configure it in the options. It's not so bad now, but it sure has made me take more time into positioning it just right before I go in and do something.
Also, I liked the return of
! The Shagohod!
Well, sorta. They call it a Pupa and gave it a big AI Pod and an electrifying rod and a machine gun or two, but it's pretty much a more aggressive version of the Shagohod.
Fun boss fight, too.
So I love this game.
Anyone else beaten it and listened to all of the briefing files yet?
I haven't listened to them all yet, but I really enjoy listening to what I have so far.
Also, I like the feature of Outer Ops. I somehow find it quite enjoyable, even when you don't really see the action in actual gameplay.
About that two legged thing that looks like a Metal Gear but we don't call it a Metal Gear yet:
! I'm sure this feature couldn't be put in since the game's pretty much packed, but how sweet would it have been to battle other people's custom Metal Gears online?
This game was so good. I only wish that there were human bosses and a more diverse soldiers to recruit.
I recently marathon'd MGS1-4 and naturally can't wait to play this. Kmart is selling it half-off at $19.99, but I'm 100% Ramen-Eating broke. I pray this deal lasts.
Bought it a few weeks ago and still haven't played it.
I would have held off on playing it that way you could have gone Snake Eater, Peace Walker, Twin Snakes, Sons of Libery, then Guns of the Patriots.
Still an amazing game no matter when you play it though.
@Kairouseki:

Do yourself a favor and start.
People insisted I play in release order opposed to chronological order, so I did. Also why would I have played Twin Snakes over MGS1?
My mistake, I always get the names of MGS1 and MGS2 confused because of their special editions.
Woah. this is fun.
I'm fresh off my MGS-thon, but I guess I'm still not burnt out on the series. This is a top priority once I get my PSP next month.
I can't find my PSP charger :cwy: . And I'm too lazy (and cheap) to go buy another one.
Woah. This is really fun.
Hearing all the good press this is getting, sounds like it really should have been Metal Gear Solid 5 like they originally intended.
I have not had that much fun (and trouble) demolishing a tank since MGS1.
Little cheap with the Commandos though. There's no need to respawn them. That was an unnecessary and unfortunate choice best left for an Extra Mission.
just HOW IS THIS GAME SO GOOD!!!???
I am literally scared my friends. I am WAITING for the other shoe to drop!!! This game is actually getting better and more fun as I play! I wince at every corner waiting for the articles of the 'Let's Make 98.9% of Post-2003 Video Games Get Better Before They Get Exponentially Worse' to come into play.
I borrowed my friend's PSPgo and bought this for my upcoming plane ride. I heard the bosses are near-impossible if you don't do it co-op. How true is this?
I had no problems with them.

It's not going to happen. It stays good the entire time.
@The:

they are pretty tough without co-op but i beat most of them so it's not impossible. had to stop playing bc i broke my arm and thanks to the cast i couldn't play.
Dude, first things first.
I played the game for all but four hours of my plane ride back to Japan.
Regarding bosses they can be difficult if you go in with weak weaponry. Just know that you will need to use the extra supply drop 'weapon'. I always avoid those options in games so I was perplexed at first even though Miller was yacking my ear off about it so I couldn't beat the second tank for like 2 hours but once I used Supply Drop it was a cinch.
Although beating the 'parts' of certain bosses to slow down or incapacitate them solo is quite difficult and sometimes not worth it which is a DAMN shame.
ie. I would loved to have taken the first BIG boss out piece by piece crippling it, but it was just easier to fire rockets at its weak point.
ZKaiser, that news makes me so happy.
