What's the best adventure/puzzle solving game you've ever played?
Lucasarts used to make some great brain-storming games: Monkey Island series, Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Sam and Max, The Dig… Sadly, they're just making Star Wars look-a-likes these days.
Other great games are: Broken Sword, Gabriel Knight, The Last Express, Longest Journey, Syberia... It's kinda sad to see today's video games business, and find out that people don't make intelligent games these days, mostly FPS' and MMORPG's.

Castlevania, hands down. With games like Symphony of the Night, Lament of Innocence, Circle of the Moon, and the other GBA releases, how can you not like Castlevania!
-
thye should make some more beat em up games where u can have 4 players running around, but adventure game, i used to love zelda and banjo kazoui, mario used to be awesome too.
theres 1 really hard puzzle game on the net, its called Hapland and theres a Hapland 2, i finihsed hapland 1 in 15mins (its a 1 level puzlle flash), Hapland 2…. i gave up after 1.5hours
-
My all time faves are Sam n Max (best game ever), Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Shadowgate, and Discworld 1 & 2. I also have a soft spot in my heart for the old text based Infocom classics like Zork.
I'm pretty peeved that Lucasarts canceled both Full Throttle 2 and Sam n Max 2. They so very suck.
-
I didn't play much games, so I will go with FFX, FFX-2 and Dark Cloud 2 then.
-
It's kinda insulting to group Castlevania and Final Fantasy with Adventure games like the Longest Journey,Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and FUll Throttle. In fact it's wrong since that's a different genre.
I totally agree man, those games are true gems. it's a real shame they're a minority (probably greatest) in the industry. Really require thinking and immerse you like a good book(moreso than rpg's).
-
well, I mentioned castlevania going by the guidelines that the author of this topic asked for, adventure/puzzle
And castlevania supplies both in good amounts.
However, having not played any of the games mentioned, I of course wouldn't be able to say if that was what the person was looking for.
-
I would have to say Devil May Cry, 1 and 3(2 sucked) for best adeventure game.
-
I'm sorry. I didn't make myself clear in the terms of what an adventure game is. That's not really surprising, adventure games are mostly made for PC's. You'll see them on Playstation, X-Box or Gamecube very rarely, and as I can see, many people on this forum play mostly console games. So roughly, an adventure game is played using only your brain. You lead one character through the environment, you examine things, you talk to people, gather useful information, pick up items… You combine all these aspects, so that you can solve "puzzles". By solving these "puzzles" you advance in game, you go further. There is no action in these kind of games. You don't aim and shoot, gather stats points or use your reflexes, you just use your wits. Most adventure games are based on the "point 'n click" concept. Which means, you scroll with the mouse through the screen and click on places where you want your character to go, or on items you want to examine, or on people you can talk to. These kind of games are Broken Sword, Monkey Island, Longest Journey...There are also first person based adventures like Myst, Zork, Last Express... These kind of games were really popular in the eighties and most of the ninties. Now that the gaming industry has grown very strong, these kind of games mostly remain unwanted 'cause they don't apply to most of the public (customers). People rather prefer games like Doom, Tekken or World of Warcraft these days. If you can buy them somewhere, I suggest you do 'cause they're great and really fun to play.
-
if you want a puzzle game where you examine things, and combine them to get further then i must STRONGLY reccommend "Hapland" and the newly released Hapland 2.
The link to the game is :

Damn, I just keep using the wrong expression. When I say puzzle, I don't mean something like Tetris. I mean something like a problem, a case. For example, how to turn on light in a room when there's no electricity, using only a toothpick, a book and a piece of peanut butter. Or, how to take a guy's toilette brush when he uses it to make kebabs. Or… How to trick someone while conversating with him, using carefully chosen sentences. How to smuggle out a piece of paper without it being noticed. That sort of problems.
-
then in that case, I hate most adventure games I've played =p
Pity, but the concept of using my mind to solve some inane problem for a storyline that chances are, I couldn't care about, doesn't entertain me very much. I'd rather read a book.
-
Yeah I am aware of those games, I dont like them though… lol
-
yeah
which is why so few are released. too few of us enjoy them to get many pumped out. lucasarts have made some freaking hilarious ones though, so if you're into a game that truly makes you laugh, you could try those for starters. The monkey island series, grim fandango, and day of the tentacle would be excellent comical starters. Can get em dirt cheap too. Then move onto the more serious ones.
-
the way yuou say it now sounds like you wanna hear a riddle…
-
I always liked roguelike games. Not much to look at, but very addictive.
Zangband was my favourite on my old laptop.
-
Well I was going to say god of war but… I guess Iv'e never really played games like that and to tell the truth those kind of games sound kind of boring even though I have no right saying that cause I dont think Ive ever played a game like that
-
I wish Tom Clancy did some non-action games for a chance. Some of his books were really good and I can just imagine him doing an Adventure game
Was in Barnes and Noble today and thought that.
Also I saw SYberia in the bargain bin at EB and picked it up. Only $5.99. Hope I get some time to play it sometime. -
Going by what Green Hair said, I've never played an adventure game. I'd like to try one out, but I don't know what to play (new ones anyway).

If you want some recomendations, then read my first post. As for the new ones: Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon, Syberia 2, Runaway, Myst 4: Revelation.
-
Judging from your first post, you're a Tim Shafer fan ^_^ .
I'll check out one of those games if I find one (and isn't very expensive).
-
Heh, Schaffer is the king.
I doubt that anyone will make such a great game as his Grim Fandango.
-
if you want to mention adventure games you can forget greats like Simon the sorcerer 1&2, Flight of the Amazon Queen and Indiana jones and the Fate of Atlantis,Beneath a Steel Sky , Prisoner of Ice, Loom, Phantasmagoria 1&2, and of course 7the Guest and 11th hour if you want crazzy puzzles that require IQ highe than 140 to solve
and the best adventure game i ever played was Sam&Max: Hit the road talkie
adventure games made these days are sadly mostly crap
and many of the old ones can be found on abandonware sites. (just google and you will find lots ) but then again many fans are building their own adventure game using Adventure Game Studio
-
How bout Starfox Adventures? I love this game but it was a bit short but none the less it was brilliant.
I don't think I play many adventure games though except for Legend of Zelda (terrific).
-
I guess I'll go with Monkey Island. Grim Fandango was great but had confusing control moments sometimes and it freezes up on my XP. Full Throttle was also awesome but TOO. DAMN. SHORT. Also Monkey Island 2 was the first Lucas Arts adventure game I played as far as I can remember. And who doesn't love insult swordfighting and Monkey Combat?
Murray rocks BTW.
-
Heh, who doesn't like Murray, the talking skull?

While my favorite games are definately the classic Lucasarts ones:
-Sam and Max is #1 (Conroy Bumpus' song is my favorite comedic
videogame scene, followed by the virtual reality "dragon)
-Monkey Island Series is always good.
-Full Throttle (Maybe they took ol' man Corley out back, and worked
him over with a two-by-four?)
-Day of the Tentacle,
-and the rest!I have a soft spot in my heart for King's Quest 5 and 6, the games
that got me into adventure gaming.Quest for Glory series is good as well.
(Pick up 500 rocks, throw them all at the wall, become #1 throwing skill!) -
A few great adventure games are:
Monkey island games (My name is Guybrush Threepwood, and I want to be a pirate.)
Discworld games (lovely terry pratchett humor)
Zork games (It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.)
Myst games (can't say much about these games)
Leisure Suit Larry series (not including magna cum laude)
Broken sword 1 & 3 (My names George. It means… Well, its just a name.)
Beneath a steel sky (um, a little confusing but good all the same.)
Sam and Max (Should I confront, subdue, and pummel the suspected perpetrator Sam?)
Grim Fandango (I just locked an open door... strange, yet symbolically compelling.)
Gabriel Knight - Sins of the Fathers (an excellent voodoo horror adventure game)
Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis (Well... it's a good game)
Maniac Mansion (made in 1990 and still one of the best)
Loom (Also made 1990 great game, especially the music.)
Day of the tentacle (People who put hamsters in microwaves where I come from get taken away from their parents.. -Laverne):rolleyes:
-
Loom! Mental lapse on my part forgetting about this one,
an amazing game that few people know about. And Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within had to be
one of very very few games to get FMV right.
And, the game amazing as well. -
Has anyone here played Sanitarium? Boy, that was probably one of the sickest games I've ever played. I loved it.
