People usualy like him because he seems to get shit done.
And let's be honest, the marines all acted really dumb when it came to actualy killing Ace if they were so paranoid about his very existence destroying the world and such crap.
About the hate, people may dislike that his character's a bit stock.

Well on first sight he has a pretty overused char but he has something more then the other nes I guess huh?

I'd say 1. Smoker, i think he will turn out to be what Garp was to Roger.

GARP…I mean he luffy granfather he's one of few that could stand up aganists Gol Roger and....he falls asleep randomly....he's pure awesome.

Aokiji, Kizaru, Smoker and Jango. Although, I hope whenever Smoker shows up next, he gets some more character defining moments such as in Alabasta and not just caricature cameos like in the war.

I too think he's becoming what Garp was to Roger and for now he has been a wonderful rival to Luffy. They have a very different personalities, yet they also share something. They have this strange cat and mouse game which isn't just about hating each other. Luffy has straight-out told Smoker he doesn't hate the marine and Smoker, although having a some sort of grudge, isn't totally blinded by his obsession to capture Luffy.
Also, Smoker is one of those marines who isn't mindlessly following their justice but instead does what he thinks is right. He doesn't just obey every command like a loyal dog. He actually sometimes acts downright rebellious if he doesn't agree with those "old geezers" in the government. He obviously has a sense of honor since he returned the favor when Luffy saved his life and he also refused to take credit for something he didn't do a.ka. defeating Crocodile (though in the end the WG didn't care about his opinion). He also didn't chastise Tashigi when she refused to capture the Strawhats even though she had a perfect chance. BTW I think Tashigi makes a great subordinate for him and that interaction is one of the reasons why I like Smoker.I also really like Aokiji, Garp, Kizaru and Akainu. Oh and honorable mention for Bogart (Garp's right hand man) even though his screentime is almost non-existent. The guy just fascinates me. I hope Oda hasn't forgotten him =P. Coby and Helmeppo aren't bad either and I'm interested of their development in the future. Fullbody and Jango instead are awesome pair for the lols.
Also… another honorable mention for the filler marines Jonathan and Drake (from G8 arc). I really liked those guys. Drake was hilarious while Jonathan was very likable with his lax attitude and quick wits. I REALLY hope they would be featured in some upcoming filler again.
Whoa. I kinda like MANY of the marine characters. Though Smoker is my favorite. Aokiji would take the second place I guess but after that I can't really say the order.

He's definitely my favourite filler marine as well(same goes for that whole arc)
Smoker takes the spot for me, mostly because of his relationship with Luffy/the crew, and him being there for Rogers' execution adds to the fact.
Next are Tashigi, and Aokiji.

Indifferent about most of the marines. Favorite (ex/current/fleet) admiral is Aokiji. He's pretty awesome. I think Kizaru is a boring character. Akainu is interesting, but I don't care too much about him.
Favorite overall are Tashigi and Smoker, they work as a pair for me. To a lesser extent, I also like Sentomaru, Hina, Momonga, Strawberry, and Onigumo. The rest idgaf

I am a big fan of Momonga. In his very first appearance he proved himself to be a dedicated, powerful marine. When his crew was turned to stone, you can almost feel the anguish in his voice.

I really don't know why, but T-Bone from Water 7 is one of my favorites and worth to mention
I still vote for Garp! He rivaled with Roger and is still very strong and has a lot of respect. I would love to see a him matching with someone really strong to see what he's still capable of

My favourites are Garp, Sengoku and Ao Kiji. Garp and Sengoku are truly honourable men, that's a great attitude. And Ao Kiji… well if more people would be like him, the world would be a better place, just an awesome guy. Wel but none of them are active marines anymore.
