Anyone have any suggestions for security. My computer started playing up, and showing signs of need of an update.
I'm downloading Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Any other ideas?

Avast AntiVir and Spybot S&D are your friends. Also install Ccleaner to get rid of old registry files and other surplus crap, surf the internet using Firefox with Adblock and NoScript installed and you should be home free.
AVG is doing the trick for me
Avira Antivir.
I use Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Thanks for the various posts.
Seems I've sorted the problems out, for now that is.

i heard a little while ago, that avast was having some major issues. were those resolved?
^ Yeah. They do have some issues. There's a point where it would stop updating and stop finding malware alotogther.
Your best bet it Malwarebytes and Spybot. If your computer is infected by a particular kind of malware, it would try to prevent you from installing Malwarebytes altogether(it must be that good then XD)… so look out for methods to override that if you do.
For real-time security for free... I have Microsoft Security Essentials... It works great, atleast for me. My friend who is a big tech geek installed this stuff for me, so I'm not sure if there are better methods.
If just searching for stuff to delete then I'd go with SuperAntiSpyware. It's saved me a couple of times when I accidentally got some viruses on my parents' laptops. You have to pay for real-time protection though.
Just grab Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, doesn't slow down your computer, and does a good job.
AVG and Avast! will both give you trial versions, and neither of them are particularly good at running in the background. They're easier to deal with than Norton, which will slow your computer to a crawl, but they certainly have a way of making their presence known.
