Chapter 572 "The Times They Are A-Changin'" Discussion
-
-
i think the next chapter is going to be like the chapter where merry is destroyed whit some WB flash back and some crew reactions to his death
-
anyone notice that luffy laughs like the late saul on page 4 http://mangastream.com/read/one_piece/572-37/4
Could this perhaps be the true power of the will of d?

What about Mr 3? :cwy:

Luffy is one of the few characters in the story with multiple laughs, but he was using "shishishi" as a laugh long before Saul entered the story. Besides, Saul's laugh is pretty strictly "dereshishishi" instead.
-
P.S. That 'bear' hammock thing Nami is sitting on his cool.
That bear thing is a sloth I believe.

No. Saul's laugh is "Dereshi." If anything, it's closer to Moria's laugh of "Kishishishi." And Luffy has a tendency to laugh like an enemy he's fought and/or defeated.
-
Luffy's 'shishishi' laugh comes waaay before he fought Moria.

Wow… Marines shouting "ACE is a fire logia... CATCH him".... 2secondss later they shoot both with normal bullets. Hello... It makes jack shit to them.... They have fucking DFs and how dumb can the soldiers be to not know what has been shouted a few seconds ago?
How many hours since luffy joined the battle? And they still don't get that he is made of rubber? How much can the marines fail?
Ok now to the rest of this massive pile of crap. KIzaru the man who just shooted a key now completely disappeared.... Akainu just stands around saying "we won't let them go" while the 2 just pwn every marines in their ways.... "They're strong..... Be careful". WTF? Where are momonga? Where are the VAs who should take care of those 2 pirates? Are they all occupied by the pirates (who are starring in awe at the 2 brothers)?
Or is it party time?
And look at Sengoku.... It takes one chapter for him to recover from jumping away from the plattform. So my conclusion: Oda made the marines look so fucking dumb just to give Ace and luffy screen time.... Now WB blocks the path and it's likely that the rest of the war will involve WB against every marine.
The last chapters showed how strong the marines are compared to the pirates. The 3 admirals are at 100% Garp is at 100% a few are out of the picture.... But in one chapter Oda made the strongest marines stop fighting (Aokiji was used to make Ace look cool...) and send tons of fodder dealing with ace and luffy. How does it work? shaking my head
This chapter is weak. It's crap.

How so? Those ordinary level marines stood no chance against both Luffy and Ace's strength at the same time. The reason the marine's f*cked up in the end was because their brilliant planning was just not as efficient as the pirate's team work. That's all there is to it. Besides, Sengoku's ability to quickly recover is obviously due to his being on equal par with the "legendary's" status. It's not really all that surprising.
-
with this chapter.. i can only wish for a WB POP!!!!
-
Awww… somebody is disappointed for the week...
If you understand what actually happened then i'm happy. I'm just stating the obvious.

How come we only saw one admiral attacking them? And how come it was aokiji? Where is kizaru? Why is akainu standing doing nothing? Why does sengoku take so much time to recover from nothing? How come you see sengokus recovering as quick? he didn't get shot. He just jumped away from the plattform…. That shouldn't be a big issue.
I see most of WBs commander foaming at luffy and ace so they aren't actually occupying the strongest marines. Regarding Akainus and kizarus temper i would have expected them to get serious and just blow the 2 away.... Or i would have expected sengoku to just step in.

Btw is it just me or is Luffy making a moustache with his finger while refering to Whitebeard, that's just epic
-
Hate to say it, but Magnetic Money has a point… The Marines were fucking stupid in this chapter, and a lot of shit didn't make sense. It was all one mindless excuse for a Big Damn Heroes moment. I mean, c'mon; Aokiji goes after Ace?! Not Kizaru or Akainu, but Aokiji?! And why the hell did Sengoku turn his transformation off?! Go into Buddha mode and stop them, dammit!
-
they were recovering from the shock of ace getting free
-
It's not a physical shock. Hell, Kizaru can move at the speed of light, and Akainu can just rain hot death wherever he wants. It's not difficult.
-
That totally makes sense…. The strongest marines are standing there 5 or 10 minutes shaking their heads like "No way... Impossible... How did that happen"... Now compare that shock to the power they actually have over the pirates.
3 Admirals are at 100% of their abilities. The fleet admiral did shit. Garp did shit. Look i understand that he won't attack luffy and ace. But why the fuck doesn't he just attack the rest of WBs commanders?
Why does this whole setup looks like "Wooooot we the marines are actually stronger but heyyyyyy plot time we need to help the poor pirates achieving something"
The way Oda choose to picture the marines here is forced. How can we believe they failed so hard when they owned so badly a few chapter ago and nothing big happened to weaken them?
-
This was probably the biggest "don't worry, the good guys still win" stretch since Luffy's ridiculously miraculous survival of his second fight with Crocodile, or the Straw Hats being bailed out of Enies Lobby by magic, talking, teleporting Going Merry.
-
The Manlybeard is so damn awesome. That maked chapter really good and this war worthy skip to this when reading manga-edition. Manlybeard is the awesome dad, pirate and soon we see his past what is most intresting. One thing he isnt, the "World Strongest Man" never, but one really really tough und double strong pirate. Áll hail Manlybeard, cant give a shit about the smileyboya what they come to get. Go and crush the Marine HQ! Show how old relic leave the stage. Fukken awesome chapter, finally.
Oh and that hand move thing, before hit is… seen no so awesome loong time. Superb, first time after Luffy's famous punch and Amazon Lily, I really enjoy'd chapter. One thing to complain, Marines. They are so stupid and weak. How this did happen? Bad move I say. Oh and also Vivi, loong time no see, fantastic!
-
I'll be happy as long as Teach cuts their retreat. Doesn't seem to feel like it'll happen though.
-
i don't see BB being involved i see next chapter being a emotional farewell and the following chapter being the long awaited strawhat reunion chapter
-
Sengoku took all the blasting when marines wanted to blow the platform but missed.
-
Sengoku took all the blasting when marines wanted to blow the platform but missed.
that is not true.
-
I wonder why the Marines have sea stone cages, sea stone nets, sea stone jutte, but not sea stone bullets.
I imaigne for the same reason why the Buster Call needs a gazzilion ships and cosntant bombardment instead of using a few of the almost mininukes that Crocodile was going to use in Aalabasta. It makes for a more interesting show
As for why the marines are attacking a fire Logia I think you guys seem to forget that Akainu is there. He seems very Stalinesque to me. I wouldn't be surprsied if risking an almost certain death with Ace is beter then risking the absolute certain death of retreating
-
that is not true.
Well it could.

Sengoku already changed to his normal form to avoid the blow, and even says "oh no" when they fire. -

Sengoku already changed to his normal form to avoid the blow, and even says "oh no" when they fire.Do you see him jumping away? Do you see him with bruises in this chapter? It's really simple… He avoided the blast in the last second. Otherwise that would be a severe blow to his legendary status. Trying to justify sengokus inactivity makes him look more stupid.

Yes, I'm not feeling any sort of admiration for WB's or Luffy's accomplishments here because the marines have just been slacking and doing nothing for the last few chapters.
@Captain:This was probably the biggest "don't worry, the good guys still win" stretch since Luffy's ridiculously miraculous survival of his second fight with Crocodile, or the Straw Hats being bailed out of Enies Lobby by magic, talking, teleporting Going Merry.
No Sengoku jumped back when he saw the cannonballs coming and tranformed back to his normal form
for no reason whatsoeverto show off his abbs and afro. -
The time in which these events take place may have a factor in this as well.
To me, it looked like things went by pretty fast, under a minute even.
Point 0: Ace is freed
10-20 seconds in: Normal marines are panicking and kamikazing themselves. Aokiji attempts to step in. Pirates and Marines react to their victory/shame respectively.
About 30 seconds: Squad pulls in the ship.
40-50 seconds: Whitebeard makes his speech and further destroys the island.A really fast chapter imo, plenty of time left for every marine and pirate on standby to get back into the fray. Feel free to disagree.
-
Awesome chapter. Brace for buckets of manly tears next week.
Two things about this chapter:
1. So, it's Mr.3 buried on the ground, upside down, and he's later found by the marines. Are Luffy and Ace just gonna leave him there? I expect a resolution for this next week
2. Didn't Ace Biblecard had 1/10 its original size? How come Ace is kicking ass like nothing happened? I expected him to join the fray, yes, but not at his full powers and vitality…
your #2 was what i was thinking they barley feed there lvl 5 prisoners and beat them so he should be weak i suspect him to drop and one of his crew mates will carry him

The admirals could take care of Ace themselves easily, or Sengoku could go Buddha and squash Ace like a bug under his (haki) shoes. And the VAs could take care of Luffy. But no, all we got was Aokiji doing one attack that Ace can easily counter and they had to send in the morons..

That's 50 seconds in which Sengoku can transform back to Buddha and kick ass, and the admirals and VAs and Kuma can launch an attack.

I can think of several times in history where confusion has thrown everything off. The Battle of Hastings for example had at one point the rumor go through Williams troops that he was dead causing his men to start to fall apart. It took showing himself to them that he was alive to wake them up and get back into shape, a change of plan and pure luck. And we know how this battle went.
Well the Marines had all their best plans laid out, theres panic because none of them have worked. Have you ever tried to walk through the middle of 50 people walking around you in different directions? This is the effect going on, no one longer knows whats going on. Even for the big guys, priorities are in question, do you fight the pirates trying to escape or regroup with your fellow Marines, or wait to see what happens? By now the morale of the Marine force is at the lowest it has been, this is the WORST case scenario for them. Their a unified group, where they take orders from the top. Suddenly, theres no plan for the first time in the battle and everyone is trying to make sense of whats going on. Not to mention several high ups were already taken out prior, and communication between forces is split.
If we put WB in the role of King William, he had his force tricked anyway (Squad) and he had to go into battle to show them the truth. And a change of stragegy paid off for the Pirates. Whereas like the Norman forces, the Marines stuck by their defending the hill plan throughout this and the whole thing collapsed.
Actually, thats a good comparison because like William, WBs paved the way for a new era (William set up the current monarchy in England). The only difference here is WB choose to die and the Marines best are surviving.
-
I was also quite disappointed at the Marines. =/ The Admirals and Sengoku really did not reach my expectations in this chapter or the previous one. You'd expect them to do more in a war against the greatest Pirate crew… Basically the only thing I liked was Whitebeard's lil' speech. ='( Whitey~! Oh, and Marco bitching at that guy to take off his cuffs. :ninja: C'mon Marco~ We like'em on~! -shot-
Ahem. Am I the only one that laughed at Doflamingo? That guy really cracks me up. Crazy bastard!
Random silly prediction: Moria's gonna make Whitey's corpse his puppet. Await for zombie Whitebeard in the future. :ninja:
-
The only thing I hope for is Crocodile to stay in the Marine HQ. If it really happens WB - Croc vs Marines I will be ecstatic !
-
Ahem. Am I the only one that laughed at Doflamingo? That guy really cracks me up. Crazy bastard!
No, I also chuckled at that one. Doflamingo's line was probably the dialogue highlight of the chapter.
-
This was probably the biggest "don't worry, the good guys still win" stretch since Luffy's ridiculously miraculous survival of his second fight with Crocodile, or the Straw Hats being bailed out of Enies Lobby by magic, talking, teleporting Going Merry.
Merry wasn't deus ex. It was built up since Skypiea.
And quit bitching, for all you know only 30 seconds passed between Ace getting freed and the end of the chapter, not a lot of time for ALL the admirals and Sengoku to do stuff.
-
30 seconds in which luffy and ace owned numerous marines in which Squald came with a ship only to be stopped by WB. 30 seconds for WB to drop emotional lines 30 seconds in which the pirates achieved so much and the top marines nothing but just standing around (no i didn't forget aokiji but his attack was useless regarding the fact that he knows who ace is).
And you justify that 30 seconds are not enough to have one panel of Kizaru firing numerous lasers at them or Akainu dropping a lava punch… Doesn't make sense TLC...
This is a war not a pokemon battle!
-
-
People keep bringing this up, why? Do people really think that the crew will disrespect Whitebeard's wishes like that and start going in their own directions? After all this, even without Whitebeard these guys have proven they are comrades, it wouldn't make sense for them to split apart at the loss of their leader.
because it is one of the 2 solutions, they may stay together or get seperated and hide somewhere
wb commanded get out of there and live for new era
without wb the fleet would be open target especially after pacifistas
it is not about betraying the command it is about respecting it -

The entire war was random panels of noteworthy people who aren't shown doing anything for a couple of chapters only for them to pop out of nowhere and do something cool. Why are you bitching about it now?
Also are you actually suggesting that Ao Kiji cower away from Ace?
-
@Thousand:
The entire war was random panels of noteworthy people who aren't shown doing anything for a couple of chapters only for them to pop out of nowhere and do something cool. Why are you bitching about it now?
This chapter is the pinnacle of all that. Now if luffy and ace get away like that it would be so damn lame. Come on kizaru and aokiji were able to take marco and joz down. Why are the Vas showed just standing there? Why is sengoku standing there cursing about failing to kill ace with one blow? Why did this chapter make the marines look like they're shit?
Also are you actually suggesting that Ao Kiji cower away from Ace?
No. But Oda picked Aokiji because it's the only admiral ace would have a chance to block with his fire. Any other would have made luffy at least struggle. While Ace would be able to evade kizarus or akainus attacks luffy would have to run away from huge explosions. That's what i expected.
That bugs me while the other marines are busy either standing there watching the chaos generated by those 2 pirates (akainu, momonga, sengoku etc…) or actually busy being off panel (kizaru). It's not hard to see why we're disaapointed.
This chapter makes it so obvious that the marines have broken powers and that Oda had to come with a reason (choose aokiji attack a fire logia while the 2 others are ignored) to let luffy and ace escape.
-
And you justify that 30 seconds are not enough to have one panel of Kizaru firing numerous lasers at them or Akainu dropping a lava punch… Doesn't make sense TLC...
i have to agree
-
i always love reading poeple getting pissed cause they don't see so and so, like say moria, kizaru, aikanu, ect doing something in the chapter to stop or kill luffy/ace.
um hello, remember luffy is a super weakling compared to a bunch of people in this war. Sure the 3 admirals can rush over and quickly finish off luffy if they put teir mind to it. but we have had commanders stop them a bunch of times, but lets say it was beofre they were protecting luffy.
now you have the 3 admirals all on luffy, and leaving 12 commanders and whitebeard free to do insane damage. sure they may want to take out luffy and ace if they can, but they can't just abandon all else to do it, that would be suicide to the rest of th emarines and HQ's.
WE KNEW Luffy was going to be the one to do something and if you just stop him they win. Imagine in basketball game you had come from future and you knew that some random fan in the stands got to play in the NBA game somehow and he ends up scoring the winning basket. That's what were like. We know the future. Now in that game would the other team send all their players to guard this guy? hell no, they have 4 other REAL NBA PLAYERS to worry about and make sure they dont score. They aren't worried about this small nobody, and even if they came from future as well, then decide to all quickly take him out, that leaves 4 stud players wide open to score.
or football, we all know luffy makes the winning rushing touchdown. Now if other team learns of this through some means before hand they can't risk sending everybody to stop the run, that leaves it open for a audible quick pass. and easy touchdown there.
so yes the admirals and other who you are constnatly bitching are doing nothing could have quickly killed luffy many times before he was being protected completely by commanders. but they can't just leave and let the other WB commanders and Wb himself to run wild for any short time. Their chances of saving Ace are 1000X times higher than Luffy's
-

I don't want to argue with you or something… Everybody has his own point of view, hence grounds to like/dislike smth.
The climax of this chapter was the announcement of WB decision to end his journey on this very battlefield. The reasons for his decision, apart from the obvious "letting his sons escape and live on" thing, will I believe be revealed in the next chapter. I expect ODA to show us a nice flashback explaining WB ambitions, drive, goal, etc. We have seen a lot of action from the old man, but don't really know much about him (as opposed to Roger for example...).
True, the marines have been bitching around this whole chapter. But think about it this way. All along this war was fought at the advantage of the Marines. They had their big numbers, formations, traps, deceptions, Pacifista, Admirals, etc. Yet all this failed in the face of the Strongest pirate in this Worlds and his crew. And a Rookie just to top things. It's normal that their morale is shattered and that they are desperate.
Bottom line: Was this announcement worth a whole chapter... maybe.
Is it an important chapter considering the whole Arc? Hell yes. Oda has indicated so many times that WB fall will trigger a major change in the One Piece world. We have just to sit tight and see what it is. -
The commanders didn't stop aokiji. The commanders where in awe at luffy and ace. WB where busy blocking a ship and making his last comment. This chapter was a "freeze marines… The pirates have to do something".
-
Let's not forget that the marines are also incompetent enough to just let Marco stroll off back to his own forces where someone can take his cuffs off. He was defenseless, why didn't they take him in (or heck, kill him, but we know that will never happen)..
-

I believe this statements really well explains why the at the last minute, the marines were practically doing nothing.
good point Angel.
-
There are a lot of NW captains and commanders the Admirals have to deal with. When Luffy was going to free Ace they expected Sengoku and Garp to stop him, but they failed. Now Ao Kiji attacked them and he failed too…all the marines cannot be bothered with 2 guys only.
-
I believe this statements really well explains why the at the last minute, the marines were practically doing nothing.

Does that explain why Akainu, after he delivered a magma blow to WB, just stepped back and did nothing anymore for a few chapters?

Then why weren't they attacking those NW captains and commanders? They were doing nothing even though they're stronger than pretty much everyone of the pirates.
-
Does that explain why Akainu, after he delivered a magma blow to WB, just stepped back and did nothing anymore for a few chapters?
again, tidious nitpicking….
do you even know what he's been doing?
I don't, you don't anyone can guess it but actually no one knows.
and that goes for the rest of the other bigshots.
-

Thats the whole problem. With Luffy in this war oda have the problem to bring his declaration, -that luffy is practically an ant and not on the required level to do anything noteworthy just yet- and the fact, that luffy is the protagonist in a shounen series together.
So either the admirals, va, shichis, garb, sengoku etc are downgraded strengh-wise, so luffy can somehow pass them or they have to ignore him totally. Oda hase choosen some sort of middle way with the commanders protecting him and some marines/shichis not going all out against luffy (for example kizaru, who didnt aim properly or mihawk).
This was going up to the point where luffy could face all three admirals on a time and two VA thereafter and could somehow survive this.
And right now luffy and ace are the most important things to fight and not some commanders who didnt do something note-worthy the whole arc.
Yes, if all admirals and VA and sengoku would concentrate their power on the two, the marine front would collapse in other places and the pirates could massacre a lot of common marines. But who cares? Killing luffy and ace should be the top priority above all else, except WB of course.
