Dragon Ball Actor Daisuke Gouri Reportedly Passes Away

The Tokyo Shimbun paper reports that Daisuke Gouri, the voice actor best known for playing Robin Mask in the Kinnikuman television anime series as well as Umigame and Mr. Satan in the Dragon Ball franchise, has passed away in Tokyo on Sunday. He was 57. The newspaper reports that Gouri was discovered, with blood dripping from his arm, by a passerby on a street in Nakano ward. Police officers at Nakano station are investigating his death as a possible suicide. According to the authorities, Gouri apparently collapsed face-down onto the street at about 3:00 p.m. The newspaper adds that a knife or similar object was found nearby along with a last will.

I really don't care about most stories like this but this is a shame. Big loss for the world of Japanese animation and what sounds to be a tragic one at that.

What really bothers me is that if he hadn't done this, he would still be alive. Most of the other seiyuu that had involvement with Dragon Ball and died either had some form of lung cancer from years of smoking, old age and so on. But suicide? …It's just...shocking, to say the least. Especially when it involved another major actor. The last time someone involved with the series that had a big role that had passed away was Tenshinhan's seiyuu.

That's just it. Now we'll never hear Gouri attack the Impel Down guards or punch Moria, or tell Luffy not to go back to fight Magellan, and all the other scenes that made Jimbei awesome.:sad:

But then again, his legacy was voice acting so I guess his accomplishments and tragically unfinished prospects should be commiserated according to voice acting as well. Still feel a bit icky with myself.

I can't believe Mr. Gouri is dead… He was one of my most favourite seiyuu, and he voiced many characters that are familiar to me and my sister.

We remember him as Dorry and Rockstar (we haven't heard him as Jimbei yet), Heihachi from Tekken, Dondochakka from Bleach, Hungus from Final Fantasy: Unlimited and Edge Master from the first Soulcalibur game, most of whom are more or less our favourite characters. His voice indeed wasn't only easy to recognize but it's unforgettable as well. It's hard to imagine anyone else taking his roles and pulling them off as great as he did...

If he did kill himself, I wonder why... this is so sad.. Either way, I wish all the best to his family and friends in this time of great sorrow, and that his soul has/will find peace. Me and my sister are very shocked by this..

Its different when it comes to actors, or other storytellers though. Its fine for the first question about them to be "did they finish their final work first?" or with writers "did they leave enough notes for someone else to finish the story they worked on for 20 years?"

When Heath ledger died, one of the first questions that came to most people's minds was "Did he finish all his Joker scenes?"

A creator's final work, especially if they're working up until their death, or they die unusually young, is what they will be remembered by in years to come, and particularly if it was an anticipated role, its okay to wonder "what now?"

Truely a shame… we have lost an unique professional who gave his unique voice to many of our favorite charecters from diffrent series. This just sucks so much, I was so looking forward with him at Jinbei's voice...now it wont be just the same.
