Maison Ikkoku is pretty damn good. It's a very underrated manga and personally I think it's Rumiko Takahashi's best.

I was about to say the exact same thing.

Love Hina is a wackier romantic comedy also. (though the manga is loads better)

I'm just a big softie, but I liked Koukou debut.

Ah, didn't realize you said 'anime'. Well, it hasn't been made into one, but the manga is good.

I haven't seen the anime, but I like the manga Suzuka a lot. Most people hated the ending, but I honestly wished I read more manga that ended like that. The same author has another manga called Kimi no Iru Machi that's also really good.

Nodame Contabile will kick your ass with its sheer awesome. Anime or manga, they're both good.

I WOULD recommend Hana Yori Dango, but the anime just pales in comparison to the manga. Not to mention the horrible artwork.

His and Her Circumstances, though, always a romance classic:

Also not much of an anime watcher, I like mangas better most times.

Sakura Diaries is good, although it can be a little "pornographic" at times. Chobits is a light-hearted one, but it's a good one, too.

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

None are animes that I know, but I love all of Rie Takada's stories. Punch, Gaba Kawa, Wild Act, and, above all, Happy Hustle High.

I've also really liked Money High by Shouko Akira so far.

I haven't read the rest of Suzuka by Kouji Seo, but up to volume 10, I've loved it, even though it was kind of a less goofy, more fanserviced Love Hina. The anime was decent but doesn't finish the whole story.

…I didn't help much on the anime front.

Spice and Wolf is another goodie. Its in a midevil fantasy setting… and its about bartering and economics.

                                      ....

Despite that, its really about the two leads and they're a lot of fun to watch. Short seasons, only 12 episodes (plus bonus 13th ovas)

Both seasons are still on youtube, I believe. (And rumors have been going about of a 3rd season.)

Honey and Clover is quite entertaining. And in the same sense, Higashi no Eden.

Also, I get told Skip Beat is a good romance manga. But I don't know if it has its own anime.

                                          Bet the manga's better.

Considering that it was a ranobe first, and only then become manga and anime, I guess not.

Skip Beat is a FANTASTIC manga. It does have an anime, but while not bad it doesn't quite live up to the original. And it ends just before the really good parts start.

But still, by all means check out Skip Beat.

Midori no Hibi is a sweet "romantic comedy" manga that doesn't have to resort to rape/humiliation tactics so common in many shoujou series. I recommend the manga over anime, but an anime is fine too.

Ouran is good. HanaDan is the original, and its anime has great music (I don't care for the manga art).

Oh, snap! I forgot Midori Days! Good reminder. Manga gives a lot more story, but the anime is fantastic! The hardest I think I've laughed in an anime is when Seiji's friend said Seiji broke his hand when he was facing off with a Yakuza car and took out the car, the driver and the passenger all in one punch! Hilarious.

While I love Nodame Cantabile, I can easily understand why NANA is more popular that it both in Japan and here.

NANA is, at it's core, a soap opera, and those things can just eat you alive. Nodame is more whimsical and niche. But NANA is also one of the better-written human dramas currently in existence, so I think it's popularity is deserving.

In the end I think it's comparing apples and oranges. NANA and Nodame Cantabile are both josei/shoujo stories with music themes, but that's about where the similarities end.

My personal all time favorite romance series is I"s. It does have a six episode OVA based on the manga but the manga goes farther on in the storyline, has more characters, and is just flat out better. That's not to say the anime is terrible, it's just being first exposed to the entire fifteen volume manga, I was a little disappointed with a mere six episodes. The english dub was wonderful though. Mike Mcfarland as Teratani was absolutely brilliant casting. In retrospect, I wish I had watched the anime first and then read the manga. But alas that wasn't an option at the time since I finished the manga long before an english release for the anime was even announced.

tl;dr-I"s is good, manga is better than anime.

Midori no Hibi is a sweet "romantic comedy" manga that doesn't have to resort to rape/humiliation tactics so common in many shoujou series. I recommend the manga over anime, but an anime is fine too.

Ouran is good. HanaDan is the original, and its anime has great music (I don't care for the manga art).

ah,finally someone mentions midori no hibi!i find its a really underrated manga, but for this thread, its really suiting.
its awesome because not only do you get the romance parts (wich are great),and its hilarious!
hilarious as in when seiji & ayase get stuck in that blizzard, ayase's "fantasy technique" on how they can stay warm, and when they finally find a place, its a love hotel!lol they're both kinda panicking

my friend keeps reccomending Ouran.is it really good?

oh!i almost forgot about full moon o shagishite! i really didn't think it would be that good, but really its great.it's got pretty good plot, great romance, and for more sci -fi readers (usually me^^) it has shinigami!really wasn't expecting much, but definitely it returns as a great read

NANA and Nodame Cantabile are both josei/shoujo stories with music themes, but that's about where the similarities end.

i agree with you about everything except the 'better-written human dramas currently in existence'. NANA always strikes me as too cheesy and melodramatic to draw me in. Nodame, while whimsical, quirky and niche, still feels grounded in a bit more reality as far as characters and their development, situations, and all that go. even the romance in nodame strikes me as a bit more 'mature' than the leading romance/s i saw in NANA.

the artwork in NANA, however, is stellar!

Hence why I consider NANA a Soap Opera with a capital S. While the situations themselves aren't particularly realistic, when I said "better written human dramas" I meant in terms of her characters. Ai Yazawa is FANTASTIC at writing characters, in that they feel so very HUMAN. Each character has his/her virtues and flaws, and the decisions they make aren't always logical, but usually emotionally-driven. And it's impossible to truly hate any of her characters, since even the jerks/bitches have some redeeming quality (I'm looking at you, Takumi). So yeah, while the dramas involved are somewhat contrived (although unintended pregnancies happen all the time), the characters feel very very real.

Nodame Cantabile does this very well too, but sometimes I feel they're written TOO weird/quirky.

And yeah, NANAs artwork is fantastic, Nodame's is minimalist.

Yeah, shows like CLANNAD and NANA are filled with really pompous melodrama, it's hard for frank people to take them seriously or believe the emotions are sincere. I for one find people sobbing their brains out more often than not to be a show, rather than true sadness.

One of the former lecturers at my church lost his wife several years ago, and when he came to church he was purely business and acted as if there was nothing bothering him, but he was always just a tad slow on responding to questions or doing things as if something grave was on his mind. That, to me, felt like true melancholy, and it speaks loads more to me than melodrama.

That said, an anime that has "true" emotions in my view and is probably one of the most original, mythic/magical and well written anime of the 2000's is Princess Tutu. It is a romance to the core, but not in the way one would think, and like any legitimate romance there are aspects of tragedy that hound the central relationships. An aura of mystery, like a blanket of fog that looms over a sleepy town at night, that has to be lifted before the true conflict and true relationships can be formed.

It's a two season anime, with the first season having the traditional "happy" end. The second season is far more interesting in my view, "brick shatting" even, people used to compare it to Guitar Ninjas appearing out of some wood and jamming hard on some mean riffs. Completely out of left field, but in a good way.

Highly recommended, it's one of the few anime I've ever rated "Masterpiece". it also has FUDGEAWESOME music, classical stuff from ballets and the like, not trashy J-Pop, alternative rock or whatever kids these days think qualifies music.

                                                                          MUV-LUV ALTERNATIVE
