I have a question..did whitebeard himself open the gates of justice?

The old woman, whatever her name is, says that if the gates are closed, pirates would have to go around the whirlpools and take the longer route. However, it is clearly shown the entire fleet of pirates and WB entered from the front, so he must have known the gate would open. Now unless he had a spy within marine HQ, is it strange to think he punched the gates open? I mean, he was in a coated ship so he should still have his DF powers right?
