Couldn't find a thread about this excellent show so I'll just make one myself!

Welcome to the N.H.K. is an anime and a manga based on a light novel by Tatsuhiko Takimoto. The anime was released in 2006 by Gonzo.

It's about a 22 year old hikikomori who lives in his apartment, receiving money from his parents. He sleeps 16 hours a day and has a neighbour who plays the OP from a bishoujo anime non-stop, which drives him insane. He's paranoid and thinks an organization called Nihon Hikikomori Kyōkai (N.H.K.) is responsible for all of this. One day he decides to get a job in a manga store where he meets a cute girl. The story deals with depression, friendship and addiction (during a 2-episode filler arc) to name a few things. I won't spoil anything else. Go watch it. It's depressing and disturbing at times, but it's worth your time.

      Discuss.

You suuuuuure there's no topic already? I mean I'd be surprised at these fake memories telling me I've talked about this series before.

        Whatever the case.

Satou slept with his senpai! This is apparently canon to EVERYTHING except the manga that I read was a HUGE SHOCK to me. Perhaps if only because the manga's art was the best, not depicting it in the manga was a shame.

Not to mention the whole psychology behind her and driving to that event confuses me, with my simple child-like mentality. I can't understand adults [depicted in media] despite having engaged in a lot of adult things myself. o_O

Well, I searched for a bit and I couldn't find one… If there is one it's probably dead and I'm not sure how you mods feel about bumping threads. So yeah. Sorry if I'm wrong.

I think I liked Yamazaki (the otaku neighbour) the most. Such a likeable guy.

EDIT: I just read the rules. Sorry, I should have searched more.

Doesn't really matter, there's a bunch of dead crusty topics at the bottom of the forum anyway. I mean heck, I found a Bastard!! topic that preceded Aldrich's, now that's some kind of legacy.

            …

Also Satou and Misaki should have banged or kissed or shown some kind of physical development, man their romance was just one major tease and that stuff with Shirou, my gosh it drove me nuts.

Oh, thanks. I'll just be more careful for now and on.

Yeah, the ending disappointed me too. It was okay, I guess. I still think Satou should have signed the contract in episode 23. It would have saved him from a lot of angst.

                i prefer the novel.

misaki's personality seems to be the biggest difference from medium to medium, and i definitely think she's the most likable in the novel. also, all the filler and meandering is cute out–and it's the funniest of the versions, i thought.

There was another topic. I replied like 4 times in it.

Lol, well what to say… this is a good series. Read the novel and manga and watch the anime. Each version has something the others don't.

You can buy it for very cheap off of Amazon, that's where I got mine. It's only like 7 bucks I think, not counting shipping.

most places that carry manga had it when it was released about 2 years ago, but yeah, now online ordering is probably your best bet.

Truthfully, it might be difficult getting it for a good price, since the novel's been out of print for a long time. Since there's no online translation I know if, that might explain the huge numbers the new copies are getting on eBay (~$100).

i have to say i enjoyed the manga a whole lot more than i did the anime. i felt like it tied things up a better, and had more content so it was more satisfying. they also left out a lot of the more taboo topics from anime like satou's little drug problem, which was kind of annoying, lol. if i remember correctly the inanimate objects in his room start talking to him not because he's crazy but because he's high on … something. i feel like the anime makes a lot less sense because satou isn't exactly insane enough to see that kind of shit without being on something. i also feel like his paranoia about NHK doesn't make sense without drugs.

it's funny how japan will have a show like lucky star go on the air, which was basically made for pedophiles by pedophiles, but they just can't have any drugs in nhk, oh noo. because pedophilia is totally better than doing drugs, amirite?

Yeah, but the anime has better stuff as well. For example, the pyramid scheme and the online gaming sagas were done much better in the anime IMO. Like I said, a fan should read/watch all the material in order to get the best of all the franchise has to offer.
