After Story make me almost cried.
ALMOST.
-
If i hadn't watched Clannad before, the picture in the first post would make me stay away from watching it. That fan made picture makes Clannad look like some lame ass loli anime.
It's an epic show, people should try it.
EDIT
Now, this picture is better. -
Ah yes, Clannad. The series that I randomly checked out due to pure curiosity and a lack of anything better to do, and ended up becoming my favourite series of all time. I'll admit that some parts of it are somewhat underwhelming, like Kotomi's arc or the first 8 episodes of After Story, but I can forgive that because everything else is all but perfect. The characters are practically impossible to not like, the music is just beautiful, the animation is some of the best I've seen, and above all else, it has some of the most touching moments I've ever seen in my life. (Actually, scratch that. It features the most touching moment I've ever seen in my life - the end of After Story episode 18.)
Also, Fuko = Most awesome character ever.
-
If you want to get the full story of this you have to play the visual novel. Kotomi's Ryou's and Kyou's story was much more complete there.
Edit: The 6th girl from the reference room was done better in the anime tho.
Oh, there was other endings too, such as Misae the Dormleader and even a Sunohara ending. xD

Can anyone give me a rough summary of the plot without spoiling anything?
-
@Thousand:
Can anyone give me a rough summary of the plot without spoiling anything?
Eh, summarizing the plot without spoiling anything (while still making it sound interesting) is actually kinda hard…
Well, I suppose the simplest way to describe it without giving away any major plot-twists is that it's about a guy who, basically just to have something to do, decides to help this weird girl he met one day reestabilish the school's drama club and help her realize her dreams. But really, you'd be better off just watching the first two or three episodes to see if it's anything you'd be interested in watching, because just describing the initial premise really doesn't describe the story particularly well… -
Worst series I ever had the misfortune of hearing about. An utter disgrace to visual novels.
Kanon and ONE are far superior.

It doesn't have to sound interesting. I leave the story to do that. I've read many manga and books and seen many anime and other shows that have a concept that sounds boring but when you see it being implemented, it becomes awesome and interesting and engaging. A good example is Nodame Cantabile.
-

…Mind sharing WHY it's an "utter disgrace to visual novels"? Because while I haven't exactly played a whole lot of them, the anime-adaption is by far the best visual novel-based anime I've ever seen. (Well, duh.) Other than Kanon, there isn't a single one that even comes close.
-
i was watchin this amv and it seems that tomoya was with tomoyo so some one tell me why he ditched her for freakin nagisa with her antenna hair

…Wait, you didn't know about that? Basically, KyoAni made a DVD-only bonus episode set in an alternate continuity where Tomoya ended up with Tomoyo instead of Nagisa. This was probably done because it's just not possible to faithfully adapt both Tomoyo and Nagisa's paths. There's also one based off Kyou's path, though that one wasn't really all that good.
-
oh so its an off story where can i find it

It's manufactured moe melodrama, which is something I don't like in general. Nothing in the story feels natural or believable, and none of the characters are particularly compelling to sympathize with for most of the series.
After Story is an abomination, but ironically it had the only interesting part of the whole series - when everyone left high school and matured beyond adolescent inanity. It's a very often ignored aspect of life stories - the world does not end with high school graduation!
Kyou was my "least hated" character in Clannad and got promoted up to "most liked" in After Story. That's not to say that anyone else got promoted though.

…Wow. That is literarily the exact opposite of what I think of the series. But I suppose arguing about it is pointless, as it seems you've seen the entire series anyway, so it's not like anything I say will change your mind…

I've seen a lot of anime drama, so I have a pretty solid repertoire of shows to compare Clannad against, and honestly everything up through After Story was nothing spectacular. Far too many of the characters didn't really display any depth beyond their initial personality quirks, like Akio and Sanae, although one could qualify their adoption of Tomoya as development (and I liked that!).
I'd much rather talk about Kanon and how great it is, why can't this be a KEY thread instead of one devoted to my least liked KEY work?
-
Kanon > Clannad (Not counting the After Story)
I wasn't emotionally invested enough in Clannad to continue on. They fronted friendship in lieu of romance. Combined with the antics of the the blonde friend, it was much too light-hearted to really elicit any tears.
Kanon being much more depressing, was twice as poignant. Kanon also actually made use of all the heroines, unlike Clannad.
Air… Maybe it's because I was young, but Air went straight over my head.
I also like how each of the three utilized the ambiance set by different seasons. Air had summer. Clannad had what was it? Spring? Fall? And Kanon had winter.
Yeah, this should just be a Key thread.

Yeah, if one doesn't count After Story, Kanon is (a little) better. Though I can mention some rather major flaws with Kanon's writing as well; The transitions between the arcs feel too abrupt. I mean, really, looking at the start of episode 11, it seems like Yuichi
! almost completely got over Makoto's death overnight. Even for someone who "has hardly anything other than his high spirits", that was still quite a stretch. Also, I thought they stuck a little too close to the source-material, making Yuichi's relationship with all the heroines so close that it was almost hard to take the official couple seriously. Sure, he clearly stated several times that he really did love
! Ayu, but quite frankly, it seemed like he felt the same way about the other 4 as well.
I realize it might sound like I'm bashing Kanon here, but let me just say that, apart from those two issues, I found it practically flawless. I'll also praise it for being consistently excellent, whereas Clannad's quality was a bit uneven; Fuko's arc and the entire After Story (that is, the After Story-ARC, lasting from AS episode 10 to 22) were absolutely amazing, but Kotomi's, Sunohara's and Yukine's… not so much. The reason why I still think Clannad is the better show is because of, well, the After Story-arc. I really haven't seen a single moment in any other series to come anywhere near being as emotional as that one scene with Tomoya and Ushio in episode 18. That, and I think Tomoya is a much more believable character than Yuichi ever was....And yeah, this might as well just be a general Key-thread.
-
@Vegard:
Fuko's arc and the entire After Story (that is, the After Story-ARC, lasting from AS episode 10 to 22) were absolutely amazing,
Wait, what?
KEY melodrama is at its most forced with those very two segments. They should be polarizing at best, but while I've heard mixed reviews of After Story's main course I've never hear someone praise Fuuko's nasty arc.
The only scenes that can compare in terms of cheesy "tension" are Makoto and Ayu's revelation, and Ayu's revelation was much more honest than Fuuko's because what compelled Ayu to remain was love rather than sisterly devotion. Coming back as some astral projection for something as personally trivial as that seems borderline insane/obsessive, and it was hard to sympathize with Fuuko as she was an annoying little midget.
Nagisa After Story…I don't even know where to begin on that! Heck, I don't even want to touch it this early in the morning.
@Vegard:
That, and I think Tomoya is a much more believable character than Yuichi ever was.
I agree and disagree. Tomoya's snappy and impromptu sarcastic dialogue isn't possible for most people, whereas original VN Yuuichi was your generic Japanese adolescent. Yuuichi played by Tomokazu Sugita had a lot of Kyon traits melded into his personality (probably because of same studio, same actor, similar appearance) that are unusual, but not nearly as scripted as Tomoya.
-
…I've never hear someone praise Fuuko's nasty arc.
…Never? Like, not a single time? Funny, considering how to me it's the exact opposite. I've hardly ever seen anyone who didn't praise it. I have seen a lot of people complaining about the end of the series, though, and while I don't mind the way it ended at all, (though I do kind of think they should have just ended it with
! Tomoya coming to terms with Nagisa's death, making up with his father and finally treating Ushio like his own daughter.Actually, when I first saw After Story episode 19, I basically thought that, if it wasn't for the yet-to-be-resolved Illusionary World-plotline, that would have made for a perfect ending) I can at least understand why people would consider the ending a cop-out.
-
@Vegard:

If you haven't noticed, KEY fans tend to not say bad things about KEY. You'll be hard pressed to find a critic in a KEY community because dissenters are very often demonized.
I think KEY can do tragedy, but my problem with them arises when their depiction of it seems deliberate rather than a function of circumstance. Ayu's fate was very circumstantial, driven by the awfully lonely existence she was forced to endure right until her life with Yuuichi and the tree incident. But then they undo all of that tragedy with some wonder magic deux ex.
Fuuko's 'tragedy' was very staged, and anyone who watched Kanon and got to experience Ayu's story (which was considered 'ultimate' and ended up the last story in the series, versus Fuuko's which was just shoved up in the front of Clannad just to get it out of the way) would have automatically recognized the similarity.
Outside of the KEY community, at least from Kanon viewers, Fuuko is the least liked character in Clannad and it is a blessing she goes away for the most part. It's also a stupid arc IMO because it's the most tangential story to the whole of Clannad and doesn't mesh thematically with the other arcs, save Nagisa's After Story end which was ridiculous in and of itself.
What I mean is, Fuuko's arc isn't much more than a side story that has a little bit of relevance to the family theme of the story, but it's not developed enough, is derivative, and poorly done over all.
@Vegard:

The wonder magic world was the worst part, but killing off all the people close to Tomoya for no reason other than to drive toward the need for the wonder magic end was even worse in my view. I agree with your spoiler bit, I didn't mine Nagisa getting stepped on because I hated her anyway, but little Ushio didn't have to suffer so. :[

Kanon = First season of Clannad + snow. Also based on one of Key's visual novels, just like Clannad is. And as far as the Key-series go, I'd say that…
Air < Clannad S1 < Kanon < Clannad After Story. -
@Vegard:
Kanon = First season of Clannad + snow.
Oh man, come on.
-
Oh man, come on.
…What? Are you claiming that Kanon and Clannad aren't just variations of the exact same show? They follow the exact same formula, have the exact same mood, heck, they practically have the exact same characters! They're just mixed around a bit;
Makoto + Ayu = Fuko
Mai - Her badassness = Kotomi
The remaining badassness of Mai + Nayuki = Tomoyo
Shiori = Nagisa
Kitagawa = SunoharaNot that I'm complaining, considering how I think all three of the Key-anime (and Planetarian… and probably Tomoyo After and Little Busters, but seeing how I suck at kanji, I'm not even gonna touch those unless someone makes a translation-patch) are amazing, but when it all comes down to it, they really aren't particularly original.
-
@Vegard:
they really aren't particularly original.
Both Kanon and One are original. They were pioneers of thetragic VN genre.
Air and Clannad followed. Just to get that out there =]
And I've been playing through Kanon… the old art is ugly.

Kanon's major focus was the mystery behind Yuuichi, who had ties to this old town but apparently didn't remember them.
Clannad's forsakes Tomoya's except when it influences his current personality, ignoring any greater mystery in favour of interactions with the characters whereas in Kanon the interactions generally served a purpose to help lead Yuuichi to revelation about his past deeds in Clannad their sole purpose was for the relationship only.
I know the main roles of Kanon and Clannad are similar yes, but they are not the same.

Planetarian is.
Tomoyo After is tragic from what I've head, so I'm guessing it'll follow After Story to some degree.
LB has an anime (?) if I recall correctly, but I'm not touching it right now.
And I've been playing through Kanon… the old art is ugly.
KEY's art is bad in general, even with the hyper-polished Clannad artwork. But yes Kanon and its Jay Leno chins is particularly noteworthy.
ONE is worse, though.
Out of curiosity, you two - are you guys reading TWGOK? If you're not, then you should, it a manga perfect for visual novel buffs.

I am, and that one VN character Keima's obsessed with… just the kind of art I'm talking about. Pretty clever series all in all.
-

No, it doesn't. Trust me, I've been on the lookout for any news regarding any possible adaptation of Little Busters since last summer, so if there was one, I'd know about it.

Oh, I don't know, I'd say their artwork has gotten drastically better after Clannad. Planetarian's art was really good if you ask me, and from what I've seen of Little Busters, that one also seems pretty nice.

Well, seeing how I don't pay much attention to manga in general, I must admit I have no idea what series you're referring to…

It's been a sort of phantom show with me, because I haven't hear major talk about an anime but I saw something like an OVA posting on ANN years ago. It's really weird.
@Vegard:

Planetarian had a different artist, though. There's been one main KEY guy who worked with the company since even before they became KEY (worked on One) and has gotten better, but not in a way I like.
The art is instantly recognizable, though.
@Vegard:
Well, seeing how I don't pay much attention to manga in general, I must admit I have no idea what series you're referring to…
The World God Only Knows. Onemanga it.
Trust me, it's something all visual novel fans should read. That Unrequited is also reading it is diagnostic enough. =3=

Haven't played the game but the anime Clannad and Clannad After Story are both really good. You guys should give it a try.
