It's amazing that One Piece just seems to be getting even more popular in Japan. With the next volume setting the all time record for biggest first print run ever, it seems like the series will just keep going up.

Not meant to sound all know-it-allish, just informing, but Nana usually is one of the top players, if not THE top. Despite its author having cancer or some shit (much to my wife's chagrin as she's a huge Nana fan) it's always been fiercely popular and has easily beaten OP in popular rankings in the past.

A lot of people stay with a series for the long haul, even if it declines in quality.
OP is on a level entirely of its own.
Popularity rarely equals quality. But One Piece is that rare case.

Kind of a pleasant surprise to see Fullmetal Alchemist so high up there. Pretty cool stuff here. Interesting how some volumes do better than others based on content.

Naruto was actually pretty good this past year...the whole Pain Invasion was somewhat more in line with the quality of Part I....so I still like Naruto (even if that means being flamed) even if it's moved pretty far down from the top of my list...Part I, it was great imo, and even still I like the series as a whole, but it has some big flaws.
Bleach, I'm sticking with because I hope it can get back on track after this booooooooooooooooring, ridiculously long string of fights finally ends.

Sooner or later I do believe One Piece will get its day in the sun in America. I here its pretty popular else where as well. Once Naruto and Bleach are done, those guys will be looking for the next best thing. Which according to many of you guys One Piece is the best thing.
I just remember Dragon Ball Z when I was in 6th grade maybe a year or so before Pokemon hit the states. And people knew about it, at least in my neck of the woods, but it was nothing like it is today. I remember after Pokemon, anime really started to become common place. And then I really really started to notice Dragon Ball maybe around high school and such, it only got more popular long after it ended. I imagine One Piece will follow in similar foot steps but before it ends.
The quality of Oda's work and Funimation are just too good to go way unnoticed for so long.
One Piece isn't stereotypically anime enough in it's appearance or characterisation for American audiences. The average anime fans wants something obviously Japanese, with pretty boys that they can "glomp" and fan art of angsty boys with kitty ears (I'm looking at you, Sasuke and Ulquiorra). These are the sorts of people that say "Super kawaii neko-sama!!111" and think they're Japanese. Fans of US cartoons will watch US cartoons and read US comics. One Piece is sort of in the middle.
Similar to how Dragon Quest never really took off in the US. To the Japanese it's this European fantasy setting with one of their favourite artists doing the character designs rather than that "ugly" western art. If we westerners want that sort of thing, we'll play a DnD-based game or Oblivion or something. If we want some JRPG, with the emphasis on "J", we'll play a Tales game or Final Fantasy. Thus DQ is left out in the dark.
