I don't know if a subbed version of this movie is available yet but I just saw it and it was FUCKING GREAT. No one said shit about this film when it was released and it's easily the best movie I've seen this year. Do yourself a favor. Don't watch any trailers. Don't read any reviews. Just see it.
This is what I expected out of 20th Century Boys, BUT NEVER GOT.

From what I hear i'm getting a mixture of surf rock guitar with a blend of The Who, White Stripes and not sure why but Beatles.
Actually…that's a very good observation. In the film they're a punk bank from before punk was popular so it makes sense that it would sound like an amalgamation of what you brought up.

I've looked for it off and on for months on torrents based on recommendations and couldn't get it until I accidentally stumbled into a working one the other day.
WHY IS THIS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND? It should be sold like the crack it is. I'll buy this thing. Full price, day one.
JUST RELEASE IT, SOMEONE. ANYONE.
I think it was about 20 minutes in that I got the feeling I hadn't gotten since, oh, seeing Pulp Fiction for the first time. Where you have NO idea where the story is going or how these unreleated segments work and tie together, but you can tell the craft is so solid that you're assured it will come together and pay off and that every detail is deliberate.
I want the song. Complete with minute of silence.
I'll be watching this again. Very soon.

No. No it is not. not even any ANNOUNCEMENT of an official release stateside.
There's a japanese dvd,naturally, which is region locked, and with no subtitle track.
There is a PBS documentary about fishing with the same name, however.

There is an English subtitled version out on UK Amazon, presumed there was a stateside release. Unfortunate.

FINALLY this movie is getting a stateside release. December 27, so a little late for Christmas stockings, but….
No special features, regular dvd only (no blu) and not even a dub track (which I don't care about) the pre-release price is kind of high (25 bucks for a single disk?) and it looks to be a pretty bare bones release from an indy publisher, but hey, it's finally coming out stateside!
