Finally watched the Owl House episode. That was pretty good but yeah, you can just TELL it was supposed to be five or six different episodes, massively cut down to fit 44 minutes.
Now just another two and then another 4 months for the other ones!
-
I've started watched Gargoyles for the first time.
Just got done with The Gun Episode.Hot take from a guy from a country where this never aired before, but this show is really fucking good. The animation is great and the writing is GREAT. I was expecting that certain things would be censored/toned down due to the Disney of it all, but this show doesn't feel like it pulls its punches - not in a "OMG so DARK" kind of way, but in a "we are taking this seriously, we are not ironically detached" kind of way.
-
This looks like its gonna be fun! I adored the original. Crazy that it took them FIFTEEN YEARS to get to this when it should have happened two or three years later. Oh well. Giselle as the "wicked step mother" is brilliant, and I'm sure Alan Menkin will deliver as always on at least some of the songs, though it may be weird after Galavant poked a fork into his usual song style...

HELL YEAH!

There's a few episodes where the animation dips a notch because they had to use multiple studios, you'll probably notice it in the next episode, Enter MacBeth, that was one of the worst looking in the series, (On initial broadcast anyway. They've cleaned it up some since then.) but generally the animation was very very good. And yes, the writing was always rock solid, especially once they started doing multi-parters in the second season.
It was and still is my favorite animated show, one of my favorite shows period.
Please give a bit of play by play impression-wise as you go through.
Just uhm... stop after you finish season season 2. Goliath Chronicles was done by a completely different staff and its a significant drop in quality.
-
One does not deny the Gargoyles.
-
Here's a teaser for Zootopia +.
Zootopia was my favorite of the newer Disney movies. It looks pretty funny from what little they show.
-
Not really a full blown series, just a few specials. Apparently its going to be six segmentss (length unknown) that all just cover the movie from different perspectives. Each one is going to be a different genre too, like one of them is going to be a musical.
Could be fun, and yeah, Zootopia is one of my three top Disney fliks of this century, (Lilo and Stitch from 2002, and Tangled from 2010 being the other two. Zootopia was 20016... guess I'm about due to land on another favorite? I don't think Strange Worlds or Wish are going to check that box but...)
-
Specials featuring some of the side characters during the same movie is a good idea, I'm especially looking forward to the Arctic Shrew Mafia family.
Strange Worlds doesn't look particularly bad or good. I don't know about Wish yet, but it's supposed to be a combination of CG and WATERCOLOR, so it's definitely got my interest piqued.

I'll try, but I make no promises as to any regularity!
I watched the MacBeth episode too and didn't notice too much disparity besides some slightly goofy expressions, and a weird sequence where a wooden beam in the foreground was greatly obscuring a fight scene, which now in retrospect might have hidden some dodgey animation. Some of my biggest surprises were just how much continuity this show has (while still working beautifully as singular episodes) - if someone is injured in one episode, they have crutches in the next. I was also ready for the "Gargoyles are distrusting of humans" issue to get resolved by the police woman by the end of the 5 part (5 parts! How long is that? Amazing!) intro, but no, it's the whole thematic central conceit of the show, something the Gargoyles are constantly wrestling with!
It's hard to believe this was contemporary with the Aladdin TV series, they feel worlds apart

They've touched it up over the years, the version currently available is a lot better than it was. When they first got the footage in, they had to send it back for "reshoots"... but the show was already airing.
But since it was the follow up to Deadly Force it HAD to air next so they got seven weeks of reruns.
The version that then aired was very... Rescue Rangers esque. Like MacBeth pulls a GIANT remote control out of his coat at one point.
But even my novice untrained eye, with no internet to know the behind the scenes details, noticed it was improved later. I still have a VHS tape with the original airing back home. Haven't watched it in 28 years and its probably garbage quality by now if I even had a VCR to check it on but...
They learned a lesson from then on and they never had direct continuity between two episodes again unless it was a multiparter. Consequences would absolutely keep happening and carrying over, but they tried to keep a few episodes inbetween a specific thing coming up again, and generally used the multiparters as their tentpoles to decide the break points.
They still stuck some in some minor continuity carry over along the way despite the mandate.
Gah,I'm so jealous of the journey ahead of you. I wish I could watch the show for the first time as an adult. Instead of a hundred times as a kid.
-
Somehow missed this. Are Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur actual comic characters?
The intro is kickin' though.

We're selling nostalgia to millennials but we gonna market it to gen z. What could possibly go wrong.

Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur are Kirby creations from the very late 70's or early 80's.
Moon GIRL is a fairly recent development, from maybe 7 or 8 years ago or so when they were trying hard to make Inhumans the new X-Men. Didn't really land with audiences the same way Kamala Ms. marvel or Miles Spiderman did, but that series was a lot of fun. It went for about 50 issues I think.
-
Making the original as "modern" as they did was already very risky (and didn't always work). The only thing that really benefited from that was the music (all hail Allen Menken!)

Good to know. Looking forward to it.
I'm so behind on later Marvel creations.

It has also the best reference that I can think of James Woods.
-
Reference? Or casting?
-
This cracked me up:
Definitely at least watching the Dinner rush and Little Rodentia episodes.
-
-
So, watched Disenchanted. It was.. fine.
Amy Adams was fantastic as always. The songs were mostly good with very over the top productions, which is expected givent he music team but nothing that's going to stick with you. It's always nice to see traditional actual 2D animation, rather than CG faking it.
-
Enchanted itself never did anything for me, so I wasn't interested.
-
I saw Enchanted for the first time a few months ago. It was fine, about what I expected. But considering Disenchanted is getting pretty middling reviews I'll probably skip it.
-
Yeah if you didn't like the first one you really won't care about the second.
-
Strange World is currently sitting at 74%. And considering that Raya, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Frozen 2 all got higher scores, yeah, that doesn't exactly bode well.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/strange_world_2022
Can't say I'm too surprised. The movie looks like it has some neat visuals, but beyond that the story sounds fairly basic (I'm not even totally sure what it's about). And it could just be me, but it feels like Disney has done the bare minimum to market this.
-
The trailers did nothing for me.
-
Anyone want to watch an hour and a half documentary about who wrote the 4 note Disney Channel theme?
This is somehow more compelling and fascinating than any movies they're putting out currently.
I thought for 100% certain this would be background noise that I would turn off after a few minutes. I ended up legit watching partway in.
There's several points along the way where you end up going "...but there's still 40 minutes left in the video, that can't possibly be it."
-
h-how is it a mystery?
-
@puffing-cinema Because the author of the jingle has never been officially documented.
Anyway, despite the less-than-stellar reviews, I went and saw Strange World. And...yeah, can't say there are any real surprises. It's sitting at 73% on RT now and that sounds about right. It's fine. Not great, just fine.
Despite having some fairly creative creatures and scenarios, everything about the movie is pretty basic. Basic story, basic characters, basic dialogue, basic performances. Nothing wrong with that I guess, but this is pretty much a see-it-once kind of movie.
I guess you can give it some credit for having one of the main characters in an unambiguously same-sex relationship, so there's that.
-
Unfortunately for Disney, "basic" doesn't cut it.
-
@puffing-cinema said in Disney animation thread:

Unless a really famous composer did it, little incidental commercial themes are usually uncredited, or part of a production company with five hundred people in it with the company taking credit for everything.
There's a reason the video is an hour and a half, he had to do some legit investigating and goes over why its so hard to figure out.
(Though he did edit the video in a way to draw out the mystery. He probably arrived at the actual answer much earlier in the process given one of the interview subjects is wearing the same outfit at "two different times".)
-
And, unsurprisingly, Strange World is bombing.
-
Iger steps back into Disney CEO seat and Chapek gets the boot, because the dude was pissing off too many people. And not budgeting well.

I did not know that Disney was planning an Indian princess musical (doesn't say animated or live action, probably the latter). But they hired Bend it like Beckham's director, so there's promise:

I saw Strange World today. It suffered from what I like to call Avatar Syndrome, when a movie has impressive visuals and a weak story. It's a shame, because I thought the pulp sci-fi setting was a lot of fun, but I didn't really care about any of the characters.
Disney's sci-fi movies, not counting Lilo & Stitch, haven't exactly been box office hits, as far as animated films go, anyway. But even then, I enjoyed Atlantis despite its flaws and I know it has a bit of a cult following. Treasure Planet is on my long backlog of movies.
They'll probably put more advertising into Wish, which I'm hoping will win me over.
-
Wish is supposed to be a combination of CG and watercolor, which I am very interested to see.
-
Gargoyles issue 1 is out today!
Go to your comic store and support the thing! They have like a gillion covers to choose from!
You can also buy it digitally off Amazon if that's the only option available to you, but their comixology app kind of sucks compared to what it used to be.
I sadly did not work on it at all. But I'm trying! Their current colorist is going to fall behind schedule at some point, and then they'll... probably get someone else in-house to fill the gap. But I can hope!
-
Never stop hoping!
-
The second TOH special is to air January 21th.
-
@Satsuki I have a better shot than most for a variety of reasons.
It's sadly not in the cards for the moment for a different variety of reasons.
Still it would be nice!
-
Is being in Canada one of them?
-
@Satsuki said in Disney animation thread:

Lol no, that has nothing to do with it. Most people work in comics long distance, the days of everyone needing to physically be in the marvel bullpen are long gone.
Mostly its that while I have some ins, I haven't worked at Dynamite in a decade so all the contacts I had there that liked me aren't there anymore, I'm just a rando to the current editors.
-
Went from flop at the box office, to #1 on the streaming. Guess some movies people really would just rather watch at home:

Yeah Disney kind of trained audiences during the pandemic to just wait a month on seeing the animated features. This was the inevitable result.
-
Yeah. Too bad the movie itself is still painfully dull.
-
The second special for season 3 of the Owl House leaked. Reminder the official premiere is Jan 21. Be weary of spoilers if youāre trying to avoid them.

Disney really said "Fuck The Owl House!".
Not that other companies are treating their animated content creators any better. -
