I figured I would create this topic because I am tired of seeing so many people try and create parallels between OP and DBZ. For example I see statements all the time like "I am sure that Luffy will end up with Handcock at the end of the series just like Goku ended up with chi chi in Dragon Ball. Or Buggy is being used by Oda to be this series Hercule in tribute of DBZ and to parallel it…
Yes Oda has stated that he is a fan of DBZ, but why do so many fans jump to the conclusion that he is trying to created certain plot points just to follow Dragon Balls formula? This is Oda's own story I really don't think he is trying to copy anything. Its just that this is a Shonen and some things do repeat in themes simply because of its genre. What do you guys think?
Why do so many fans of OP try and pretend that Oda is copying DBZ?
-
-
I have not heard either of those things :ermm: . OP takes some things from DB like a goofish, naïve main character with an endless stomach and other stereotypes, but so have many other shonen manga because DB sort of set the bar.
-
OP has its own things so I do not think Oda is copying anything. But the world of OP he created is really inspirating just as DBZ do
-
Oda learned from DBZ. Some fans say "no, he didn't", others say "he copied from DBZ". They're two extreme opinions that are bound to exist.
-
Pirates =/= Aliens
-
For those who don't know, Oda and Akira Toriyama are good friends and when Oda was coming up with Romance Dawn, Toriyama was making Dragonball. Oda loved Goku and all the innocent adventures he got into. Now I'm not saying Oda copied Goku but I'm sure DB rubbed off on Oda and influenced One Piece.
No matter what we know one thing for sure: Dragonball isn't One Piece. They are both amazing but each is it's own series.
-
I have an exponentially awesomer question.
Why does it matter?
-
Hmm..If you guys didnt mention this..I dun even noe about this =x i dun see any resemblance of OP n DBZ =.=
-
OP is more imaginative than DBZ IMO, but I didn't see anyone make a comparison here…
-
people only say those things as guesses because they can't come up with a more original outcome probably.
Oda can.
So he will. -
You'd think Oda would incorporate more stuff from Rurouni Kenshin than anything seeing as he was an assistant for Nobuhiro Watsuki.
-
Those fans probably pretend that because Dragon Ball is just that damn awesome.
Honestly though, I've never heard of that claim from One Piece fans. The closest thing I've ever heard to that claim was from Dragon Ball fans (on Daizenshuu EX) who say that One Piece has a very similar feel to Red Ribbon-era Dragon Ball, except swapping out martial artists for pirates. These repeated claims are what got me curious about One Piece. People there claimed multiple times that Naruto and Bleach were nowhere near as similar to Dragon Ball as One Piece was. Being a massive Dragon Ball fan, I just had to see if One Piece was really as good as they said. I'm glad I did.
-
Although One Piece takes a few elements here and there from Dragon Ball(Z), the two series are very different. Such an example is that OP has a more detailed storyline. In DBZ, it was sort of linear. Villains just showed up out of nowhere and after each one. Remember Raditz? And DB was an influence for a lot of series. Whoever thinks Oda is copying doesn't know the facts. But I digress. Both series are very good, though.
-
Oda is kind of copying DB. He worked with Toriyama on a couple projects and really loved goku and the crazy world of DB (Dogs that worked construction and talked, Dinosaurs flying aound, crazy alien emporers, none of that is explained, you just accept and love it.). So, one piece is 98ish percent Oda's own ideas and characters and 2ish percent a tribute to Toriyama.
-
@Kairouseki:

I wouldn't be so sure seeing as how he was only an assistant for Watsuki for four months.
–--On the topic of your life as an assistant, many people mention Nobuhiro Watsuki sensei. After you ended your time at Nobuhiro sensei's, did you go right to work for Watsuki sensei (Rurouni Kenshin, Embalming)?
Yeah pretty much. But I actually wasn't there too long. I think I managed to work full-time every week for only 4 months. After that I wanted to prepare for my own [upcoming] serial work so I worked there every other week.

..the second half nearly ruins it all for me. =\
-
Apparantly… I remember reading somewhere that Oda did state that he was influenced by Dragonball and Akira Toriyama.
However he said something along the lines of...
"when designing OP, i realized that DB had already explored all the themes involving ....(can't remember) so I decided to centre my themes around .... (again)"
Well there you go I guess...
-
I hear a few sound effects from Dragonball Z when watching One Piece, like Kizarus beams, but when it comes to the actual plot, character ideas/designs, and what not, this really has no connection to DBZ whatsoever.
-

You are 100% right. However, you only hear the same sounds because those are Toei`s sounds. Toei animated and owns both series.
-
Oda has not stolen he has learned from what dbz brought and improved upon and has taken the next step of evolution with his serious, unlike other series like naruto and bleach which really ARE just doing dbz all over again instead of really improving upon the concept and taken to the next level.
Let's think about stepping stones of what anime has done, astro boy was one of the first major steps of all anime, the next major step in the world of anime would most likely DB/Z for all of what it brought to the world, of anime, the next has been One Piece which has tooken the ideas from the previous animes before it and tooken it to the next level so yea their might be similar concepts between them, but it doesn't even remotely mean it had anything stolen.
-
Some of you find the whole concept of this ultimate treasure which can only be gathered by traversing the entirety of the world at all similar? Those premises which they start out on are exactly the same. Dragon ball was put together without the preparation it would take to keep a series going forever. Toriyama wished it to end a dozen times over. It's a situation where Oda is standing on the shoulders of a giant.
If you take that core story from the begining of the Dragon Ball comic, give it the maturity the series only found slightly later, and finally equip it with plot that can hold up to indefinite length, you have something a lot closer to One Piece. It's really Oda as a Dragon Ball fan, rectifying the regrets of a lot of Dragon Ball fans.
You can find plenty of other homages to Dragon Ball through character types and common themes, but those aren't too big (and for the record I certainly don't agree with those from the first post). Really Oda pays homage to and borrows from so much it's staggering. From the number of real pirates whose names he borrows to books he constantly references like Treasure Island, Peter Pan, and Gulliver's Travels. He's even started to reference his own works by including mentions of his one shot Monsters and hints about the next film.
Still for all the other works Oda unabashedly shows his love for he's highly imaginative in his own rights, and has through some miracles kept outdoing himself in telling this story and keeping it surprising and refreshing.
-
you could assume that oda is copying stuff from toriyama cause oda is a big fan of him..also DB is THE manga-series all over the world..
so that some think oda is just copying from DB is just cause they want to bitch around…
don`t know any good example where oda should have copyed besides some simularitys in charas..but actually look at some manga series..their will ever be "cliche" charaslike luffy compared to goku...sure they both eat a lot...aren`t the smartest..etc...
but thats just how many shonen charas are...so compare the story and the unique ideas and nothing else... -
Oda IS inspired by Toriyama's work like pretty much every shonen author from the same generation, that's a given.
Very different from "copy" though. -
There are some things that Oda "copies" from DBZ. For example, Gear 2 is Kaioken in almost every aspect.
-

Yeah, except for the fact that Gear Second actually incoprorates science ino its mechanics.
-
I think this is appropriate.
And Super Sayajin also has science. Hair=power, scientific fact. -
Thematically, they are similar. Good, dumb, hungry, friend-loving hero fights for his friends and for the oppressed. However, OP focuses on dreams while DBZ focuses on getting stronger and surpassing yourself. Not to say that that doesn't happen in OP, but… it's kind of taken for graten that the characters power-up off screen?
and that's where the similarities end. I have heard the comparisons, but they are just that. Comparisons. OP is Oda's story, not his version od Toriyama's.
-
If he does, he does a damn good job at it. I really prefer One Piece over DBZ since One Piece reminds me of the more better parts of Dragon Ball you know the one where Launch is not forgotten or when Goku actually lost to King Piccolo and Popo? I know Goku defeated Piccolo Daimao but c'mon it least it wasn't "OMG IT'S FREEZA! NOW IT'S CELL NOW IT'S BUU!" plus the beginning focuses on Goku while Z just jumbles it up with Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks and other saiyans what happened to Goku's fun cool adventures? This is why One Piece is truly something many Original DB fans love. Most naruto fans are "Z" fans since Naruto just takes Z and turns it into an action opera of emo-ness and yaoi…..Did I mention bad orange jumpsuits?

Yeah, they both have basically the same story structure but the execution is different. Most shonen have the same basic structure.
-
One thing that really stands out that people never seem to mention is that Goku is based on the Monkey King, the character from Journey to the West. The TV series named Monkey is also based on the same story. The Monkey King had a trademark weapon; his extending staff. With this staff he could strike out at enemies very far away but letting it magically extend in that direction. Goku also had this weapon, as you'll remember. Now just think about Luffy's name and his ability.
The main way OP is similar to DBZ is in the way that it manages to let humour into a lot of the fights without losing any of the excitement. Even by the end of DBZ, you had silly things like how ridiculous the fusion dance was and how everyone apart from Goku felt embarrassed by doing it. Then of course all the moves that Gotenks uses, and Vegito when he's turned into chocolate, are all very humorous. Naruto and Bleach tend to be deadly serious most of the time and then go "STOP, time for a FUNNY SCENE!" which really clashes, in my opinion. OP and DBZ have an overall very optimistic and fantastical feel whereas Bleach and Naruto have become very juvenile in their attempts to be dark, serious and edgy.
You feel with both OP and DBZ that above all the author is trying to entertain and surprise you. They're not trying to be edgy or dark - they're just telling you a story of a group of characters that often, but not always, involves fighting. Bleach has nothing but fighting; I think it's just been a series of (usually one-on-one) fights for the past few years now with no character moments or anything else. I think a key thing in seeing the similarities between Oda and Toriyama's approach to their creations is the fact that the characters can actually coexist in the same story, like in Cross Epoch. You can imagine Goku and Luffy getting along, seeing who can eat most or something, while Krillin really wouldn't be out of place swabbing the decks with Usopp or Chopper. The very idea of Ichigo or Naruto appearing alongside any One Piece character is just ridiculous - it's as incompatible as having Gandalf in 2 Fast 2 Furious.

I love when clueless mooks pretend to sound like Dragonball fans.
This post is such hilarious and utter faux bullshit. -
Just today someone told me that One Piece copied DBZ because Luffy's rubber stretching ability was a rip-off of the Power Pole.
What they didn't know is that the Power Pole is a rip-off of the Monkey King's staff in Journey to the West.
-
Why did so many people post here?
This thread was obviously created to create negative feelings towards Oda about him "copying" DBZ, although probably every decent user here knows it's bullshit.
Could anyone point me towards a decent thread complaining that Oda copied DBZ?

It's kind of annoying when people split up DB and DBZ. It's all from the manga Dragon Ball. DBZ is just a rebrand for the anime that they brought in after so many episodes. Some people also seem to think that DBZ is from when Goku grows up but he actually became an adult at least an arc before the part of the manga that was used for DBZ. It'd be like if the One Piece anime was renamed to One Piece Z after the Alabasta arc.
@Karate:
Yeah man, let's compare her to some bullshit filler character Toriyama had nothing to do with. Balls on!
Well it makes a lot more sense since (a) she's a snake princess and (b) Goku wasn't interested in her whereas shortly after Goku was Luffy's age, he proposed to Chichi. It doesn't matter that she's a filler character; he was comparing the similarities of the characters, not how canon they are. And I'm pretty sure he meant it in a light-hearted way, simply because they're both known as Hebihime/Snake Princess.
-

You just want this to be true because you're doofus#4564672 who has never read the manga and has only watched the terrible Funi dub.
wahwahwah i dont really know what im talking about but want to talk anyway
Tough luck scrub.

First, Ocean Dub was worse than Funi. But that's argument for another day. Second, this is an anime created character, not an English Dub created one. That means she existed in both the Japanese and the English dub.

Funi was worse. Just because they edited less doesn't make up for the fucking abyssmal voice acting.
You're completely missing what I'm accusing this dude of if you think I'm confused about the filler character, read again, try again, have a nice day.

I get what you are saying. Calm down. I'm just pointing out an additonal fact. But Princess Snake is NOT the best comparison to Hancock; she's not canon but Hancock is.

Fixed for past tense.

I brought up a filler character?! Unforgivable!! ;X
Um….it was suppose to be taken as joke. The fact Princess Snake is non canon was part of the joke. I think it's funny that people compare Hancock to Chi Chi (a canon character) when she has more in common with a filler character like Princess Snake. But in defense of Princess Snake, she wasn't a total bullshit character pulled out of the anime team's ass. Even though Toriyama did not create Princess Snake, she is loyal to the theme of "Journey to the West." "Journey to the West" (Teclo already mentioned this) influenced DB just like DB influenced OP. It's fair to say that JTTW could of influenced OP a little....especially if Amazon Lily is suppose to represent China in a way. Do some JTTW exploring and you'll see understand the dreaded filler character/Hancock comparison a little better. The fact that they both represent snakes is just a bonus ;D
-
The whole idea of "bullshit filler character" and "official character" kind of loses meaning when you realise that the main character of JTTW is Son Goku (in the Japanese form of the name), a monkey who rides a cloud and wields an extending staff. And that almost all the DB characters are similarly based on JTTW characters. See, we're talking about influence here, not originality. Snake Princesses aside, Oda has said that he's influenced by Toriyama, that his favourite manga are "everything Toriyama" and has said many more things to this effect in various interviews. The specifics of Hancock are much more based on Medusa anyway, as should be blatantly obvious (all the more reason that the previous Snake Princess comparison was clearly meant as a joke, though with elements of truth). No one's saying that Toriyama and DBZ are his only influences.
On a sort of related note, Goku and Luffy both conform to the idea of The Fool (as seen in Tarot card but also encountered in some forms in worldwide myths, legends and mysticism). The Fool is portrayed as an idiot but represents infinite potential. It's meant to be empty but therefore infinite. Goku is written as 悟空, in Japanese. The first character means "enlightenment", "perceive" or "understand" and the second means "emptiness", "blank" or "vacuum". Both Luffy and Goku usually seem idiotic and clueless but actually seem to have an insight into peoples' natures way beyond the more seemingly intelligent people around them. I could go on and on about it but you can just check Wikipedia or something if you want to know more. Either way, that basis of Goku and Luffy's characters make them a lot more endearing and timeless than, say, Ichigo and Naruto.

And you do some China exploring. It's hilarious you think that's what makes Amazon Lilly chinese influenced, rather then the architecture.
