I don't know if they're just speculating like us or if they got an official word (did I miss it?), but this site says Zeb's design is inspired by the prototype Chewbacca.

Teaser trailers:
Looks really great. I'm loving the facial animation. Especially where Ezra jumps off the Tie Fighter.

Looks good so far!

And heeeeres Zeb.

Some Rebels toys show off some designs, such as Zeb and some previously previously unknown characters:

As for the episodes that aired last night, here's a summary from Theforce.net:
Pretty great episodes that really started tying things together for Ep.3.
If you have a German IP address you can watch them here:

! I saw some people speculating she's Bo Katan's daughter due to her name being similar to Satine and her helmet and chest plate looking similar to Bo's.! I veyr much doubt she is the daughter of Bo Katan….way too old...and this is taking place in the early days of the rebellion....

2 more Rebels characters.

This show is looking to be really interesting. I'm digging the focus away from "Jedi Jedi Jedi Jedi…" like Clone Wars was.
-
Well, this is post episode III…so Jedi are very scarce.

…yeah. I know.

Season 6 English trailer:
! Yoda vs. Sidious? :O Probably something similar to Luke vs. Vader on Dagobah, but if not, I really need to see that explained.
-
So all 13 episodes are going to be released at the same time on 7th march! next weekend is going to be a blast!
-
Looking forward to tomorrow, I've seen a couple episodes but it'll be great to watch them all at once from front to back. This show looks awesome!
-
I'm majorly bummed out that they never got a chance to animate the finale to the Maul storyline, that is way too good to only get a comic that finishes the story, than it being on screen. Dam them to hell for canceling it when they did.
-
I watched the 4 parter storyline involving Yoda.
! It was really good over all. 1 thing that kinda bothered me. Darth Sidious force choking Count Dooku from another part of the galaxy. On the 1 hand, Count Dooku was among the most powerful Jedi of all time at that point, on par with Yoda & Mace Windu, yet Sidious force chokes him like it was nothing, which is kinda scary, but then again, ihas it ever been stated sum1 powerful could not force choke another powerful force user?
Also, the animation was superb. It really has come a long way since it first aired all those years ago.

I'm still trying to figure out why no one ever just force hurled Grievous into oblivion. Obi-Wan force pushed him once and thats it.

Awww. I saw the Clone Trooper story last nite
! R.I.P Fives. He came so close to heroically exposing the plot of Order 66 but it all fell apart the moment Palpatine faked that assassination attempt. So at least now it has become more clear as to why all the clones carried out Order 66 like they did.
Kinda sucks that Fives had to die as a result of it, but his card was prolly marked from the first episode once he started investigating it. -
I'm just surprised they did such a ballsy move in that last episode.

Kinda sucks that Fives had to die as a result of it, but his card was prolly marked from the first episode once he started investigating it.! Yeah even though the Yoda 4 part was the highlight of this season, I loved the Clone Trooper story more. One of the main reason why I loved The Clone War over Star Wars: Clone Wars is that they had more time to build up characters like Ashoka and all the Clones, especially Fives, Rex, etc. Considering most of the better episodes that involved the Clones were very good to outstanding such as the Umbara arc with Rex questioning when one should disregard orders.
! Considering all the clones gave themselves tattoos and names to make sure they were their own person, the sad part is that Order 66's biggest victim were the Clones themselves. No wonder Fives was terrified when he found out the truth because in the end the Clones were never going to have their own beliefs and ideals but follow one singular order without question, turning the Clones into the droids they were fighting. -
Just finished season 2 and so far I'm loving it!
1st season felt a little childish and was almost entirely single episode stories. It was fun, but I'm glad they ramped things up in the second with bigger story arcs and more meaningful themes. I especially liked the Boba episodes and anything involving Kit Fisto. Ashoka has also grown on me (Lost Lightsaber was a blast), but the Padme/Jar Jar episodes are easily the worst. I'm also surprised at how much I've enjoyed the clone trooper focused episodes. Oh, and I chuckled at that painfully obvious Seven Samurai season 2 episode.
I can't wait for the next seasons, seeing as I've heard the show gets progressively better.

new news about the movie: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=116155
apparently it takes place 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi.
-
"a trio of new young…" sounds a lot like Jacen, Jaina, and Lowbacca. That's definitely not who it will be though, right?
-
I doubt they'll be them, but maybe similar.
That's all kind of old news, though.
-
There was not a word from Disney about what they kept of EU and what they discarded, right? I wonder what they are going to do with Han's and Leya's kids… I'm almost 90% sure they are going to dump Yujan'wong invasion though
-
*Leia *Yuuzhan Vong
They haven't said, we probably won't really know until they start releasing stuff. I doubt they'll just release a whole list of changes and omissions. There is a whole team dedicated to deciding what they're going to keep as canon and what will be discarded.
-

Prolly not. They'll want a trio of brand new heroes i.e the new Luke, Han and Leia of the very first….though I'd love to see those 3 on screen, especially a wookie Jedi - that'd be freaking awesome, only thing better than a wookie with a lightsaber is a Hutt with one, but we aren't gonna see that...( even though it has happened)

“Clone Wars tended to be very somber and dark. This is much happier, pop-ier stuff that still fit in very much with the established language of Star Wars.”
this show now worries me
-
I would think that things post Jedi Purge would be even more somber and dark. Not that I'm looking for "somber and dark" or anything. If I'm being honest with myself, I'm probably just looking for a sequel to The Clone Wars, which is probably setting myself up for disappointment.
-

this show now worries me
Finish the thought
Filoni mentioned that while the show was intended to be less dark than The Clone Wars, he didn’t want to make any absolute statements on where it or the characters could go. He brought up Ahsoka on The Clone Wars being introduced as a plucky young Padawan… who would eventually be shown decapitating four men at once, laughing, “I don’t think you could predict that 14 year old girl would go on to do that!”
-
^I think Rebels will at least start off with a tone similar to Episode IV, which I'm fine with. We may be living in the Dark Times, but that doesn't mean it has to be all dark. I'm sure it'll get the tone right when it needs to.
Anyway,
Chewie Lives!
er… I mean...
... As was already expected, the past Expanded Universe has confirmed to be dead...ish.! > The Legendary Star Wars Expanded Universe Turns a New Page
For over 35 years, the Expanded Universe has enriched the Star Wars experience for fans seeking to continue the adventure beyond what is seen on the screen. When he created Star Wars, George Lucas built a universe that sparked the imagination, and inspired others to create. He opened up that universe to be a creative space for other people to tell their own tales. This became the Expanded Universe, or EU, of comics, novels, videogames, and more.
While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.
Now, with an exciting future filled with new cinematic installments of Star Wars, all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected. Under Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's direction, the company for the first time ever has formed a story group to oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development.
"We have an unprecedented slate of new Star Wars entertainment on the horizon," said Kennedy. "We're set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before."
In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. For example, elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems are story elements in the new animated series, and all these ideas find their origins in roleplaying game material published in the 1980s.
Demand for past tales of the Expanded Universe will keep them in print, presented under the new Legends banner.
On the screen, the first new canon to appear will be Star Wars Rebels. In print, the first new books to come from this creative collaboration include novels from Del Rey Books. First to be announced, John Jackson Miller is writing a novel that precedes the events of Star Wars Rebels and offers insight into a key character's backstory, with input directly from executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman.
And this is just the beginning of a creatively aligned program of Star Wars storytelling created by the collaboration of incredibly talented people united by their love of that galaxy far, far away…. http://starwars.com/news/the-legendary-star-wars-expanded-universe-turns-a-new-page.html
The first books have already been announced:

STAR WARS: LORDS OF THE SITH by Paul S. KempWhen the Emperor and his notorious apprentice, Darth Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely solely on each other, the Force, and their awesome martial skills to prevail. Created in collaboration with the Lucasfilm Story Group. Coming March 2015. Jacket art by Aaron McBride.
! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152379171333713&set=a.414408798712.177165.67519418712&type=1&theater#Covers can be found in their individual links.Apparently, the book "Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir", which is currently being written, will belong to the new canon, too.
All sound fairly interesting, but I'm most looking forward to is Tarkin. Ha. If I had heard myself saying that a few years ago, I'd be shocked. But James Luceno has always been a great author and Darth Plagueis was just fantastic, so another book in that style excites me. Kind of sad that Darth Plagueis (the book) didn't make it into the new canon, though.
While it's nice to get a Luke book that takes place between ANH and ESB, I'm not a huge fan of the first-person perspective. It can be good, but I generally prefer third-person.Here's the press release for the new books:
! > Disney Publishing Worldwide and Random House Announce Relaunch of Star Wars Adult Fiction Line
Following today's announcement of Lucasfilm's new unified storytelling approach, Disney Publishing Worldwide is proud to announce their first step into that larger world, beginning with Del Rey Books. The publishing program will feature new adult fiction novels set in the beloved galaxy far, far away, and will be closely connected to the cinematic entertainment currently in development at Lucasfilm.
Star Wars novels consistently rank on the New York Times Bestseller lists – from the very first tie-in novel, an adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope released by Del Rey in 1976, to the recently published Star Wars: Kenobi -- and dozens of titles in between. With over 75 million copies sold worldwide, these books have captured the imaginations and creativity of authors who have enriched the Star Wars experience for fans around the globe.
Going forward, Lucasfilm has begun mapping out the narrative future of Star Wars storytelling that will appear on film and television and in other media so that all projects will benefit from real-time collaboration and alignment. The future Star Wars novels from Disney Publishing Worldwide and Del Rey Books will now be part of the official Star Wars canon as reflected on upcoming TV and movie screens.
"With the establishment of the Lucasfilm Story Group and our even greater focus on unified storytelling, we expect our entire publishing program to be stronger and more meaningful than ever before," said Jeanne Mosure, senior vice president and group publisher, Disney Publishing Worldwide. "We're extremely excited to kick off this new strategy with Del Rey Books."
The first novel to benefit from this deeper collaboration is Star Wars: A New Dawn, by bestselling author John Jackson Miller. Set prior to the events of the forthcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels, this novel tells the story of how two of the lead characters of the series, Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla, came to cross paths. To tell this important backstory**, Miller benefited from contact with series executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman,** who together ensured this tale will be part of the Star Wars canon of storytelling going forward. It is scheduled for hardcover and eBook release on September 2, 2014.
"We're extremely proud of the hundreds of amazing Star Wars books we've published at Del Rey," said Scott Shannon, SVP, publisher, Del Rey and Digital Content, "And now we're excited to finally be able to call our upcoming novels true canon – a single, cohesive Star Wars storyline -- all while keeping the amazing backlist of Star Wars Legends content in print."
Following Star Wars: A New Dawn, the all-new Star Wars fiction line will continue with the following 2014/2015 titles:
STAR WARS: TARKIN
James Luceno
11/4/14STAR WARS: HEIR TO THE JEDI
Kevin Hearne
January 2015STAR WARS: LORDS OF THE SITH
Paul Kemp
March 2015In years past, the storylines that would appear in print and on screen were developed separately, resulting in an "Expanded Universe" that differed in ways large and small from the filmmaker's "canon." These rich stories provide a treasure trove of characters to fall in love with – and deep worlds to explore and will live on in both physical and digital editions, newly-branded as Star Wars Legends.
For more information and for looks at the covers of all four new titles announced above, please visit the Del Rey Star Wars Books Facebook page at Facebook.com/StarWarsBooks.

Only book there that interests me is A New Dawn. Heir To The Jedi seems a little interesting I guess.
-
Only things of real note from the EU aside from everybody's kids are Thrawn and Mara Jade. Beyond that, whos actually tracked the 35 years of history close enoguh to know all the details of all the novels anyway?
-
@Rob:

raises hand
I started reading that stuff in elementary school, totally out of order. And if I didn't read a book, I read up on the history/plot so I knew what later stories were talking about.
It's kinda sad to see it go, here's hoping the new canon will be as interesting as the old favorites.
ps. Have they mentioned if they are continuing to write more books in the "Legends" canon?
-
I don't see anything, but I assume not.
Also, I made a mistake in my last post. "Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir" isn't a book, it's a comic.
-
I actually did read most-if-not-all of the Original Trilogy-on EU books during high school and still remember large chunks of it (like if you'd tell me "Planet of Twilight" I'd go "oh that's the one with the killer plague roaches and the Hutt Jedi) so I can't say that I really like the idea of just sweeping away twenty-five years of canon just like that, though I guess keeping it as an AU (within an EU!) is okay. That said, the storytelling decisions from Legacy of the Force on really put me off so if that silliness is gone I'm okay with that.
-
What are the odds that this will be like any other reboot, and its just a waiting game until the writers can't help but reintroduce characters and concepts. Like, post-RotJ New!EU book 9 will have a 2 page epilogue, concluding with something like ""The time has come to strike back at the jedi!" the alien said, red eyes gleaming against his blue skin"
-
Well they've said themselves that authors are open to take things from the previous canon and bring them back.
I'm thinking "Tarkin" will bring back Daala as his lover.
-
So it's not a reboot so much as DC's New 52.
-
I hear stuff like KOTOR and TOR and what not are still cannon.
They probably just made this decision to make the movies easier, so removie pretty much everything post episode 6. Hard to make a movie when you have 30 years worth of random cannon to sift through. Doesn't give the script much wiggle room.
-
I do recall them saying that they weren't going to mess with the OR era at all, at least not now. I never really considered that stuff truly canon, anyway.
It's been mentioned that other properties like Star Trek have always had a rich expanded universe that isn't considered canon. I think it's fine that we can allow for a lot of creativity from various sources but not require the head ship to be beholden to all of that.
-

I never cared really about Canon or not. Personally I considered the movies as their own thing. The books as their own thing, all movies ever do for me book wise is give me a picture in my head of what a character looks like or world or weapons, ect. Cinema and books are always separate in my mind. So this never affected me one bit.
I mean its a fictional story. Just read and enjoy it. Now star wars fans are Lucky in a way. They got two worlds they can read, lol. The expanded or whatever they call it now. And then the now "canon" if you care that its considered canon.
BTW recently bought this book for my collection.
!
Never read the star wars movies ever in book format. They any good? new stuff? Better? I read some of the books released like between episode 2 & 3 and read a fair amount of expanded universe books as well. but never an actual book based on a movie. I think the only book i ever read that was based on a movie was something dumb like Operation Dumbo Drop. No idea why, was young. Prbably did a book report on it or something. Could be wrong book i'm thinking of, but it was something like that.I did read like a Jurassic Park book, but wow was that different than the movies. what can I expect in a Star Wars Book?
-
The Episode 3 novel is really great. I like ROTS in general, but the book is a big improvement. It's written by Matthew Stover, who also wrote the Mace Windu Clone Wars novel Shatterpoint and more.

Yeah that ROTS novel went into more details on certain things that the movie didn't like the Mace Windu vs Sidious fight which was way better in the novel, as well as the stuff going on during the Yoda/Sidious battle.

Here's what Timothy Zahn had to say:
Having now had a few days to process the news from LFL, a few thoughts:
First, since many of you are wondering, I have not yet been asked to write any new Star Wars books. But that doesn’t mean I won’t receive such an invitation in the future. If that happens, whether or not I accept will depend on what kind of story I’m asked to write, what input I’d have on the content, what era the story will be set in, etc. I would certainly like to return to the GFFA, but at the moment that’s not my decision to make.
Second, as far as I can tell from the announcement, LFL is not erasing the EU, but simply making it clear that nothing there is official canon. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, nor does it immediately send everything into alternate-universe status. If nothing from the Thrawn Trilogy, say, is used in future movies (and if there’s nothing in the movies that contradicts it), then we can reasonably continue to assume that those events did happen. It looks to me like the “Legends” banner is going to be used mainly to distinguish Story-Group-Approved canon books from those that aren’t officially canon but might still exist.
Third, even if something from the Thrawn Trilogy does show up in a movie in a different form, we authors are masters of spackle, back-fill, and hand-waving. For example, if Ghent appears in the movies but never mentions Thrawn, I can argue that he simply doesn’t want to talk about that era, or else has completely forgotten about it. (Which for Ghent isn’t really much of a stretch.)
Finally, there’s nothing inherently demeaning in the term “Legends.” Think back (a little farther…a little farther) to Disney’s 1950s “Davy Crockett” TV series, (a show I grew up with) which presented stories and legends about the King of the Wild Frontier. Historians have Crockett’s genuine history, but there’s nothing that says these TV adventures didn’t happen, right? So until and unless the legend puts Davy in Tennessee at the same time the real history puts him in Virginia, we can still believe those adventures happened. That’s how I expect it to be with the “real” Star Wars history versus the “legendary” adventures of the EU.
Bottom line: let’s all sit back and relax and see what new adventures are offered to us, both in new books and new movies. It’ll be Star Wars, and that’s what counts. -
As long as we can still pretend that Pixar is adapting Shadows of the Empire, everything will be all right.

I'm excited they're ready to start filming in just a few weeks! Looks like a pretty good cast to me. Moses from Attack the Block and one of the Weasleys not bad.
-
I only recognize Andy Serkis and Max von Sydow.
People are now joking if the presence of Andy Serkis means we will get an Anti-JarJar or a Super-JarJar.

Weasleys? I don't see one.

Domhnall Gleeson was Bill Weasley.
