Anyone else want to watch this movie? It's based on the short movie "Alive in Joburg" which is free to watch on Youtube.

It's about aliens landing on Earth and being unable to leave because their ship is broken and we refuse to help them. They're forced to live in slums and are discriminated against.

      Here's "Alive in Joburg"

        I'll see it, but I don't know.

As of late, I can't stand 'alien' movies.

I never cared for alien movies and haven't seen many. But it's nice to see these reversal movies. Cause they are so damn true. If Aliens really did crash on Earth and just wanted to get home we'd nuke the shit out of them.

We humans are assholes like that.

In fact, I say that's why we haven't had contact with Aliens, because Aliens through various methods have studied us and have basically gone "Good lord, these guys are batshit crazy!" and moved on.

Yep. Thank god E.T. was found by Elliot, an innocent child.

I'm a huge sci-fi geek so I'm definitely going to see this one. Truly great sci-fi movies far and between, really. I'm hoping this would be one.

I've heard a lot of comments on how the CGI is insanely realistic. On IMDB someone was commenting after he saw the movie and compared it to Transformers 2's CGI. His exact words: "When I watched Transformers I was like, nice CGI. When I watched District 9 I was like, where can I get one (referring to the mechs)?". The thing is that the budget for Transformers was around 300 million while District 9's budget is 30 million so it's strange how this movie's CGI was better than Transformers 2 :ermm: .

And yeah, Alive in Joburg was really cool. So if you liked that then this movie should be much better. The opening is shot on a handheld camera to look sort of like a documentary but when things start to happen and the action picks up it switches to a normal camera to keep away from how Cloverfield looked.

This is probably one of the movies that I do want to watch this year…also, all the money of the U.S. Gov (I mean the 6 trillion dollars of deficit) can't even buy one of those spaceships (and by the time we get to build something like that it would cost a million times more then that)

But anyway, I think this would be a great movie (hopefully it would be nominated for a half dozen oscars)

The trailers give me some sort of Half Life 2 feel….maybe it's just me.
Anyways the movie looks pretty neat, definitely something different. Looking forward to it.

You mean that shit was still enforced? I thought kids could just waltz on into an R film alone for the past decade without a second look.

I'm not sure about R rated movies because I've never tried but I know M rated games are heavily enforced. I tried buying MGS from a game store (I don't think it was Gamestop) and he asked if I was 17. A TEN YEAR OLD GAME!

So… did anyone watch the short in my OP or did you avoid it like the plague like everyone seems to do here?

I saw this movie today and it was absolutely amazing. The best movie I've seen all year and possibly one of the best Sci-Fi movie I've ever seen. The CGI for the aliens was fantastic and the mecha suit looked incredibly realistic. The alien weapons were awesome and their effects stunning, such as making people explode.

Throughout the film you grow to sympathize with the aliens as they're treated so horribly by the humans. The ending is left open for a sequel, though I'm not sure if there will be. If there is I hope it's as good as this was. Highly recommended 😁 .

Agreed. I saw it and was very surprised how much i liked it. It was a little slow paced at first but it really picks up and doesn't look back.

! I love the main character's transformation through the film both in body and mind. So many good little laughs and those "OOOHHHHH!!!" moments. I wanted a more complete ending, but i was fine with what was shown. I would recommend this for sure.

funny side note, the guy who was going to do the Halo movie made this. After watching the movie, i thought wow this guy could have done a descent job(i still wouldn't see it though). When people first heard this guy was doing Halo, they hated on him pretty hard, so much so that he's not doing it anymore. He recently stated that even if they asked him to come back, he wouldn't. After seeing that movie, that's a loss on Halo's part.

Yeah, I know he was going to do the Halo movie, but I didn't know he's not anymore. After seeing this movie, I'm sure a lot of Halo fans are hating themselves right now 😆 .

! The war at the end between the aliens and humans was awesome. I especially liked how the mecha wasn't invincible and was eventually destroyed. Him catching the rocket and it blowing off the mecha's arm was really cool. Every time someone exploded from the weapons the people in my theatre cheered, especially when the Nigerian gang leader was blown up and his chucks smeared the camera 😆 .
! I didn't expect the transformation to get so far in the movie either. I was surprised when Wikus looked up near the end and his left eye was changed. I cringed too at when the evil soldier guy shot that one alien since the aliens were so fleshed out. I was also dreading whether he'd kill Christopher (the alien with the kid). I was like "No! No, don't kill him :cwy: !" I was surprised at how human the aliens seemed.

I watch the movie and i got to say this movie is FREAKY AWESOME. This movie totally beat Transformer 2. It was slow in the beginning but it pick up pretty fast. The movies shows how we would do if aliens did land here. Love the part when the main character ran away for MNU, also love the fighting part at the end. Best Sci-fi movie of the summer for me.

Everyone who loves sci-fi should go watch this movie now.

! I liked the concept and I really liked how human they made the aliens. I feel if there were more scenes focused on thinly-veiled, but intruiging social commentary then I would've enjoyed it a lot more. There were a lot of Bleach-esque "hahaha, I've got youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu–" and the person in trouble gets rescued at the exact last minute. The gore and effects were impressive but there was a HECK of a lot of superflous gunfighting - I enjoyed the beginning of the movie the most.
! Also: the main character Vikas or whatever his name was was an unsympathetic douchebag and difficult to like. When he was sitting there setting fire to the alien's eggs, laughing, saying "haha, we're aborting some prawn babies" going "listen to them pop! Like popcorn!" he kinda came off as a monster and the rest of the movie didn't go very far towards making him likeable either. Trying to pull the legal wool over the hero prawn's eyes by evicting him and threatening to take his baby was bad, but being unreasonable about the fluid HE confiscated and the prawns HIS people were experimenting on, then stealing the ship the hero prawn (Christopher Johnson, was it?) took like HE knew how reverse the process or even fly the damn thing, and crashing it like a tard and acting indignant about it just made him such an unsympathetic character that by the end I didn't give a shit about him OR the horse he rode in on.
                                            Could've been better.

! He crashed the ship because one of the wings was blown off. And the way he acted is probably how people would really act. The movie is supposed to sort of mimic Apartheid and I'm sure there were people acting like douchebags during that. The humans don't really think of the prawns as living beings that should be cared about which is how they could let them live in those tiny shacks and experiment on them and stuff. I do agree that by the end of the movie I felt more of a connection with the prawns then with the actual humans.

                                                the movie was great.

                                                a actual GOOD, original IP.

which is saying something, since there are sooo many re-makes, sequals and adaptations in movies nowadays that it makes me want to vomit.

Main character was a wonderful actor and watching the way he changes thoughout the movie kept me consistantly interested. I sympathized for him, critsized him, and cheered for him as well.

The special effects were great for a movie with only a 30 million budget (Transformers 2 was 300 mil). The action kept me entertained as well.

Good pacing, and as Zyordius said, LOTS of "OHHHHH" moments

! people blowing up from crazy ass alien weapons. Very fucking cool!

Great throughout, although I wished the ending was more developed. But then again what we were given was more than enough.

Seriously, this movie was one of the greatest Sci-Fi/Action/Drama epics in a long while. Yeah Star Trek was awesome but it was based off of an IP from the late 1960s. From beginning to end I loved this movie, everything about it felt authentic. The aliens and the humans all felt real and the main characters were perfect. The guy that played the main character was really really good.

! I love how the main character was portrayed as a stereotypical science fiction character in the opening scenes. Loved how no matter how he never really changed his attitude about the "prawns" even with his predicament. At the final moments he finally does change, if only a little. I thought that was brilliant. The alien commander was awesome, pretty much acted as you would think he should. I love how they gave him a son to protect outside of his entire race.

The effects were also expectantly amazing, considering Peter Jackson was involved. The ending was awesome too, let's hope they leave it at that. Must see it again.

Just got back from seeing this, it was an awesome movie. The way they ended it, was good because they can leave it for us to speculate, he lived on as a prawn, until Christopher came back 3 years later. Or, he could have been killed. There is so many possibilities, and there can be a sequel if they choose.

                                                        Awesome.

                                                        My only real complaint is

! The switching back and forth between a documentary and the actual story felt kinda jarring and indistinguishable.
! Like Gekko, I also wish there was a little more to the ending. Anything "three years later" could have really tied up nicely.

I thought it was okay, once he escaped MNU during the experiment it pretty much closes with the documentary style until the very end. It makes sense, because there isn't a camera man with him, but I guess there could have been some confusion, from when they switch to Newscasters and other POV
