Should Devil Fruits be considered a Weapon just like any other or a bad message?

Now, I don't think you're thought that through. Normally, an earthquake can damage one area, maybe a city, I dunno the science. Regardless, world-breaking earthquakes defy logic even with devil fruit power explaining it. Whitebeard's clearly a powerful guy if he's honed his devil fruit power that much.

Hey, Mr. 5 had a bomb fruit and was a weakling. Why couldn't he say, produce a bomb capable of destroying an island? With that in mind, why was Moria able to break an island with the power of just shadows? Shouldn't bombs be stronger then shadows?A rubber fruit sounds lame, but Luffy's done a lot with it. Devil fruits aren't game breaking or unfair. They're basically just a different outlet for power. If you're worried about Whitebeard's strength, then don't, I'm sure he's powerful regardless.

Enel is the only person in One Piece history to get a strong DF and otherwise be a weak fighter. Maybe Foxy too. Ao Kiji couldn't beat the SHs as bad as he did with just ice powers. The fact that he could attack the three stronger SHs at once suggests he has incredible skill and timing. Think about how much of these fighters power come from their fruit compared to their own abilitiy. Did Whitebeard get those scars by letting earthquakes do all the work for him?

I don't want to force my opinions on you, but…well you barely give an explanation for your opinion so I can only assume. Think of a devil fruit as a weapon. Is it unfair for Mihawk to attack an unarmed person with a sword? In real life, attacking anyone with a weapon is unfair, but in this world we accept it.

So it's not surprising that everyone and their mom has one? Really?

I'd assumed that at least the man at the top of the pirate world wouldn't have an ability, because it would really have set him apart and put him on a completely different level. Sure, it's entirely possible for him to be very physically strong while having a devil fruit, and that's been implied anyway, but then why give him one at all?

Oda's a great writer but there's nothing wrong with being disappointed in the decisions he makes once in a while.

And Mr 5 is a great example, he has one great fruit in the world, yet he didn't use it for shit and died.

This can be said for any other fruit, I'm sure that Miss Valentine can progress her fruit to be able to do more, so can Mr 1 (which did a fine job with the spinning blades thing), Mr 3, Magellan (Holy shit, that man is great at progressing it) and of course, Whitebeard.
I think that Devil Fruits aren't: "EAT TO WIN", they are a little edge that you can evolve in something amazing, much like an exaggerated version of the Katanas, sure, they are great weapons that are better than anything else, but it was really needed a great technique to use them well.

Crocodile once said "Any Devil Fruit can be deadly if used correctly." That has been proven by say Cariffa, Kaku and Luffy. So even if you get a strong devil fruit, you won't automatically become strong. That's what caused Perona's downfall.

And also, Whitebeard (since it's because of him this issue was brought up) in his case is clearly strong without his devil fruit, seeing as how he is able to beat up the logia user Ace, in his sleep. Haki. :happy:

I'm a little disappointed, but at the same time I know that Zoro and Sanji probably won't eat fruits, and that as far as we know Shanks hasn't eaten a fruit, and since at the end of the story Zoro and Sanji will be amongst the greatest pirates in the world, I'm not all that broken up about it. I don't think Whitebeard is strong just because of his fruit - obviously when he split the sky with Shanks, he hadn't used his fruit.

The fact that he could do that with just his strength alone, and on TOP of that has eaten the earthquake fruit, and has honed it to perfection just makes his strength all the more worthy of the title "Strongest Man in the World."

I also think of it as a weapon. But saying its rare can still be true. Which I don't get why people complain. We as the readers are being shown a small portion of the population of the world. The population we see are those that fight and adventure the world and the Grand Line. So it makes sense that a lot of people there have Devil Fruits. Either they get them while there, or where called to go after they got their fruits. Its like going to a battle field and being disappointed a lot of people have guns. I mean seriously. Have we really ever seen someone with a devil fruit that wasn't either a pirate, a marine, WG person, or some kind of authority figure. No. I do not recall ever seeing a normal towns person with a DF. If we start seeiing towns of this, then we can say they aren't rare.

I don't know if I appreciate my argument being thrown in here as anti-devil fruit in general. I love the devil fruits and they're part of what make battles in One Piece so unique. I was just disappointed that Whitebeard had one because he was a big opportunity to show that non users could also hang with the heavy hitters. He was a huge, muscular man with a weapon so naturally I expected his title to refer to physical strength. Would it really be so bad to have a few more characters like Garp who are just ridiculously strong beyond reason without a devil fruit?

I think devil fruits can just be seen as weapons to a certain extent, but obviously in scope they tend to offer a much larger benefit than that. It would be pretty stupid to try to argue that devil fruits don't give users a significant advantage over the average fighter, that's been obvious since the very beginning.

That WB had a fruit didnt really dissapoint me, what would dissapoint me for real would be if Mihawk was a fruit user.

Now this is something I'm curious about, would people also embrace characters like Shanks and Mihawk having devil fruits? The way people defend Whitebeard's that's the way it sounds to me. What? To get where they are they obviously have to use fruits to compete with other users. It's not like they still wouldn't have their sword fighting abilities and monstrous strength, they would just have devil fruits in addition to all that. Sound nice?

But, this is only my theory, to be the best Swordsman in the world, you dont really need a DF, you doesnt become a better swordsman only becaus you have a devilfruit. A Devilfruit however does, almost all the time, make you stronger. So I think that is only logical that the worlds strongest man has a Devilfruit. But not as logical that the worlds best Swordsman have one. I might be wrong though… but that's what I think.
About Shanks, he seems have such a negative attityde against Devilfruit. Even though that ofcourse can have changed since back then. I wonder if Shanks knew what kind of fruit he owned before (the one that Luffy took), and decided that he didnt want it... I also wonder if he would say no to a Logia...

If nothing else, he did seem to handle Ace pretty easily without using his fruit powers. That should say a lot about his strength without a fruit. His fruit is beautifully designed, IMO, to provide spice to his character without totally defining it.

He knew what fruit it was. He explained it quickly to Luffy just after he ate it.

I'm glad WB has such an awesome fruit. Who complains about all the powers in the Marvel or DC Universes? Krieg and Oda himself mentioned that the grand line would be crawling with fruit users. And like someone said, the only people who really have them are pirates or marines. Average folks who live ordinary lives so far don't. And when we meet that one average joe who doesn't have one, you can bet Oda will write it so that people will come looking to recruit that person, or that person will gain confidence to go out and do something with that power.

We still have many characters who are strong without the fruit powers, and many more will show up later thats for sure. Be glad that as far as fruit users go in the Straw Hat crew, Brooke's has no use in combat, and that none of the crew with fruit powers can shoot elemental beams(for lack of a better term).

By the time the story is all said and done, Zoro, Sanji, Franky, Brooke, Nami and Usopp will be legendary as far as their abilities are concerned. And I bet not a one of them will have a fruit to aid them in any way. I just hope the Climatact and Kabuto stay devil free.

A lot of people may be disappointed right now that he has a Devil Fruit, and they have their reasons. Why, I recall when Blackbeard was first shown to have a fruit, I was disappointed as well. But remember this: once time has passed and you let it sink in, you'll be grateful Whitebeard got a Devil Fruit. Think about it, how boring would it be if all Teach could do was just punch really hard? Same goes for Whitebeard. By giving him a fruit, Oda is unleashing creativity in creating his power he wouldn't have otherwise been able to if Whitebeard didn't have one.

I consider devil fruits as a weapon. In a fight, pretty much all is fair. the battle could be a man with a sword vs an unarmed man. The fight won't be about the weapon but how well someone has trained. It takes skill to use a devil fruit the right way.
Take Crocodile for example, he had to train with his devil fruit for it to be so powerful. And when he didn't use it he was still able to keep up with Luffy in the fight.

Uh, hey, devil fruits users are still rare. It's just that they all tend to belong to pirates who go to the Grand line. In East Blue, there were three devil fruit users, who are now in the Grand Line. For all purposes of this manga, the Grand Line is the one place where devil fruits users aren't rare.

So yeah, that's pretty much the explanation if you didn't get what the other guy was saying. Kreig explained all this a long time ago.

Also, I'm not sure I want to deal with all this now but I'll try. It's odd getting a quote I made posted in some other guys thread, yeah, especially when for all you know I might not be interested in this argument anymore. But, I kind of am so you lucked out….

To anyone who states that DFs give the user an advantage, they do, but think of this example.

A man eats a lion zoan DF and fights a man. They are both average man with no special abilities, so when they fight naturally the lion man mauls the other. But in a different fight, one man has a lion zoan and the other has a sword. Let's say the other guy knows how to use his sword just as much as the other guys knows his DF. Who wins? I think this fight can go either way....though admittedly I'd side with the lion, both sides have a great chance of brutally maiming the other. The swordsman could stab the lion in the head before getting killed though, it can happen.

The point of all that is, for average guys a DF only does so much. Yeah, a logia might be a great advantage, but when you see guys like Garp and Rayleigh, it's obvious that a normal man would get trounced even with Kizaru's light fruit. If anyone is worried that a normal man can't hang with the big players, first of all, neither of those non-DF users I mentioned are normal men. I take it back, DFs are basically just a weird fighting style that can't possibly happen normally. They compare just fine with an other non-DF fighting styles.

Well, DFs can make you powerful yes, but to be able to use the full effects of the fruit you have to be powerful on your own too. Look at Whitebeard. It's explicitly said that he could destroy the world if he wanted to. Now if say Foxy had gotten that fruit, I'm positive that he would have no such capability because he's nowhere near as strong as Whitebeard is. DFs are only as strong as their users.

I think that df are weapons i mean take luffy as an example in water 7 he pushed two buildings apart without his friut. Therefore luffy is strong with out a fruit but the fruit adds to his stength eg increased range just the same way a sword or a whip would increase his range and by extension his strength.

Anyway, in the beginning Oda's message about DF was that they were mythical and almost never seen. Of course, that was East Blue. Then, Don Krieg said that DF users were all over GL. Apparently, that means DF comes from the Grand Line. That kind of makes sense why they were almost never seen elsewhere. On a tangent, who let Robin eat her DF? I doubt that Robin had DF abilities since age 2 (although that could happen, sort of).

As for Haki, that's something you get after defeating certain death. Since no one is supposed to have their body destroyed and then continue living, moving and thinking rationally, they seem to gain special powers.

Back to subject, DF are cursed powers, not just weapons. It's kind of obvious, but people kind of forget after seeing epic abilities. On land, DF users can be god-like. On the sea, they're walking on a thread, especially in the Grand Line. That's a main difference between One Piece and most Shonen manga.

And who knows what awaits in the depths of the seas? Why are seakings so huge and strong? There may be a more dangerous source of power underwater, and too bad for the DF users who can't access it because they don't swim. But the Fishmen and Merpeople could find it. It may be they just can't use it for some reason.

My arguement was i thought men like WB wouldn't need a devil fruit o reach the top
it also presented an interesting question

if men like mihawk shanks wb without df are at the top then it means theres a balance for non fruit users and humans in terms of power,

I also thought east blue few fruit users but since humans were weak they stood no chance

Grandline was like lots of fruit users but also humans were more and more powerful Sanji and Zoro had to over come some dangerous fruit users to get to a strength where they could match them

So i assumed with that idea shanks mihawk and wb are all human that theres fruit users in the new world but real strength comes from within. Well at least i thought that would be the message we'd be seeing especially with haki's introduction

But this could still be the case aslong as wb doesn't just use his fruit to fight logia types

Also yea i know since df users are happy with the powers they flock to the grand line then they aren't gonna be as rare but it was just expectation and wb would be human

and im just surprised that so many seem to have just accepted it without second thought

It did even look like rayleigh wasn't a fruit user so im sure some of the other higher ups are non fruit users so that df don't seem over powered

Out of the 11 supernovae only 2 maybe 3 had no fruit and 2 of the confirmed were vice captains.
I know in the grandline fruit users have the advantage but again with haki i hope we see more normal humans in strength positions to show that it's possible to reach the top without the fruits or then Zoro and sanji should stop trying and find themselves a fruit to eat

The way he reacted when Luffy ate the rubber fruit and the things he said to Buggy about how he feels about devil fruits make it pretty clear he doesn't have one. I never assumed 'strongest man in the world' meant WB didn't have a fruit, why would I? I never understood why that was evidence for WB not having a fruit.

I don't think that people who are averted to White Beard having a DF despise DFs in general. I also don't like the idea of WB having a DF but like most DFs. Really I think characters like Luffy, BB, and Kuma are great partially because of their DFs.

DFs that enhance or play to the strengths of an individual are what I like best. For example, Luffy's fighting style coupled with Gomu Gomu fruit just makes it better.

However, I guess WB was just different. He was set up as this old school guy who was larger than life. Also, from the way he talks he really loves and respects the sea. Yet he is a DF user which in cuts of your connection to large bodies of water and especially the sea. Being an old school pirate I guess I expected him to value the ability to swim. Also I would expect him to be a walking WMD without a DF. I have always assumed that he was always the #1 when it came to physical strength even if Roger was around in perfect health. He has to be strong since Roger gave him a clean hit and all he got was a surface scar.

All in all it probably won't make much of a difference because I don't see him using it in melee combat since it could cause collateral damage.

Still, I have not decided if the fact that Whitebeard has the quake fruit is a bad thing or a good one.
I, like many others, thought Whitebeard only used strengh with the title "Worlds strongest man" and that the fact that he had a power was a little disapointing.
I wished that beat the snot of of everyone with his mussles and weapon.

On the other side, a fruit that with enought training can destroy the world is nothing to laugh about. And that Whitebeard has it is even cooler.
Sure, a fruit is like any other weapon good but only as good as you are with it. Many of the earlier fruits had the potencial of becoming really dangerus but the user lack control over the power.
In conclution, Whitebeard has a wonderful crescent moon mustache.

I think the reason that Whitebeard has a DF is to match up more evenly in the story against the Marines. The Whitebeard Pirates will be fighting the entire Schibukai , Marines, Admirals, and whoever else decides to show up, and it would probably have been an unconvincing battle if Whitebeard only had haki. I'm sure it's for a reason later on where there will be an opponent that only Whitebeard can fight due to his ability, or his ability will result in everyone escaping safely.

On the note of the overabundance of DF users, I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up, but wasn't OP only supposed to be 5 years long? Perhaps in extending the story line aspects of the Grand Line changed dramatically. I expected in the beginning for Luffy to go to East Blue, North Blue, West Blue, South Blue and then hit the Grand Line last. I think I read on the wiki that he was pressured to have the group enter the Grand Line fairly soon. In re-doing the story it may have ended up with way more DF users than what was intended.

Personally, I'm inclined to think that Zoro and Sanji will both get DF. And the DF's will get stronger and stronger, such as DF's that don't have the drawbacks of normal DF's, such as being able to swim and such, or multi-part DF's which a person has to find and eat all of them to gain the power. Stuff like that is what I think is in the future.

But I get how you guys must feel following OP for so long, I've only got into it in the past two months, so a lot of people must have had certain expectations on Whitebeard since very long ago, and when it wasn't met, people where disappointed. I kinda felt that way when I found out Kaku wasn't joining the SH's. I mean he was in the anime intro and everything, lol.

Excuse me for pointing out rampant idiocy, but how can anyone say that DFs are not rare in OP? There are 100,000 regular marines, give or take a few with DFs, and just a handful of DF users. That plus all the civilians and non combatants in the world that number in the millons.

Exactly. Plus, they are practically all found in the Grand Line. That strip of ocean may go around the world, but that only covers about 10% of the water surface of the planet. And on top of that, there are tens of millions of adventurers in the first half of the Grand Line, and we've only seen about 54 fruit powers. (obviously, don't count anime filler powers)

You're right, many of Luffy's original enemies before he reached the Grand Line didn't have Devils fruit powers and allot of people seem genuinely surprised when someone has a Devils fruit power, even now. The problem some people have is that it seems like the most powerful people in One Piece(who aren't swordsmen) who are coming into play now, seem to all have Devils fruits.

I thought about it and it makes sense that the powerful people in this world are the ones who would have access to something as rare as a devils fruit and it doesn't make it any less rare. Marines have accesses to this power because they essentially control the world and Pirates can get them because finding rare treasure is what they do.
